Chapter 404 – Many Cages
After Cassius and his siblings were gone, Morenna clicked her finger once more, allowing everyone to regain their senses.
But she didn’t give them the time to ponder about what just happened.
"Fast! Fast!" She shouted, her voice cold with authority, "Get out of this room fast and go outside. No one has the right to remain in this room without a Knight Seat." She looked at her grandchildren, "You three, do the same!"
Then she snapped her head towards Esmeray, narrowing her eyes, "And you, my dear daughter. You are coming with me."
"What?! No! I want to—!"
Morenna teleported in front of her, and grabbed her collar as if she were nothing but an annoying cat, "I am not asking your permission, Esmeray."
She disappeared with her daughter immediately after, leaving behind the confused guards and Cassius’s teammates and siblings.
But that confusion didn’t last as the guards urged everyone outside. The room was soon cleared out.
Meadow, at that moment, stared at Cassius wondering how he would achieve his mission with so many guards around.
But then their eyes locked together, and Cassius smiled reassuringly at her. The smile was strange, she mused.
Meadow was used to Cassius smiling.
She knew the subtle beauty that waved out of it every time. And at that instant, there was none of that.
The smile was there, not the thing that made it Cassius’s trademark smile.
She narrowed her eyes, but didn’t think much of it.
’Let’s trust him.’ Meadow thought, ’Cassius always comes up with something. At this point, I can only help him by creating more chaos in this Deathless Prison.’
It was time to show the Kingdom what happened when the youngest Heir of Wealth got into Law affairs.
Meadow took out her phone while sprinting out of the Deathless Prison, zigzagging through the corridors, the smell of stress and tension solidifying the very air around.
She composed the number of her third brother, Clover Wealth, and pushed the call button.
He was the best choice for that situation. Because Clover was the most chaotic and impatient of her siblings.
The man replied immediately, as if he was about to call her himself,
"Meadow! Where are you?!" Clover bellowed out, "Did you see the News?!"
"I didn’t see it, but I heard it. And I am in Deathless Prison." Meadow replied, gritting her teeth, "I have never felt so wronged before, brother. I only wanted to do a mission, and these poor museum bastards dragged me to Deathless Prison for—!"
"I am coming." Clover said, cutting her off, and Meadow could hear him shuffling some things, "I just want to know who in hell dares to be suspicious of a Wealth for stealing artifacts. We could buy their whole fucking Museum if we wanted to. Just wait, Meadow. I am on my way."
Clover hung up without waiting for an answer, just in time for them to reach outside.
"Well, that’s all I can do to help you, Cass." Meadow whispered with a smile, storing back her phone inside.
...
"I don’t know who built this Prison, but fuck his whole ancestral genealogy." Dorian cursed as he and his siblings followed the lead of Mort, traveling through the shadow.
Morgan was leaving wisps of shadows behind in case.
"It was a Desdemona, by the way." Mort replied, amused, "Albert Desdemona, the Mad Creator, to be more precise."
"Should have guessed it." Cassius added, stopping himself from cursing his favorite ancestor, "only he could create something so annoying and call it a masterpiece."
The four were running through the Deathless Prison, making sure to not be seen by the guards still present around it.
They were less numerous, but still enough to cause them trouble.
But Mort knew well enough the inside of the Prison. So he guided them carefully. At the same time, he was trying to know more about his grandchildren in that strange situation.
Never could he have imagined that he would be one day trying to infiltrate this prison, as a shadow, with his grandchildren, and that to kill someone.
The situation was so ridiculous it was funny. Which made it a perfect bonding time.
Even the Desdemona siblings themselves didn’t expect it. But they were not complaining at all. They saw this as an opportunity to be with family.
The only thing that stressed the fuck out of Cassius was the return of Widow. Because of that, he urged the old man to be fast, and soon, they arrived.
The four found themselves in front of a wall like any other wall, the surrounding completely devoid of any guards.
It was dead silent.
"It’s here." Mort said, pointing at the wall, "the only problem is that you either need to be strong enough to destroy the runic formations created to hide the door, or to know how to unlock it."
"Let me guess," Dorian said, "Only a Knight Seat could know how to unlock it?"
"Exactly." Mort nodded.
"Then we are left with the first choice." Morgan said, cracking her head, "an attack strong enough to destroy the runic formations." She looked at her siblings, "I would have proposed a bet to know who will destroy it first but we are short on time. Together, then?"
Cassius and Dorian smiled, "Together."
The siblings attacked in the next second. None of them knew the full extent of the other’s Skills.
And they didn’t need to. They didn’t even try to coordinate.
Morgan was the first one to attack. She used one of her Shadow Summon, the Fox with elemental abilities, and fused with it, making her able to use those same powers with ridiculous efficiency.
Her body shifted, becoming made of pure shadow and elemental abilities. Fox ears and three tails appeared, making her look less human and more monstrous.
The surrounding became laced with power.
She then manipulated black ice, causing creeping black ice to slither at the edge of the walls, a black ice so cold it was frightening.
The manipulation was perfect and seamless, and soon a long black spear bloomed out of it with a hissing sound.
At the same time, Dorian activated his skill. Bloody tears poured down his eyes.
He lifted his hand, putting his fingers together as if he was pinching something invisible, but the fingers didn’t touch. And in that small gap, a horrific coagulation of blood erupted, so red and perfect that a red fog began to blanket out the air around.
After forming the blood, he flicked it towards the wall. A sound like a silenced gunshot echoed, and the needle of blood hissed through the air and pierced the wall.
Cassius was not one to be left behind. While the two attacked, he chose to take the supporting role of this operation.
He used his red destructive plasma, concentrated it so much that it literally became solid and wrapped it around the Black ice spear of his sister, and the blood needle of his brother.
The attack then landed.
The blood needle of Dorian acted first.
As his attack had the inherent ability to transform anything — literally anything, even flesh and artifacts — into blood, the moment it touched the wall, a flaring complex rune erupted.
The blood tried to transmute it into blood, but the rune was far too powerful.
However, the destructive nature of Cassius’s plasma fed the attack of Dorian, which helped it manage to transmute more than half of the runic formation before dying down.
Then Morgan’s spear pierced it, and destroyed the runic formation in a freaking instant. As a result of that, a black door suddenly materialized in front of them, as if it had been there all this time.
The siblings narrowed their eyes, letting their power settle down deep within them, as they noticed that it was locked.
"This is getting annoying." Morgan hissed.
"It’s alright." Cassius said as he stepped forward, "I have a way."
He pulled out the Master Key, the artifact he had obtained a long time ago.
Praying to Lady Luck that whatever he was opening was not some random bloody realm of a hidden sage, Cassius inserted the Key with nerves and twisted it.
A clicking sound reverberated, the door opened. It was still the prison.
Cassius let out a sigh of relief.
But not for long.
"> <Magical foreign Key has been used to open the Prison.>
A voice echoed all around them, then died down almost immediately. But that was enough to set off alarms in the minds of the siblings.
The Guards were coming. Or worse, Widow was coming.
"Shit," Dorian cursed, and the siblings hurried forward, about to step inside the Prison. But before they could enter, Morgan pulled out three masks and robes belonging to the Crimson Daggers, some of them still stained with blood.
Masks and robes she had collected while hunting them.
She forced her siblings to put them on in order to hide their identities, and only then did they enter.
It was dark. Immensely, annoyingly dark.
However, even within that darkness, they could see the prisoners snapping their heads toward them in perfect unison, countless bloodshot and malicious eyes locking onto the three siblings.
All of them were sealed inside cages like animals. Some cages held only one person, while others held numerous prisoners crammed together.
The cages lined both the left and right sides of the Prison, with those inside handcuffed by artifacts that sealed their Essence and restricted every other kind of Power they possessed.
Yet despite all of that, the tension was harrowing, pressing down on the siblings from every direction.
But that was not something the Desdemona siblings were concerned about.
They were not here to be intimidated. And no caged animal could intimidate them.
So,
"Let’s do this fast, ladies and gentlemen," Dorian said, clapping his hands together in a theatrical fashion, his voice altered beneath the mask. "Our little youngest wants the head of one of you."
"The wisest choice would be not to make this difficult for him, and therefore for us," Morgan added, leaning against the wall and accidentally catching her robe on a sharp edge, ripping it without even noticing. "We are on edge today, and we don’t handle stress particularly well."
"That’s why," Cassius added, slowly looking from cage to cage, "I’m going to ask only once."
The prisoners stared back at him.
"Does any of you know a man called Menteur?"
