Chapter 477 – Official New Members

Diaila didn’t even know what to think at that point, her mind struggling to comprehend everything that had just happened.

Fast. This masked worm woman hadn’t even allowed her the time to think properly.

The answer to who led the Fallen Sect was still echoing deep inside her mind, and the fact that the first person she pictured as that angel was Cassius Desdemona made her wonder if she was going crazy.

Cassius Desdemona, the Angel of the Land of Death.

That was one of the many titles the Kingdom knew him by. But surely, that same angel couldn’t be behind a Sect as mysterious as this one, could he?

Her question was soon to be answered.

After signing the Death Contract, Diaila gathered all her things into her space ring and left her room.

There was a worm hidden in her hair that could speak in the voice of the woman who called herself Miss Sun – whom Diaila had decided to call Miss Worm – and tell her what to do and where to go.

She passed by many servants who lowered their heads in her presence, and she took delight in memorizing their faces, all of them.

In the living room, her father was no longer there.

However, Diaila could clearly hear the sound of flesh slapping flesh, and moans echoing from behind the door of Lamiel’s room.

The moans were not only of pleasure, but also of pain.

’Torturing your sex slaves now? What a Vorn-cursed cunt.’

The young girl thought at last, before stepping out of the house for good.

The cool night wind slapped her face, and she let out a breath she didn’t even know she was holding.

Alone, yet watched.

Diaila walked through that darkness, alone like a lost soul searching for the way to Vorn’s Gate, with only the fading light of the moon as her companion.

Her footsteps were a whisper, and she allowed her mind to wander. Thoughts of how her life had been turned upside down in a matter of days surfaced in her mind.

She had taken part in a dreadful mission, where her life had been at risk more times than in all her years before.

She had killed a creature she could not name, and killed it in such a way that she still sometimes dreamed of that mutilation.

She had been chosen as a Blessed by a god, something she had never thought possible.

And now, she was part of a Sect, after being threatened with death.

Things kept happening, but Diaila Law found herself welcoming all of these changes with open arms, ready to bear every wound if necessary.

If this was the price she had to pay to never again live a life where everything she knew revolved around Julaibib, a life where she was mediocre, where she had to cower before arrogant and cynical nobles like that bitch Love and that bastard Klaus... then Diaila was more than happy to pay every last goddamned bit of it.

Vorn’s flies upon the world, she would even be willing to make a deal with the devil himself if it came down to that.

She didn’t care.

From now on, she would live according to her own desires — even the darkest and most twisted of them — and she would do whatever it took to live the life she wanted, even if it meant licking the filthy boots of a Fallen Angel.

As she reached those thoughts, Diaila came back to her senses and found herself in a deserted part of Vorn City.

She lifted her head, looked ahead, and saw Miss Worm standing with her arms crossed.

In that embrace of darkness, her Mask looked like a sun glowering down on her, condescending.

"Come fast," Miss Worm ordered, turning and walking deeper into a barren land. "All of them are waiting."

’All of them?’ Diaila thought, but obeyed nonetheless.

Minutes later, after entering a half-destroyed estate under that darkness, Diaila found herself in a wide, half-ruined space.

The ground was carpeted with shattered glass and stones, sharp like a bloody knife. The walls were ruined, some bearing wide holes. From the ceiling hung a chandelier shaped like a jellyfish, the only thing that was not broken in that shattered world.

And that chandelier spilled out a stunning red light that washed over the space, the kind that made Diaila think of blood.

At that moment, however, she was not thinking of that.

Inside that wounded space, three beings sat, each on a throne made of condensed blood.

Stunning, dreadful, yet oddly fitting.

The one sitting in the middle was obviously a man, dressed in a black suit, his hands covered by crimson gloves. Upon their backs was the symbol of an angel’s wings, ashen and weathered, as though they had long since lost their former glory.

Like the wings of a Fallen.

’Beautiful,’ she whispered, blood pounding in her heart.

The man wore a mask, one Diaila couldn’t help but think contained everything within it, changing constantly.

To his left sat a woman wearing a mask the color of mercury, her legs crossed lazily. The soles of her heels were visible, and as she stretched out her hand, Diaila noticed the very same symbol upon them.

To the man’s right was another woman, and this one was a figure Diaila recognized.

During their mission in the Museum, when they had been attacked, she could have sworn she had seen this same woman wearing the mask of a Moon.

And it was then that everything hit her like the wave of a wrathful storm, and understanding dawned on her, chilling her to the bone.

’Wait... is this... is this the Sect that stole the Museum’s artifacts?’ Diaila thought with wide eyes, almost missing one last person standing on the other side, half hidden by the struggling shadows.

This time, the being wore no mask. And it was a being, a man, she knew extremely well.

"W-William?" Diaila muttered, looking at the stoic swordsman. "What are you doing here?"

"What else?" Miss Worm said, walking towards the three masked people, her comrades, Diaila guessed. "He is here because he has been recruited to be a member of the Sect. Just like you."

"I am here because of the Swordbook you promised me," William corrected. "I have already signed the Death Contract for secrecy and loyalty, as long as my principles are not stepped on. So where is it?"

"Wait." Diaila’s eyes widened. "You were given something?"

William finally turned his head towards her, looking at her as if she were stupid. "Do you think I would be here otherwise? Are you stupid?"

Diaila didn’t have the time to curse nine generations of this bastard. She whirled her attention to the Fallen members, her tone aggrieved. "Don’t tell me I am the only one who got threatened with death?"

"You indeed are the only one," Miss Worm said, her voice carrying the undertone of a mocking smile.

"For a good reason," the man added, resting his cheek on his cupped, gloved hand. "That was the only way to recruit you. You have been rather rude and unfaithful, you know."

"Ah. I hope you gave her a hard time," Mercury said, looking towards Miss Worm. "I deeply regret not getting the opportunity to teach her a lesson for daring to direct killing intent at my husband."

"Oh well. I think she will struggle to see worms from now on without throwing up."

"Sweet."

Diaila looked at them blankly, her earlier assumptions slowly being proven true by the way they talked to each other.

However, before she had the time to voice them, the man in the middle clapped his hands.

"Now, let’s not waste any more time," he said. "I am Earth. This woman to my left is Mercury, my wonderful wife. Be wary of silence whenever she’s around. The one to my right is Moon, our darling and bomb expert. You would be wise to keep your memories safe whenever she speaks to you. And this one is Sun, whom you might want to forgive if she acts a little rudely. She’s been going through something of an identity crisis lately."

"Screw you," Sun hissed under her breath, but loud enough to be heard.

Earth’s voice, however, made it impossible not to listen when he talked.

"Both of you have agreed to sign the Death Contract, and thus to become part of the Fallen Sect, for different reasons. And as you know, our Sect has a codename system." His voice seemed to smile. "Once you receive your codename and Mask, you will be official members, and will obtain what you were promised."

His last words were directed at William, who nodded curtly.

Diaila pursed her lips.

"Shall we begin, then?" he said, and snapped his fingers.

Something appeared in the middle of the space, and the air shuddered with divinity.

It was a box, emitting a concerning amount of power that made both Diaila and William shiver. Their backs straightened, their hearts beating in their throats.

And as if that were not enough...

[This is the Deck of Providence.]

...the voice of a goddess echoed.

’Oh, Vorn take me,’ Diaila whispered, eyes wide. She was sweating.

[Count three seconds, put your hand inside the Deck, and pull it out. You will obtain a Card, and that will be your name. A Mask in the image of your name will be created.]

[Understood?]

Instinctively, both of them nodded.

[Then, Diaila Law, you start.]

Diaila’s body acted before her mind realized what she was doing. She approached the Deck and saw that it was already open. However, its inside was only darkness, revealing nothing.

She took a small but deep breath, counted three seconds in her mind, and immediately put her hand inside the Deck. A strange sensation enveloped her, one that almost made her feel as though her hand was no longer her own.

When Diaila sensed something holding her hand, she pulled it out.

A Card was in her hand.

It was crimson, its surface showing two red spheres, with twin scarlet wolves that seemed to be running towards the twin moons.

The air around her turned metallic, smelling of iron. The hum of drums echoed, as if from far away.

Diaila’s heart stomped against her chest like a mad-touched horse. She read the name of the card, her voice dry.

"Mars."

[Wars, battles, and murders thrill you. You do not fear taking a life, and you revel in watching the light of life slowly fade from your victim’s eyes. You are the Reaper beneath the Twin Red Moons, the Blood Wolf of the Fallen Sect, and wherever you walk, blood trails behind you like a faithful friend.]

[You are Mars.]

The card in her hand glowed with a bright crimson light, and out of that light, a Mask appeared, beautiful and dangerous at once.

Without her even realizing it, a bloodthirsty smile crept onto her lips. She took hold of the Mars Mask and put it on her face.

The moment she did, Diaila felt completely different, as if she were another person entirely.

’This is... incredible.’

"Oh well. We have our Reaper now," Earth said, laughing. "Welcome among the Fallen, Lady of Mars."

A strange surge of emotions pierced her heart, and Diaila, Lady of Mars, nodded to Earth. "Thank... you."

[William Castria. Your turn.]

William stepped forward, fists tight.

The same process happened once more.

He put his hand inside and pulled it out the moment he felt something grasp it.

A card rested in his hand, and upon it was the image of a stunning hourglass, its sands frozen in time.

[Unbending, Unbroken, Unafraid, even before Time itself, even before the End. You are the Blade of Honor, and as long as your Heart remains steadfast, nothing shall ever break your Blade, not even a prophecy decreed by the World itself. You are the Blade of the Fallen. You are...]

William’s eyes shone with an apocalyptic brilliance, and the very air shuddered as his overwhelming sword aura spilled out of his body, unfurling behind him into the projection of an immense silver sword, its shape resembling a cross suspended in the heavens.

[...Saturn.]
