Chapter 294 : KO

Chapter 294: Chapter 294 : KO

The fight between Jax and Zharina had made every single person in the arena forget how to blink.

It had been nearly half an hour of pure madness dedicated to destroying the other. Neither of them held back on the brutality and it showed. They were bleeding from whichever part of their body had been used to throw a blow or absorb one.

Their fists were torn open and raw. Every time they moved their gauntlet hands, blood dripped from the sheer accumulated force of dozens of collisions. Their shins were bruised so badly the skin had turned colors that shouldn’t exist on living people. And their clothes were painted red. Some of it their own blood. Some of it the other’s. Splashed and smeared across fabric that had given up pretending to be functional gear a long time ago as both of them refused the surrender.

Both of them were broken to a point where standing was an achievement in itself. And despite all of that, these two maniacs were enjoying every second of it.

The crowd had been glued to their seats from the moment Jax put on the gauntlet. The exchanges between these two professors made everyone in the arena realize what true strength actually looked like.

And they were all talking about Jax. The man they had now considered a monster because he was fighting on equal terms with the best martial arts professor in the academy. And he was doing it without his swordsmanship. He had abandoned his own fighting style entirely.

They had so many questions. Why was he doing that? Was he holding back this entire time? Was the swordsmanship just something he picked up for fun while his real specialty was beating people with his fists?

Among the crowd, Zoraven was biting his nails down to stubs. His daughter Evangeline spoke beside him. "Father, looks like the winner will be decided soon considering their conditions. And I can see Professor Jax will be the one to fall first. He’s already looking dizzy."

Zoraven replied with a flat tone that carried the weight of his entire financial future. "I hope that’s the case. And I also hope he holds himself back."

Evangeline raised an eyebrow. "So do you believe what people are saying about him?"

"No. They’re all fools who can’t see what that boy is really hiding."

"Hiding?"

"Yes. Something far more dangerous than anything I’ve witnessed in my career." He turned to his daughter. "Can you sense his mana? What do you see?"

Evangeline focused her senses on Jax and said. "A simple yellow mana aura. Tells me he’s not your typical mage. He has a phase two core."

Zoraven said. "Now look more closely. Hiding inside that aura. What do you see?"

She concentrated harder. Then her eyes went wide. "Why is there another mana aura radiating like spikes underneath? That’s impossible. You can’t have two mana cores. And what is that color? I’ve never seen anything like it before."

Zoraven said grimly. "And that’s what concerns me. It doesn’t fit any known category because he is actively suppressing it. And if he ever lets it out or loses control of it, most of the people in this arena would die just from the suffocating pressure alone. Despite him holding it down, my sensory ability has been getting irritated by the overwhelming presence this entire fight."

She stared at him. "What the hell is going on?"

"Don’t worry about it. I don’t think that boy has any intention of turning this place into a graveyard. That’s exactly why he’s fighting on someone else’s terms by snatching Zharina’s artifact instead of using whatever that thing inside him really is."

Evangeline turned her gaze back to the arena and thought. ’How much more will you surprise me, Professor?’

Inside Jax’s head, Echidna, whose power they had all mistaken for Jax’s own, had been providing live commentary on the fight. And it was driving him insane.

"And here this fool dodges a punch and fakes his kick to set up a punch but fails! Oh gods, this is too satisfying to watch! Now my partner, use your—"

Jax snapped internally. "Just shut your damn mouth, you bit— witch. You’re not helping. You’re making it harder to concentrate. So zip it and watch how I end this."

Echidna went quiet. Hurt. Like a child who got scolded mid-playtime and didn’t understand what she did wrong. "But I was just..."

She fell silent. And in that silence, Jax checked his HP.

[HP: 700 / 80,000]

He thought. ’One more hit and not only I loose this fight but also I lose everything.’

Then a grin spread across his bloody face despite the situation and he said to Zharina. "It’s evening snacks time, dear. So let’s wrap this up."

Zharina cursed him and charged. So did Jax. Both of them running across what used to be a flat arena floor but was now a hollowed and ruined wasteland they had created together.

Their fists shot at each other simultaneously. But this time Jax’s gauntlet hand caught Zharina’s right fist while her gauntlet hand caught his. They were interlocked again. Face to face. Grinding against each other’s grip.

Zharina was crushing his fist while speaking through clenched teeth. "Just give up already, Professor. We can find a way to sort out the enslavement because I was the one who placed the bet of making you a slave in the first place. That woman doesn’t have the right to it. And if she throws a tantrum about it, I have a solution for that."

Jax said through his own bloody grin. "Don’t worry. I don’t want to be the cause of that much trouble. So I’ll handle it right here and now. By defeating you."

He headbutted her.

His forehead cracked against hers. Half of her face was covered by the divine armor’s aura but the other half felt the full impact. Both of them went blank for a moment. Senses scrambled. Vision swimming.

Zharina blinked the world back into focus and saw Jax’s face in front of her. Bloody. Grinning. Eyes barely staying open. Blood was pouring from the gash his own headbutt had opened on his forehead.

The impact had dropped him to 50 HP. He was collapsing. Barely standing. Latching onto Zharina’s grip as the only thing keeping him vertical.

But he still managed to say. "KO. You lose."

Zharina had no idea what that meant. But before she could ask, a fist connected with her back. She let go of Jax who crumpled to the ground.

She struggled to turn around only to receive a palm strike directly to her stomach that split blood from her mouth and sent her crashing to the floor beside him.

It was Bruise Lee. Jax’s summon. Called into existence during the exact moment of the headbutt when both of them were stunned. He had hidden the mana usage behind the impact and the presence of the summon behind Zharina’s temporarily scrambled senses.

She was played. Again.

Both of them lay on the ruined arena floor. Side by side. Two broken bodies that had beaten each other into something that medical textbooks would refuse to illustrate.

Zharina realized it was over. She said while staring at the sky above. "You played me again, Professor. You are one unpredictable bastard and fighting you was the greatest fun I have ever had."

She tried to move her fingers. They didn’t respond.

"But seems like the fun has to end here. My body isn’t responding anymore."

Jax said from beside her, struggling to move any muscle in his body. "Too bad for you. Mine is still good as new."

He couldn’t even turn his head.

Zharina smiled at the sky and said. "Do you know why I told you a secret that I haven’t shared with anyone? And do you know that I actually wanted you to win?"
