Chapter 295: Chapter 295 : My Man (I Mean My Enemy, Obviously)

Zharina continued while staring at the sky above the ruined arena. "I never spoke to anyone about what happened to Master. How he went missing. His story. The Celestials. None of it."

She took a breath.

"Very few people in this world even know that Celestials exist. Fewer still know about their corruption. But none of them know that these beings will be the very reason for the coming calamity. The apocalypse that will swallow this world."

Her voice steadied. "I haven’t shared my ambition or the real reason I chose to be here with anyone else. Only you."

She paused. "But why? Honestly, I don’t have the exact answer. Just like I don’t have one for why I wanted you to win."

She looked at the clouds. "Maybe I’m seeing you as the perfect person to heal the corruption growing inside this academy. To lead it in a way I never could. You know, at first I hated you. Wanted you terminated. That arrogant attitude you carried in front of everyone made you a threat in my eyes. A threat to the academy I swore to protect."

A slight smile crossed her busted lips. "And soon that threat turned to admiration. After watching your fearlessly stupid actions one after another."

Her voice went deeper. "Also, Master left one hint. He said that when there is huge changes within the academy, that’s when the beginning arrives. Either the calamity or the curation of it."

She turned her head slightly toward Jax. "And I can tell everything has been changing since the moment you stepped onto this land. The chaos. The fall of leaders. The political shifts. The arrival of champions. It all points to one thing. This is that time."

She added. "I might be wrong though. Maybe I’m just reading the negatives as positives because I know how chaotic you are. But still. I want you to fight this unknown battle alongside me."

Jax said. "You’re thinking way too highly of me. And I don’t work for anyone. Neither do I follow orders."

"But I can assure you of one thing. If those Celestials or anyone associated with them tries to meddle in my affairs, I will turn the tables. Because the next prophecy your master’s mother sees won’t be a calamity coming for this realm. It will be one heading straight for theirs."

Zharina smiled genuinely.

Then she said. "You know, I decided to let you win this tournament. That’s why I rejected the traditional fight format between the students and chose this, I would have lost deliberately. Acting at the very last moment to make it look convincing."

She let out a small laugh.

"But your smug face kept telling me not to surrender. Not until I had broken your ego along with your body first. My plan was to yield just moments before you passed out. Making you the victor while also making sure you knew I handed you that win out of pity."

She looked at him. "But you didn’t even let me have that satisfaction. I wanted more time to talk with you. But it seems like things need to end here."

Her eyes caught the arbiter walking toward them across the destroyed arena.

"Now get up before this fight gets declared a draw as well."

The arbiter reached them and asked whether either professor was able to continue or if he should declare a draw and call for medical assistance.

Zharina shook her head. A clear surrender.

Jax struggled. For minutes. Getting up. Falling down. Getting up again. Falling again. Until his legs held him upright for a single second. Just one second of standing that the arbiter registered as proof of continuation ability.

Victory was declared. And Jax immediately dropped back to his knees.

He looked at Zharina and said. "Don’t be sad. Our talks can continue on our date."

Zharina’s smile was hiding a furnace of anger behind it. "Don’t think I’ve forgotten what you did to me before. I will never forget that. And I will make you pay for it. And I will find out why you did it. Whether it was your twisted idea of punishment or something else. But one thing is certain. You will beg on your knees."

Jax said casually. "Didn’t you say the exact same thing last time? But hey, this time around I might go a little easy on you. I like roleplaying submissive on my mood days and I would love to see a fierce dragon as my mistress."

Zharina was cursing him with every word her broken jaw could produce. But when he turned away, her face held a smile she didn’t let him see. She thought. ’This bastard is clearly hiding many things behind that mask of his. And I will find every single one of them soon enough.’

Meanwhile Jax was still on his knees looking at his students sprinting toward him across the devastated arena floor.

Lilith. Seraphina. And even Elira who should be last one showcasing this side. All three of them had tears of joy streaming down their faces as they closed the distance and slammed into him with a group hug from every possible direction.

Elira said completely forgetting her royal image while tears dripped down her cheeks. "You did it, Professor! We have won!"

Roxana called from a distance where she stood with Seris and Astrid. "I think we need to give him some air and healing support. He’s trembling."

Not a single word of that reached the three girls’ ears. They only tightened their grip.

Inside his head, Echidna spoke up with curious enthusiasm. "Won’t you introduce me to these lovely ladies?"

Jax replied internally. "Why would I?"

"Hmpf."

The pouting sound made him give in. "Fine. These are my students who hold great respect for me. Just like most people do. Unlike a certain someone."

Echidna’s voice shifted to teasing. "You’re joking, right? About the first part at least. Because I can tell they aren’t looking at you like a teacher."

"You’re just imagining things."

His eyes scanned the figures standing behind the hugging trio and found Astrid. She was happy and worried at the same time. And she was trying her absolute hardest to hold herself together so the suspicion about them wouldn’t grow. Standing there with folded arms and a face that was performing ’casual indifference’ so badly it deserved its own award.

Jax introduced her to Echidna internally. "And that right there is my girl."

Astrid, oblivious to the introduction happening inside his skull, spoke up when she caught his stare. "What? Do you expect me to join that pile? Never in my life is that happening."

Lilith pulled back slightly and said. "Hey Astrid, you shouldn’t be this rude to Professor. Not after everything he’s done for us. Not after his victorious fight."

Astrid said with her arms still tightly crossed. "You girls are acting too weird. Getting all shocked and emotional over his victory. Wasn’t it obvious that my man would win the duel the moment it was announced?"

The words left her mouth before her brain could review them.

Every pair of eyes turned to her.

Astrid’s face went through a color transformation that would make a chameleon jealous. She stammered out a correction at the speed of someone trying to outrun their own words. "By my man I meant the person worthy to be my target. And my enemy. That’s what I meant. Obviously."

[A few hours passed]

Jax was resting in the infirmary. His body was wrapped in bandages and healing runes. The room was quiet except for the hum of recovery magic doing its work on muscles that had been put through a tournament’s worth of abuse.

Then the door opened slowly. Just a crack.

Astrid’s head peeked inside. Her eyes scanning the room carefully. Checking every corner. Every bed. Making absolutely sure there was no other soul present.

Satisfied that the coast was clear, she slipped inside and closed the door behind her.
