Chapter 312 : More Complexities and Concerns
Chapter 312: Chapter 312 : More Complexities and Concerns
Jax blinked. "What??"
Evangeline stayed calm while Delphine beside her looked like she was about to hyperventilate. "I am afraid we have been sent to the past."
Lavinia’s eyes started gleaming with an excitement that had no business existing in this situation. "You are not joking, right? I need to go find my great-great-great-grandparents right now! I am going to walk right up to them, introduce myself as a prophet, drop some future knowledge to prove it, and then tell them that in six hundred years they will give birth to an absolute masterpiece of a child!"
She was bouncing on her heels. "I’ll make them write it into the family will! Rule number one: never tell Lavinia no. Rule number two: triple her allowance!"
Delphine snapped through gritted teeth. "Shut up, you useless idiot. You don’t understand a single thing. What if we are really in the past and every move we make changes our present? What if when we go back to our world, no one recognizes us? What if we don’t even exist anymore because of the butterfly effect?"
Lavinia’s excitement drained from her face like someone had pulled a plug. "No way. Father. Mother. Big Sis." She swallowed hard. "We are screwed."
Delphine turned her hissing gaze toward Jax. "If this absurdity is true, then this fool is standing in the very same path trying to change every single thing. We have also looked into his background. Not only is he a nobody but he doesn’t even have roots to begin with."
Her voice sharpened. "He has been lying from the start. Remember him saying there were people waiting for him back in the present? But in reality there is no one. And how would a monster like this have anyone?"
Lavinia looked genuinely hurt hearing those words. "Delphine, you can’t just say such rude things. And your perspective might be wrong. Maybe this is just a virtual world created for us."
Delphine fired back without hesitation. "Are you still trying to protect him? How foolish are all of you that you can’t see the truth? He is some psycho who loves chaos. Or maybe he is part of the cult that wants to see the end of the world."
Jax was staring at her not speaking. Just staring with eyes that carried a very clear warning. That if she dared to say one more word, it would be the last thing her mouth ever produced.
Delphine didn’t get scared. Instead a grin spread across her face as she said. "Am I wrong, Professor? Now that your plan is busted, why not just—"
Before the next word could escape her lips, before Jax could move a single inch, a green light descended from the sky directly onto Delphine.
Jax looked beside him. And there was Tempris. Floating in the air with mana flowing around her tiny body in spiraling currents. She looked totally pissed. And the rage on that small face was unmistakably about to commit murder.
On the impact of heaven’s punishment, or rather a child’s punishment, Delphine screamed in agony. Her skin was peeling off in mere seconds. Layer by layer. The green light burning through her like concentrated acid.
Tempris spoke from above with fury shaking every word. "He is not a monster or a nobody! He is a good person! And if you ever say mean things about him again, I will shut your mouth permanently!"
Then suddenly the light vanished. Athanasia had walked toward the group and raised her hand toward the screaming Delphine. Within seconds the burns were healed. Skin restored as no scar remained. As if nothing had happened.
Delphine dropped to her knees breathing heavily. "See?! This girl is a monster! Who knows what she will do when she grows up or when she learns to control her power! We need to eliminate this threat for the future of the world!"
Jax looked down at her with cold disinterest. "Monster? Because all I see is that she is the one who saved your life from me. If she hadn’t intervened, I would have surely shut you down myself. And trust me, no healing magic could have stitched your beheaded skull back onto your body."
Athanasia ignored the argument entirely. She walked toward Tempris who had landed back on the ground after her magic was nullified. Her hand reached out toward the child.
But before it could make contact, another hand blocked it. Jax had gripped Athanasia’s wrist mid-reach.
He spoke with a voice that left nothing to interpretation. "I would strongly suggest pulling that hand back. If you try moving it an inch forward, I won’t hesitate to make it your biggest regret."
Athanasia looked down at the hand gripping her wrist. Disgust flickered across her face. He was the first male to ever dare touch her like this. But she composed herself. Pulled her wrist back. And let out a soft laugh.
"Are you really trying to threaten me?"
Jax’s hand drifted to the sheath of his sword. That was his answer.
Athanasia’s amusement didn’t fade. "You really have gone insane. But relax. I am not here to hurt the child. I simply have my own questions. And she is the one who holds the answers."
Her voice steadied into something more measured. "I knew we had traveled to the past from the very beginning. The mana density. The atmosphere. No illusion or virtual reality or conjured space could ever replicate this so perfectly. But there are still many mysteries about this era that I am eager to unravel. And she holds a key."
She met Jax’s eyes. "So let me look into her mind."
Then her tone dropped. The air around her turned heavy with raw, suffocating magic that pressed against everyone’s chest. "Don’t make this difficult. If you refuse, you will leave me no choice but to force you out of the way."
Jax thought for several seconds. Then looked down at Tempris who was standing behind his leg gripping his pants.
He spoke carefully. "I don’t want a fight for no reason here. I have things to figure out myself."
Then he turned toward Athanasia. Stepped forward until his face was inches from hers. Close enough to see the confidence sitting behind those eyes that had never once been challenged.
"But if you try to harm her. If I even sense that she is uncomfortable."
His voice went flat. "I will step in and shatter that supreme arrogance of yours. Cross the line, and I will show you exactly how foolish you are for thinking you are the most dangerous person in this forest."
