Chapter 322 : The Empire is Done For [6]

Jax released the body swap.

Oberon blinked back into existence inside his own body. The first thing he registered was a naked woman clinging to his chest while looking absolutely terrified.

He scanned downward and realized it was Lady Isadora who happened to be naked. Then he continued the scan further down the same path and found his own rock-hard cock pressed between the two of them like glue.

Well, it was certainly leaking glue.

He realized he was naked. She was naked. And whatever had happened to produce this arrangement was completely absent from his memory.

He shoved her away in complete shock. "What in the— Lady Isadora, what is the meaning of this?! Why are you— why am I—"

He was fumbling with his words, his brain short-circuiting between confusion and horror, when he spotted Damian. Standing in the rubble of what used to be a wall. Dust settling on his shoulders. And in his eyes sat something Oberon had never seen in twenty years of friendship.

Damian watched how instantly his brother’s face shifted. How the confident, smooth-talking seducer who had been whispering poison into his fiancée’s ear suddenly became a stammering, confused fool the moment the curtain dropped. Twenty years of brotherhood and Damian was only now realizing just how gifted Oberon’s acting had always been.

So he spoke. Tried to be sarcastic. But neither his face nor his voice could commit to it. "Go on, brother. Finish your sentence. I am genuinely curious what excuse comes next."

Oberon’s confusion was spiraling out of control. "Damian, what is happening here? Why is Lady Isadora undressed? Why am I undressed? What the actual hell is going—"

Isadora cut through his words with tears streaming and horror filling every line of her face. "What are you saying, Your Majesty?! You are the one who promised me! You said you would protect me! You said you would marry me! Save me from Emperor Damian! How can you stand there and pretend you didn’t just vow to give me everything?!"

Oberon looked at her as if she had sprouted a second head and that head was also saying things that made no sense. "What are you talking about?! How can I possibly say any of that when you are already betrothed to my brother?!"

And that was when Isadora completely broke.

Her tears multiplied. Then came a laugh which was both hollow and broken. The laugh of someone who just realized the ground beneath them was never real to begin with.

"So I was being fooled from the very beginning. Every word. Every touch. Every promise of a new life. A real marriage."

Her voice cracked into something ugly. "You orchestrated my ruin. You painted your own brother as a monster so I would beg you to hide me. You took my body. My trust. My honor. And you laid it out on this bed like a sacrifice. And now you stand there looking at me with disgust?"

She was shaking so violently her teeth were chattering. "How twisted is your soul? Was my terror really that amusing to you? Was destroying a woman’s entire life just a fun little distraction before your morning court session?"

Oberon’s confusion snapped into fury. He grabbed her by the throat and said through gritted teeth. "I never did any of that. I can never do that. And why would I? You were the woman my brother chose."

Then something clicked in his head. He released her and she dropped to her knees choking. A cold smile crept across his face as the pieces assembled themselves in his mind.

"Now I understand everything. You are from the rebellion faction. One of those shadow rats working in the dark to tear this empire apart from the inside."

He straightened up. "But all your little plans failed tonight, dear. Because the accusations you are throwing at me? Damian would never believe them."

He turned to Damian with the confidence of twenty years of unshakable brotherhood sitting in his chest. "You see this, Damian? These rebel rats came with zero preparation. Zero understanding of the bond we share. They actually thought they could tear down a lifetime of loyalty with a naked whore and a few crocodile tears."

Damian didn’t smile back.

Instead tears started forming in his eyes. Not from sadness. From a rage so deep it had burned through every other emotion on its way out and arrived as pure, undiluted betrayal.

He said. "No, Oberon. I was the one who had absolutely zero understanding of what we shared."

Oberon’s smile died on his face.

Damian continued. His voice trembling. Not with weakness but with the kind of anger that precedes the collapse of everything. "I never thought I would see this day. I never thought I would witness the real and devil face of the man I considered more than a brother."

He added. "You just showed me how foolish I was. To have believed in you. To have thought that we were chasing the same dream since childhood. To rule the whole world together and ascend as the most powerful beings. I was a fool to not recognize your manipulative words. Wrapped in love. Wrapped in care. Wrapped in a brotherhood that was rotting from the inside while I protected it like it was sacred."

His fists were shaking at his sides. "I never thought I would hear the poison you carry for me while you were fucking my fiancée. I never thought I would watch my friend betray me with the woman I chose to build my future with."

His voice cracked on the last part. "I never imagined being stabbed by the only person I had left in this world."

Oberon took a desperate step forward. "Fucking?! There is absolutely no way I could do that! Damian, don’t tell me you are going to trust this wretched woman’s word over mine?!"

Damian spoke with a flatness that was more terrifying than any scream could ever be. "Oh come on, Oberon. Drop the act because it is useless now. I heard everything. I saw everything. I watched you pleasure her through the window. I listened to you mock me through the wall. And I know exactly what you carry for me in your heart. I know how the two of you shattered my entire world in a matter of minutes."

His eyes burned with something that had no name. "So to answer your question. I do not trust either of you. Because you are already dead to me. And very soon you two will be dead to the rest of the world as well."

Oberon screamed. "I don’t understand what is going on! I don’t remember any of this! I don’t remember touching her! The last thing I recall is accepting the tea from Isadora and then nothing! Everything after that is completely blank!"

Then something hit him. His eyes went wide as they scanned the room and landed on the two empty teacups sitting on the table.

"Wait. The tea. Yes! It was the tea! She invited me to drink it! She must have spiked it with something that knocked me unconscious! Whatever happened after that was not me! Damian, she is the one behind all of this! She drugged me and staged this entire thing!"
