Chapter 323 : The Empire is Done For [7]
Both pairs of eyes found Isadora who was standing there in complete trauma. She protested through sobs. "I didn’t do anything! Your Majesty, he is lying!"
She stumbled toward Oberon and grabbed his hands with the desperation of a woman watching her last thread of hope unravel. "Tell me, Your Highness. Please tell me this is all an act. Tell me this is some cruel test or a prank designed to see how I would react. Tell me this is your plan to wake me up from this nightmare. Because I cannot take it anymore."
Damian’s voice cut through the chamber with the authority of a judge passing a sentence that had already been decided. "Enough."
Both of them went stiff.
Damian walked between the two of them. But before he could speak, Oberon beat him to it. His voice was begging now.
"Damian, listen to me. Do not fall for her venomous lies! You know exactly what you mean to me. You know the bond we have forged in blood over the last twenty years. I am begging you to remember who your real family is."
His eyes were pleading. "So look me in the eye and tell me right now. Whose words do you choose? Your brother... or this wretched woman?"
Damian looked at him. Looked at the man he had called brother for two decades. The man he had built an empire beside. And the tears that had been building in his eyes finally dropped.
His face was broken as he said. "I know exactly how much you mean to me now."
A spear materialized in his hand. A god-tier artifact and a kind of weapon that had drunk oceans of blood and brought countless wars to their end. It appeared with a hum that made every hair in the room stand on end.
He raised it. And swung while saying. "I won’t forget what you have done for me."
The spear pierced through Isadora’s chest.
Blood erupted from her body. She looked down at the weapon jutting from between her ribs as if she couldn’t believe the world could be this cruel to her twice in one night.
She was dying. Blood and tears mixing together as they fell and pooled on the ground beneath her. But before the world took her she gathered whatever strength was left in her body and spoke.
Every word soaked in blood and venom. "I curse you both. I curse the thrones you sit on and the crowns you wear. May the gold rot upon your heads."
She coughed blood. "I curse every generation yet to come. Every single man of your bloodlines or any man who dares to claim the throne will die a miserable and agonizing death."
Her eyes found both of them one last time. "And as for the two of you, I curse you to lose your minds. You will die like rabid, diseased dogs in the dirt. Violently tearing at each other’s throats until there is absolutely nothing left."
Her body gave up. She slid off the spear and hit the floor.
Meanwhile Jax was peeking around the corner at the carnage he had authored. Knights and mages were gathering rapidly from every direction, drawn by the sounds of walls collapsing and screams and imperial-level mana signatures flaring.
Echidna’s voice was seething inside his skull. "You evil bastard. Look at what you have done. You took an innocent woman’s life tonight."
Jax tried to push the guilt down and said. "Innocent? She was betraying her own fiancé. I was merely a tool sent by the heavens to test the loyalty of her heart. Turns out she failed. And failing always has a price. I didn’t imagine it would be this steep but what can you do. Life has never been fair."
He glanced down at his lower half and added. "By the way why is my cock so hard right now? What exactly did you do while you were in my body—"
Echidna snapped. "Don’t you dare try to change the topic!"
Then after a pause she spoke with a more serious tone. "But now that I think about it, I heard that Delphine girl talking earlier about the past. About how a woman was the reason the two best friends were torn apart. An internal war that split the empire into two separate nations and started centuries of hatred between them. So I am guessing you were the one behind all of it. You played a major role in this history."
Jax was connecting dots that were making his stomach turn in ways he didn’t expect. "Now I get it. Isadora’s curse really did wonders. Now I understand why the kingdoms of Meridax and Veldora don’t have a good record with their kings. Sylvie is the lone queen of her kingdom while Adelina rules hers. It makes sense now why the people weren’t shocked at that funeral of Adelina’s husband. They knew it was inevitable."
His jaw tightened. "That bastard would have taken the throne after his mother’s death. And greed made him lose his life just as the curse promised. To think my Adelina was supposed to be forced into a political marriage with a dead man walking. She was going to hand her future over to a man with an expiration date stamped on his forehead."
His fist clenched. "Fuck you wherever you are, Seris’s father."
Back inside the ruined chamber, Oberon had pulled Damian into a tight embrace. His voice was shaking with relief. "You scared me, brother. For a moment I truly thought you would choose her over me. But I always knew that nothing in this world could separate us. Thank you, Damian. Thank you for believing in me."
They separated. And Damian spoke again. Same flat tone. But something new lurked beneath it that Oberon was too relieved to notice.
"You know, brother. Your words from earlier with Isadora really did break something inside me. It truly hurt more than anything I have ever felt."
Oberon opened his mouth to respond. "What do—"
Damian continued without letting him finish. "You claim you were drugged. But isn’t it true that when a man is drugged, when his consciousness is stripped away and his walls come down, whatever he says comes directly from the heart? Carrying no deceit? No filter? No performance?"
Oberon’s blood went cold. "Damian, what are you—"
He never finished that sentence because not only his words were cut off but his hand was cut off as well.
Because Damian’s spear flew from his hand. Not aimed at the chest this time. It tore through Oberon’s shoulder and separated his entire arm from his body. The severed limb flew backward and the spear continued its path, crushing through three walls behind them before finally embedding itself deep in stone.
Oberon screamed. Collapsed to his knees. His remaining hand gripping the place where his arm used to be as blood poured between his fingers in a river that wouldn’t stop.
The warriors outside the chamber witnessed it all happen through the gaping hole where the wall used to be. And seeing the violence they finally moved.
The faction split instantly. Half of the warriors rushed to Damian’s side. The other half surrounded Oberon. Weapons drawn. Steel pointed at former brothers in arms. Friends who had served together for decades now standing on opposite sides of a line that had just been drawn in blood.
Oberon looked up at Damian through pain and rage and twenty years of brotherhood that was hemorrhaging out of him faster than the blood from his shoulder.
"How could you do this to me?"
Damian looked down at him. At the man who had been his other half since childhood. And spoke with a voice that carried the death of everything they had ever built together.
"This is nothing compared to the pain you gave me tonight. And you know me very well, brother. I return favors tenfold."
His eyes went dark. "So prepare yourself to receive exactly what you gave me."
