Chapter 376: The Merciful One Is Gone

Chapter 376: Chapter 376: The Merciful One Is Gone

Harry held his grin. “At least you still remember my name.”

“So it really is you.” Jax studied him. “And here I’d half talked myself into believing some other player had already finished you off, leaving me to lie awake worrying about those poor doomed comrades of yours, the ones who will be stuck living out the rest of their lives trapped in this world. And yet here you are. Having fun.”

Harry took a step forward. “Fun?” A low laugh dragged itself out of him, rough and cracked at the edges. “Kehh. You can’t even begin to imagine what I went through behind those closed doors. The humiliation. The pain. Every single day, every single night, and every last bit of it tracing back to one person. You.”

“You can’t imagine how it feels when the chance to end your own suffering finally comes knocking. When your own mind lays the escape out in front of you, the quiet, the chance to set the misery down at last, and then, in the very same breath, drags up the horror that drove you to the edge of it in the first place…”

He fell silent, fist clenching at his side as he lived through the worst of it all over again.

Then a smile swept across his face. “But every night has its end. The dark stretches on and on until you’re certain the sun’s forgotten how to rise. And then, right when you’ve stopped believing in it altogether, it crawls up over the horizon anyway. The gods kept me waiting a long, long time. In the end, it was worth every second.”

“Because I’ve finally got my chance to make you feel exactly what I felt. I’d have shown you sooner but I had a debt of my own to settle first, to the woman who let me out of my cage. Otherwise I’d have already come for every last woman who ever ran to your rescue. Every single one of them, from your world and from this one both.”

His smile sharpened to a point. “I hear you’ve grown awfully attached to the queen of Veldora. I do wonder what face you’ll make once I’ve beaten you, caged you, and made you sit and watch while I play with that woman first, right there in front of—”

He never got to finish it.

Jax vanished, the sheer speed of it tearing a seam through the air, both swords already swinging for Harry’s face. But before the steel could land, a shield bloomed into being around him. It shattered under the assault all the same, and in that same instant a blast of fire magic slammed into Jax’s ribs and threw him back several meters.

Harry let out a slow breath and smiled. “Hahh. You really had me there for a moment. I shouldn’t have doubted this insane little magician I picked up just a few moments ago.”

Jax’s eyes found the summon standing behind Harry, and he knew the dead man on sight. Vergis. A mage of the Silver Vanguard. The very same third ranker the scouts had reported fallen in battle.

He turned back to Harry. “Don’t drag her or anyone else, into a fight that’s ours.”

Harry laughed. “Do you understand it now? How I felt, back then? Either way, the debt’s nowhere close to paid. You know, I wanted to drag that Adelina woman along too. And those girls of yours from your world, the ones who got in our way before, who are currently hiding and playing being a mercenary. I’d have killed every one of them. Raised them as my summons. Made their own corpses swing at you while I used their bodies for my own amusement, and made certain you watched every second of it.”

His fist tightened. “But that damn Loki woman wouldn’t allow it. She did make me a promise, though. Win against you and I can do whatever I please.”

He exhaled. “Ah, speaking of that terrifying woman. I have no idea how you managed to make an enemy of her, but you dug your own grave the second you pissed her off. As long as I stay on her good side, there’s no chance I lose this little game of gods. No one stands against the woman who fooled an entire nation of sea elves and lit a civil war inside their borders in a single day, just by handing me orders. She’s the kind who can bend the gods themselves into fighting her wars for her. So the ogres, the demons, those prideful high dragons, every surprise still waiting out there? Nothing. Footnotes.”

His grin spread wider. “She even knows your every move before you make it. She told me I’d find you on this exact path, before we’d so much as set foot in this place. So even if you somehow beat me tonight, there’s no beating a monster like her. But it won’t come to that. Because you don’t get to walk past me—”

He raised both hands, and the whole ground bloomed with tiny pinpricks of magical light. Small at first, then swelling, growing, larger and larger, taking shape.

“Because I’m not the same man I was last time. And tonight, there’s no one coming to save you.”

The entire lake district they stood in drowned beneath Harry’s summons. The vinery, the orchids, the little arching bridges, all of it crumbling to ruin as thousands upon thousands of the dead closed in around the two of them.

Jax was still taking it all in when Harry spoke again. “These are my newest acquisitions. Got them all for free, running Loki’s little errands. Sparking fights here and there. Filling graveyards.”

Orcs, ogres, sea elves, giants, demons, hobgoblins, lizardmen, liches, entire legions of skeletons, and plenty more besides. But instead of flinching, Jax laughed. “Hah. Hahaha.” He wiped at the corner of his eye. “You think you’ve changed? Don’t make me laugh, man. All I’m looking at is the same pathetic little simp, still bleeding, still dragging himself down the road of vengeance and straight into hell, all for a girl who never once gave a single damn about you.”

His grin turned cruel. “You want proof? If she’d had even an ounce of feeling for you, your name would have crossed her lips at least once when it actually mattered. When I had her and banged her. When I played with her holes, when I made her sit naked on the cold ice and shiver, she’d have remembered you for one single second. But no. The only things that ever came out of that mouth were how her friend Masha would avenge her, and a string of screams that sounded an awful lot like pound me harder, daddy. If I recall correctly.”

Harry cursed under his breath, teeth grinding so hard they nearly cracked, and shouted, “You’ll learn the price of disrespect.” And with that the whole ground began to tremble as his summons surged forward at Jax.

Meanwhile, Jax simply strolled toward Harry, not so much as sparing a glance for the battalion thundering down on him. “If you think you’re the only one here who came back stronger, then let me show you exactly how wrong you are.”

As the words left him, two figures bled out of the shadow at his back, the darkness folding and setting itself into two perfect bodies. Bruise Lee. And Sword Saint Malice.

Malice charged in alone, carving straight through the front line, vaulting from one summon to the next and leaving at least one severed limb behind on the ground at each. He moved through that endless tide of corpses like a reaper taking a leisurely evening walk.

Harry stood there, stunned. And then Jax spoke, the anger crawling back up into his voice. “You could have mocked me, Harry. Insulted me. I’m well used to it by now. But the moment you ran that mouth and crossed the one line you never should have, the moment you spoke ill of my future wife, you dug your own grave with it.”

Harry blinked, thrown. “Wife?”

Jax nodded. “You hurt Adelina back when I didn’t even understand what she was to me. And even then, not knowing a thing, my rage alone was enough to drag you through hell. So go on. Put that imagination of yours to work. Picture what I’ll do to you now, when I know exactly who she is to me. When every last reason I once had to keep you breathing is gone, and that filthy mouth is the only part of you left worth silencing.”

His eyes went flat and cold. “The version of me you barely survived last time was the merciful one, Harry. You won’t be so lucky twice.”
