Chapter 377: Harry VS Jax [1]

Chapter 377: Chapter 377: Harry VS Jax [1]

The fight raged on, only it wasn’t the masters trading blows. It was their summons doing all the bleeding, while Jax hadn’t so much as lifted a finger. He simply stood there and watched Harry watch his own colossal army crumble against a single opponent. Malice.

Bruise Lee, for his part, stayed welded to Jax’s side, putting his martial arts to work on anything that slipped past Malice or got the bright idea that Jax, or Bruise Lee himself, made for the easier target.

Bruise Lee watched Malice having the time of her life out there and turned to Jax with a pout. “Master, that venomous little chick is stealing my whole show. At this rate she’ll be strutting around bragging that she’s your one and only right hand. Please, just let me off the leash. Let me go save my reputation. I’ll do anything you ask.”

Jax’s shadow extraction was a very different beast from Harry’s. Where Harry yanked actual corpses up to shamble about like puppets on a string, Jax’s summons carried no real bodies at all.

They were shadow given shape, darkness folded into the form of a living person, and with their real souls stripped away and bound to him, they were no mindless robots. They thought. They learned.

They came without memories of their past lives, but every fight at Jax’s side leveled them up a little more, and it showed. Bruise Lee had grown loud and dramatic and far too full of himself, while Malice still sat at the stage Bruise Lee had long outgrown, blunt and robotic, all blade and no banter. For now.

“Quit your whining,” Jax said. “I’ve told you a thousand times over, you’re nowhere near Malice’s level. Toss you into that crowd and you’d be slaughtered before I finished a single blink.”

Bruise Lee’s eyes welled up. “Master…”

“Come on. You know your job, don’t you? Aura-farm at my side with all the confidence in the world. Act like you’re a bigger deal than Malice ever was. And break the enemy’s morale just by standing there looking smug about it.”

Jax went on. “And you know exactly why I’ve never once kicked you out of my summon slot, useless as you are.”

Bruise Lee sniffled. “Yes. Because you think of me as family.”

“Correct.”

‘Though that’s the smaller reason,’ Jax thought. ‘The real one is that he sips barely any mana, and he makes a flawless bait and shield for a man cursed with the worst mana pool alive, all thanks to my main class built on swordsmanship.’

Bruise Lee’s head whipped around. “Master, are you forgetting I can read your every thought? What in the world is this ‘smaller reason’ business? And me, bait? That was a joke, right? Please tell me that was a joke.”

“Of course I was joking,” Jax said, smooth as oil. “We’re family. Yes. One big, happy family.”

Off in the distance, Malice’s giggle rang clear through both their heads while she carved her way through the horde.

Bruise Lee’s fist clenched. “You see that, master? That, right there, is exactly what I keep trying to tell you. She understands every single word out of our mouths. She just plays the innocent little doll the second you turn to look at her.”

“Enough,” Jax said. “Save the squabbling for home. We’ve got business to settle here first.”

He turned to Harry, who was hissing through his teeth at the sight of Malice slicing his army apart like so much wet paper.

“Impossible…” Harry breathed.

“What?” Jax teased. “It’s the very same skill as yours, you know. I just had the good sense to invest in quality over quantity.”

Harry spat a curse and barked an order at one of the undead Silver Vanguard knights guarding him, sending it charging straight at Jax.

But from behind Jax’s frame, Bruise Lee came bursting out and buried a punch deep in the knight’s gut, knocking the sword clean out of its grip. As the knight’s head lolled forward onto his shoulder, still busy processing the pain, Bruise Lee used that one resting shoulder, and every last ounce of strength he had, to heave the entire guard clean up off the ground.

He locked eyes with Harry, voice cold as a fresh grave. “Consider yourself a very lucky man that my hands happen to be tied right now. Because otherwise? I’d be redecorating this whole lake district in a lovely shade of your blood, all for the unforgivable sin of talking over my master. Do you have the faintest idea how disrespectful that is? Do you?”

Harry blanched, raw terror washing over him at those deadly, unblinking eyes.

But Jax saw straight through it, the pain and the performance both. Bruise Lee was fighting with everything he had not to let the strain show, balancing that impossible weight on a single shoulder like it weighed nothing at all. And Jax knew full well that if his summon had owned a real body, he’d have shit his pants ten times over by now.

Then Malice’s voice rang out in his head. ‘Master. I’m losing my presence. I think this is about my limit.’

Jax checked his status at once.

[HP: 80,000 / 80,000]

[MP: 200 / 10,000]

‘Already?’ Jax thought. ‘It’s only been half an hour, Malice. Don’t tell me you’ve been showing off those advanced techniques of yours again. The ones that drain my mana twice as fast.’

She ignored him entirely and lunged at an ogre, but her sword winked out halfway through the swing, her form dissolving slowly along with it.

The same fate swept over Bruise Lee, though he managed a few words before he went. “Master, she defied your orders—”

He never finished.

Harry caught sight of Jax’s status window and broke into a grin. “Puahaha. Looks like you’ve run bone-dry on mana. And clean out of luck, while you’re at it.”

He threw his head back and roared at the horde. “Everyone! Break his bones, tear his limbs off one by one, but make damn sure you deliver him to me alive.”

Jax rolled his neck and stretched, eyeing the army surging toward him, crushing and stumbling over the skulls and shattered limbs of their own comrades, the ones Malice had already laid out in the dust with a poison vicious enough to melt the bone right off them.

Lazily, almost bored, he drew both swords from his back and charged headfirst into the remaining five hundred undead.
