Chapter 1837: Implementing Something New

"So... what did you want to tell us exactly, Professor?"

Taking a few bites of the chiffon cake the others had ordered for her 20 year anniversary, Veradine raised her head in response to one of the Scholars asking her a question.

"Is it your idea for the next article?" the Scholar asked, only for her expression to turn into that of expectation and excitement. "Or perhaps... you’ve made another breakthrough in optimizing the Basic Ether Gathering Technique?"

At those words, everyone began to look at each other, thinking that the announcement Veradine planned on telling them might just be related to it.

After all, over a few years ago, she had announced that she had pushed the Basic Ether Gathering Technique only after disappearing from the lab for a couple of weeks.

And since that amount of time was enough to push the enhancement brought by the optimizations from 40% to 80%, wouldn’t that mean that the Basic Ether Gathering Technique was pushed even further than that in the past half year.

Seeing the looks of expectation and excitement that appeared on everyone’s faces at that moment, Veradine swept her gaze over everyone for a second as she tried to understand what was going on in their heads.

Once she did, she could not help but let out a faint sigh.

"Just because I was able to improve the efficacy of the Basic Ether Gathering Technique by 40% in two weeks back then doesn’t mean it scales accordingly," she said, shaking her head as she let out a light chuckle.

Hearing that, most of the people’s expectations began to die down, reminding themselves that just because it happened in the past doesn’t mean that it was guaranteed to happen again.

However, before they even got the chance to imprint that thought in their heads, Veradine immediately followed up with her next set of words.

"But of course, since I was away from the lab for half a year, it should come as no surprise that I’ve made great strides in improving the Basic Ether Gathering Technique."

Silence.

For a while after that, a deafening silence spread throughout the entire lab as everyone began to look at her with various emotions on their faces.

Some of them showed obvious surprise, while others showed great curiosity.

A few showed a hint of expectation on their faces, while the remaining ones showed great excitement for what was to come.

"If we could know, Professor..." Mustering up her courage, the Scholar from earlier decided to break the silence. "How... how far did you improve the technique?"

"Let’s see..." Veradine closed her eyes as she pondered over the question for a bit. "If the last article we’ve published pushes the Basic Ether Gathering Technique to Pseudo-Class C level..."

"Then, with the data I’ve gathered over the past half year, we can push the technique to... Peak-grade Class C level."

"..."

Once again, silence enveloped the entire lab the moment Veradine was done speaking.

However, unlike before, where no one dared to break the tense silence within the lab, almost everyone immediately uttered out words that embodied what they felt about the matter.

"Peak... Class C..."

"Holy..."

"Peak-grade Class C... Peak-grade Class C!"

"Holy shit! Are you serious, Professor?"

"Peak-grade Class C! You’ve basically doubled the efficacy of the previous technique, Professor!"

Listening to the words that left everyone’s mouths at that moment, a faint smile appeared on Veradine’s face as she felt immense satisfaction at the sight.

Though, at the same time, she could not help but feel amused.

After all, she had improved the Basic Ether Gathering Technique to 160% efficacy over four years ago.

The fact that she was only bringing it out now, especially with how far she had pushed the technique throughout the years, made the entire thing feel somewhat ironic.

Then again, if they knew that she had already pushed the technique to its limit and used it as a foundation to create three High-grade Class A techniques in a row...

Perhaps their minds would have long turned into mush.

"Though I wasn’t expecting to announce it this way, the next article is indeed going to focus on the further improvements I’ve made to the technique," said Veradine, forcing everyone to pay attention to her words. "Combined with the results of this upcoming article, I’m sure everyone already has an idea of what the article afterwards would be."

Everyone nodded.

"However, that’s not the only thing I wanted to announce," she continued, a faint smile appearing on the edge of her lips. "I also wanted to announce that the optimized versions of the Basic Ether Gathering Technique shall be given to everyone here in the lab as a way of saying thanks."

As these words left her mouth, Veradine expected everyone to burst out into cheers and screams once more, just like how they did when they heard that she had improved the Basic Ether Gathering Technique further.

Yet, contrary to her expectations, almost everyone in the lab looked at her in silence, their expressions a mix of shock and disbelief.

’Uh oh,’ she thought in response to the sight.

’Did I... did I do something wrong?’

Finally sitting on her office chair after what felt like a long time, Veradine could not help but let out a long sigh of relief as she thought about what happened earlier.

After telling everyone in the lab that she planned to give everyone a copy of the optimized Basic Ether Gathering Technique, everyone began to look at her as if she had gone crazy.

Thankfully, someone mustered up the courage to ask her about it after some time, asking if she was really serious about it.

With that, she soon found out that almost everyone in the lab was still using the Basic Ether Gathering Technique, with only a select few among them having swapped to a better Ether Gathering Technique.

But even then, their Ether Gathering Techniques weren’t all that much better in comparison, with the best ones among them somewhat close to the level of a Pseudo-Class D technique.

On the other hand, the first version of the optimized Basic Ether Gathering Technique was already on par with a Low-grade Class D technique.

Though realizing this made her think twice about going through with the decision, Veradine eventually decided to go with it and give them the technique.

But not for now.

"It would be a good idea to set up a contribution system for it," muttered Veradine to herself as the gears in her mind spun.

"Probably something along the lines of having the first optimized technique being everyone that works in the lab gets, then after saving up enough contribution points, one could then upgrade the technique to a more optimized version."

"Hmm... not a bad idea. But of course, I should run it through the others first before implementing it."

"..."

"Well, since everyone else is still busy celebrating on my behalf, I’ll just bring the topic up at a better time."

"For now, I guess I’ll just thinking about some avenues I could explore while I approach making my own technique."

"Surprisingly, what they said earlier gave me some ideas that I want to try out."
