Chapter 1150: The Gateway
Chapter 1150: The Gateway
Three days passed.
Three days of following the endless migration of the stingrays through the Soul Sea.
By now, the expedition had abandoned any notion of haste. The vessel simply drifted behind the enormous school while every waking moment was devoted to understanding the ancient inscriptions spread across their backs.
Every race contributed in its own way.
Meanwhile the warriors protected everyone else.
Native Soul Sea beasts attacked almost daily. Some emerged from beneath the vessel, others descended from the strange storms drifting across the ocean, while a few appeared from tears in space itself. None of them survived for long. By unspoken agreement, the scholars were never interrupted unless absolutely necessary. Every attack was intercepted before it came anywhere near those attempting to decipher the stingrays.
I scarcely noticed any of it.
For those three days, my world consisted of nothing except glowing runes.
Right to Insight remained active almost continuously, reducing countless years of analysis into mere hours. The ability didn’t simply allow me to see the inscriptions. It revealed the relationship between them, the intention behind every symbol and the logic binding them together. What had initially appeared to be millions of unrelated markings slowly transformed into an elegant structure whose complexity surpassed anything I had ever imagined.
It wasn’t merely a summoning circle.
It was...a conversation.
Every rune represented a question.
Every movement of the stingrays represented an answer.
Only when every question had been answered correctly did the complete circle reveal itself.
On the morning of the fourth day, I finally opened my eyes.
A long breath escaped my lips.
"...I’ve got it."
The words weren’t loud.
Yet they spread through the vessel almost instantly.
Within moments, everyone had gathered around me.
Gerald arrived first.
"You figured it out?"
I nodded.
"The complete formation."
For several seconds nobody spoke. Then Gerald laughed.
"I knew bringing you was the correct decision."
Sue smiled gracefully.
"So..Where do we cast it?"
I looked toward the endless Soul Sea surrounding us.
"Here."
Several expressions became puzzled.
"The location itself doesn’t matter."
I slowly looked toward the hundreds of stingrays still swimming beneath the vessel.
"They were never guiding us toward the gate. They were carrying the gate."
Silence immediately followed.
"The runic formation hidden across their bodies acts as a key."
I extended one hand toward the sea below.
"The moment the complete sequence is reconstructed....the gate answers."
Gerald slowly nodded to himself.
"Elegant. Very elegant."
Then I continued.
"There is one problem."
Every smile disappeared.
"The gate remains open for only ten seconds."
Nobody reacted immediately. Perhaps because they hadn’t fully processed what I had just said.
Then Kaelra blinked.
"...Ten?"
I nodded.
"Ten."
"The moment the gate appears, it immediately begins collapsing. We have exactly ten seconds to cross before it seals itself again."
Gerald rubbed his forehead.
"Well..."
He sighed.
"That certainly sounds like something the Ruler of the Null Realm would do."
Sue quietly folded her arms.
"So there won’t be a second attempt."
"There won’t."
I looked around at everyone aboard the vessel.
"When I activate the formation, nobody hesitates."
No one questioned me.
They simply nodded. The expedition had already come too far to fear ten seconds. I slowly stepped away from the others until I stood alone above the Soul Sea.
The ocean stretched endlessly beneath me while the enormous school of stingrays continued swimming peacefully below, completely unaware that they had carried the key to one of the greatest mysteries in the history of the Null Realm.
I raised both hands.
The runes engraved within my memory awakened.
One by one...
Violet and silver symbols appeared before me. Millions of them.
Every rune floated silently in the air, illuminating the dark sky like an endless river of ancient stars. The expedition watched without speaking as the symbols continuously multiplied, each taking its designated place with perfect precision before another emerged to continue the pattern.
The process seemed almost alive.
The runes rotated around one another, merged, separated and reassembled countless times until gradually they began forming an enormous circle hundreds of meters across.
Every inscription occupied exactly the position intended by its creator countless ages ago.
The completed formation hovered above the Soul Sea, radiating an authority so old that even the surrounding currents instinctively retreated from beneath it.
Then...
Before activating it...
I extended my left hand.
A crimson summoning circle erupted beside me.
Its appearance immediately drew everyone’s attention.
The circle expanded rapidly before my summons stepped out one after another.
Only one was absent. The Saint-ranked Eternal remained behind.
The silence aboard the vessel deepened.
Kaelra slowly looked from Knight...
...to Ragnar...
...then toward Lyret.
Her golden eyes widened.
"...Who exactly....are they?"
I smiled.
"They’re with me."
That was all. I offered no further explanation.
The others remained equally speechless.
Aelion’s gaze lingered upon Lyrate longer than anyone else.
Something about the elf clearly unsettled him.
The Dragon representatives, meanwhile, openly stared at Knight and Ragnar, their expressions carrying unmistakable curiosity. Whatever blood flowed through those two...
Even Sue’s ticking eyes had quietly accelerated once more.
The expedition had spent a week learning about me.
Yet somehow... I continued revealing things they hadn’t anticipated.
Satisfied that everyone was present, I slowly turned back toward the colossal runic formation hanging above the Soul Sea.
I took one final breath.
"Let’s not delay any longer."
My hand gently descended. The millions of runes illuminated simultaneously.
No thunder echoed across the heavens. No pillar of light pierced the sky.
The formation simply...disappeared. Like the reflection of a mirage fading beneath the summer sun.
And in the exact place where it had hovered moments before...
Something else silently took its place.
A doorway.
Standing alone upon the surface of the Soul Sea as though it had always been there, waiting patiently for someone capable of remembering the spell that called it home.
I lowered my hand toward the ancient doorway.
It stood nearly three hundred feet tall, carved from weathered grey stone that looked older than time itself. There wasn’t the slightest trace of moss, cracks or decay upon its surface, only countless intricate engravings that covered every inch of the colossal structure. At first glance they appeared to be ordinary carvings, but the longer I looked, the more they seemed to move.
Entire rivers flowed across the face of the gate.
Not rivers of water.
Rivers of luminous Soul Force that wound through mountains, crossed endless oceans and poured from one world into another as though connecting countless realities together. Ancient civilizations were etched along their banks, while enormous beasts, forgotten races and celestial bodies drifted silently within the stone. Every engraving told part of a story, yet none possessed a beginning or an end. They all merged into one another, depicting an endless current flowing through existence itself.
The gate carried no pressure.
Only an indescribable sense of age.
It felt less like something that had been constructed and more like a natural law that had existed since the birth of creation.
Without another word, I stepped forward.
The weathered stone rippled like the calm surface of a lake as my body passed through it. Behind me, the others followed immediately, one after another, disappearing into the ancient gateway before the ten precious seconds slipped away forever.
