Chapter 1285: Theras’s Plan 1
Chapter 1285: Theras’s Plan 1
"That’s correct." Amun’s expression became more serious. "Almost three years have passed since you left the battlefield. During the first year, we still faced occasional incursions from their side, but those gradually stopped. Since then, the Eternals have completely withdrawn their forces, and as of this moment, there are no active rifts leading into the Prime Universe, no Eternal armies occupying our territories, and no Phantoms or Abominations left wandering through our space. We hunted them all down."
I listened carefully as he continued explaining the aftermath of the counteroffensive. The remaining hostile Demi-Gods had been eliminated or forced to retreat, and the captured Eternals had been handed over to the System. The Prime Universe was now completely free of enemy forces, something that had seemed impossible only a few years earlier.
"Wait," I interrupted. "Why have you been handing the captured Eternals over to the System?"
Amun smiled knowingly, the sort of smile that immediately told me he was deliberately withholding information.
"I’ll explain that later."
I narrowed my eyes at him, but he merely chuckled and continued before I could press him further.
"As for the Eternals, they haven’t disappeared. They have withdrawn into their own territories and begun preparing for something. Whatever they are doing, it has been important enough for Theras to stop sending forces toward the Prime Universe, even after losing so many Demi-Gods."
"What exactly are they preparing for?"
Amun’s expression changed. He looked toward the distant void, where the crimson chains surrounding him continued to extend into the darkness.
"Then you should know that he has been pursuing the same goal for longer than most beings in this universe can comprehend. He has spent countless years trying to break through the final boundary of the Demi-God realm, and now, after all this time, he is preparing to take his final step."
He turned back toward me, his eyes carrying a weight that I had rarely seen before.
"Theras is preparing to become a God."
That came as a shock to me. To become god. The words were simple but the meaning behind them was not. I quickly asked the question that mattered the most to me.
"How does he intend to become a God? Even after reaching the peak of the Demi-God realm, breaking through that final boundary should not be as simple as accumulating more power."
"You’re right," Amun replied, his expression growing solemn. "No amount of power alone can carry someone across that boundary. To become a God, one must achieve complete resonance with an Origin, reaching one hundred percent, and then establish a personal Path through which that Origin can be expressed. Only then can the transformation take place, allowing a being to step beyond the limits of a Demi-God and enter a realm that no longer follows the same rules."
He paused briefly before continuing, his gaze fixed on the distant darkness.
"Theras has been pursuing that goal for longer than I can properly explain, but the Origin he chose or perhaps the Origin that chose him—is unlike anything we understood when we were younger. In the beginning, I comprehended Order, while Theras walked the path of Chaos. Those were the foundations of our power, and neither of us had any reason to believe our paths would change so drastically. Yet, somewhere along the way, Theras acquired another Origin: Fate."
"Fate?" I repeated, surprised by the revelation. I had encountered countless Origins during my journey, and I now held resonance with forty-nine of them, but even with my current understanding, the idea of an Origin that could govern the fate of other beings was difficult to grasp fully.
Amun nodded.
"I still don’t know where he found it or how he managed to establish resonance with it. Fate is mysterious, elusive, and far more difficult to understand than most Origins.
It does not behave like the elements or even concepts such as Space and Time, whose manifestations can be observed and whose structures can gradually be comprehended.
Fate reaches into the existence of living beings, intertwining with their choices, their experiences, and the paths they might follow. Theras managed to reach ninety-nine percent resonance with it, but that final one percent has remained beyond his grasp despite all the time he has spent pursuing it."
His expression hardened as he turned toward me. "And that is where his plan began."
I waited for him to continue, already sensing that whatever came next would explain how the war that had engulfed the universes started.
"Long before the present war began, Theras realized that he could not force Fate to yield through comprehension alone. He had reached the limit of what he could achieve by studying the Origin, and no amount of meditation or accumulated Essence could carry him beyond ninety-nine percent.
So he searched for another way, something that would allow him to overcome the final boundary without relying on his own understanding.
Eventually, he arrived at a solution that was as terrible as it was ingenious: if he could not complete his resonance with Fate through himself, he would consume the fates of other beings and use them to force his way to one hundred percent."
Amun’s crimson chains shifted in the void, their distant lengths glowing faintly as they stretched around the galaxies he had bound.
"The Eternals you see today were once humans, just like you and me, although they belonged to my original universe and the Seven Realms. Back then, we used the System to help humans grow stronger, improve their control over their power, and advance through the stages of cultivation. It was meant to be a tool for growth, something that could help our people reach heights they might never have achieved on their own."
His voice grew colder.
"But Theras saw another use for it. He modified the System, secretly connecting everyone who possessed it to himself through his resonance with Fate. The connection was woven into their existence so carefully that they could live, grow stronger, and pursue their ambitions without ever realizing that a part of their fate was no longer beyond his reach.
Whenever he wished, he could draw upon those connections and devour the fates of the people bound to him, turning their existence into fuel for his own advancement."
I thought back to the Eternals I had encountered throughout the war, recalling their strange nature and the absolute devotion they displayed toward their race. Something about Amun’s explanation did not fit with what I had observed, however, and I raised the obvious question.
"But the Eternals don’t have a System like the one in the Prime Universe. There are no interfaces, no visible status panels, and no notifications guiding their advancement. If the System is responsible for connecting them to Theras, how can that connection still exist?"
