Chapter 693: Beautiful And Scary At The Same Time
Chapter 693: Beautiful And Scary At The Same Time
The transition from Earth’s atmosphere to the cold silence of space happened so fast that if you blinked, you would have missed it entirely.
Inside the command bridge of the Titanium Eagle, there was no violent shaking, no deafening roar of rocket fuel, and no agonizing g-force pinning anyone to their seats. The ship’s localized gravitational dampeners simply neutralized the acceleration.
One moment, the group was looking out at the turquoise waters of the South Pacific; seconds later, the sky turned from tropical blue to deep violet, and then to the pitch-black velvet of outer space, studded with millions of unblinking stars.
"Whoa..." Alex breathed, stepping up to the forward viewport. "Guys... look down."
Below them, planet Earth floated like a radiant blue marble, swirling with white storm clouds and glowing atmosphere.
"Even though this is actually the second time we are in space after our previous well long trip, it still feels so surreal," Stacy whispered, her hands pressed against the polarized viewport, her eyes reflecting the curvature of the world below.
"I also can’t get used to it," Matt grinned, his hands resting lightly on the floating holographic controls. "I remember when we flew here in just our exosuit but didn’t dare to go beyond Earth’s orbit."
"You can’t exactly blame us. The scene was beautiful and scary at the same time. All we saw around us was nothing but the blackness of space. The thought of getting lost was something I couldn’t allow to happen in reality," Kristopher said with a small smile.
"Wasn’t that why we all held hands? The girls nearly wet themselves and wer blaming us for convincing them to go on a suicide run," Alex chuckled.
"Alex!" Lana exclaimed as his words reminded her and the other girls of that particularly embarrassing moment.
The boys smiled proudly thinking about that particular scene. It was a moment that reminded them of just how vastly they are Liam.
"Alright, crew. We’ve got clear skies and zero air traffic. Where are we heading first?" Matt said.
"Lagrange 5!" Harper shouted immediately from the co-pilot’s seat. "Take us to the megastructure! I want to see this fifty-five-kilometer monster in person before any other person on Earth!"
"You heard the man," Matt chuckled. He tapped the holographic navigation ring. "Target set: Earth-Moon Lagrange 5 Point. Engagement speed: sub-light cruising velocity. Let’s go."
With a soft, melodic chime from the ship’s AI, the Titanium Eagle pitched slightly and surged forward.
Instead of taking days or hours to bridge the 384,000-kilometer gap between Earth and the Lagrange point, the starship’s sub-light FTL impulse engines warped the distance into a casual fifteen-minute joyride.
As they glided through the void, Yanxia leaned against the doorway of the bridge, a faint, amused smirk playing on her lips as she watched the group take selfies, record 64K footage on their Lucid devices, and marvel at the Earth shrinking behind them.
"So, Yanxia," Kristopher asked, turning to her with a grin, "how does this compare to flying under your own power?"
"It’s comfortable," Yanxia admitted smoothly.
"Fair enough," Kristopher laughed at Yanxia’s blunt response.
Suddenly, the ship’s AI chimed softly again.
"Approaching Earth-Moon Lagrange 5. Decelerating to station proximity speed."
The blackness ahead of them seemed to shift. At first, it looked like a faint, glowing silver thread stretched across the stars. But as the Titanium Eagle closed the distance, the sheer, mind-boggling scale of the Nova Technologies Space Station materialized right before their eyes.
The entire group went dead silent. The banter, the jokes, the laughter—all of it evaporated.
Spanning fifty-five kilometers long and twenty-seven point five kilometers wide, the station wasn’t just a structure; it was a floating titanium metropolis anchored in the void.
The central spine of the station—a massive, dark matte-black chassis forged from lunar alloy—was fully locked in place. Surrounding it, thousands of glowing construction drones were putting the finishing touches on the colossal glass-composite domes that housed the Agricultural, Residential, and Commercial Districts.
Inside the transparent domes, bathed in simulated sunlight generated by internal fusion rings, they could see engineered green parks, winding rivers, multi-tiered commercial complexes, and pristine residential towers.
"It’s... it’s huge," Elise stammered, her voice barely a whisper. "You can read about fifty-five kilometers on a screen all day long, but standing—well, flying—next to it? It looks like someone parked a flying Manhattan in orbit!"
"Look at the docking district!" Matt pointed toward the front of the station. "That’s where the hired crew will be arriving soon."
"To think that people are going to live, work, eat, and sleep inside that thing," Alex said, shaking his head in absolute awe. "Line cooks, nurses, bartenders, scientists... living 384,000 kilometers from Earth in pure luxury."
"And Liam built all of this," Harper said quietly, looking out at the sprawling titanium titan with deep respect. "While the world’s governments were arguing over budgets and political propaganda, he built an off-world sanctuary for humanity."
Matt took a deep breath, soaking in the view of the station glowing against the backdrop of the turning Earth and the distant Moon.
"Alright," Matt said, a bright, adventurous grin returning to his face as he adjusted the flight stick. "We’ve seen the future of human living. Who’s up for a quick flyby past the Moon and maybe even Mars before we head back to the island for dinner?"
"Heck yes!" the whole group shouted in unison.
With a smooth tilt of its vector wings, the Titanium Eagle banked away from the Lagrange 5 station, carving a silent, brilliant arc of light toward the far side of the Moon, leaving the floating space city behind as a promise of the world to come.
The space shuttle accelerated effortlessly away from the Lagrange 5 point. Its sub-light pulse engines hummed with a quiet, resonant vibration as the Earth and the newly forged megastructure shrank into brilliant crescents in the aft viewport.
"Next stop: the far side," Matt announced, his hands gliding smoothly over the holographic interface.
Within minutes, the stark, cratered terrain of the Moon rushed forward to meet them. The stark white dust and desolate gray highlands of the lunar near side swept beneath the ship’s underbelly like a desolate desert of crushed glass.
But as Matt brought the ship around the lunar curve, the terrain beneath transformed dramatically and a massive shadow completely cast of over them.
They all looked up and they saw that familiar massive Starship, Voyager, hovering in the moon’s orbit. And next to it was an almost similar looking Starship of far more outrageous size, hanging close to the Voyager.
"Lucy has completed construction on the Emperor Class-II Starship?!" Alex exclaimed immediately when he saw the massive spacecraft.
