Chapter 717: Maya Abduction
Chapter 717: Maya Abduction
"Everyone, get ready. We’re approaching the asset’s compound. As we discussed, we’ll take the back door and move in. The guards on duty have already been taken care of. Our asset will be in the room with her mother. I’m sure everyone understands their roles and what is demanded of them, right?" A man in full black combat gear spoke.
"Yes, boss," the four men and two women in the same outfit said.
"Good. Let’s do this fast. Let’s not raise unnecessary alarms. By the time they realize what’s going on, we’ll already be far from the country. Remember, no harm must come to the asset. Even if she struggles, you must be gentle with her. She’s of extraordinary value," the man said.
"But boss, do you think this is actually going to work? This is the first physical move anyone’s making related to Nova Technologies. Are you sure we aren’t going to be used as an example by such a powerful entity?" one of the ladies asked.
"I understand that Nova Technologies is an extremely powerful and technologically advanced company. But at the end of the day, they’re a company. And besides, we operate in a jurisdiction they have to tread carefully in," the man said.
"...Whatever you say, boss," the lady said. She wanted to argue more but she was aware that she’d be killing the morale of the team.
And honestly, the money she was being paid was a lot. Seven million dollars just to successfully abduct a target, even though it’s a little girl, is an amount one can’t pass like that.
Still, she knew that this was a very risky job. And even though the risk of dying is low, just the thought of getting on the bad side of an entity like Nova Technologies instilled fear into her. But she was already deep in the mess to want out.
The van pulled to a stop by the side of the compound and the boss put on his mask. He signaled for them all to step out as he opened the door.
They stepped onto the dirt road. The night was dark and quiet. No lights shone from the target house or the surrounding buildings. It was past midnight, so everyone was in deep sleep. The air felt cold against their exposed skin. The boss raised his hand and gave the signal to move.
Two men walked toward the front gate to secure the street. The rest of the team headed for the back wall. They found two local guards lying on the grass outside the perimeter. The guards were unconscious.
The boss checked their pulses and nodded to his team. He grabbed the top of the concrete wall and pulled his body up. He swung his legs over and dropped into the yard. The others climbed over and landed next to him on the soft grass.
They moved across the lawn in complete silence. They kept their weapons lowered but ready to fire. They reached the back door of the house.
One of the men took a set of metal tools from his pocket. He inserted a pick into the keyhole. He twisted his wrist twice and the lock clicked open. He turned the handle and pushed the door inward.
The team stepped into the kitchen. The only sound was that of the refrigerator. The boss activated his night vision goggles. The room appeared in a bright green hue. He scanned the area and found it empty.
He raised two fingers and pointed toward the hallway. The team moved out of the kitchen in a single file line. They walked through the living room and checked behind the couches. They found no one awake.
They approached the wooden staircase. The boss went up first. He placed his feet on the edges of the steps to prevent the wood from creaking.
The team followed his exact movements. They reached the second floor without making a sound. There were three doors in the hallway. The boss pointed to the door at the very end of the hall.
They walked down the corridor. They stopped outside the bedroom. The boss grabbed the door handle. He turned it and pushed the door open. He stepped into the room and raised his weapon. The other members flooded in behind him and secured the corners of the room.
The room was completely still. A large bed sat in the center. Two figures lay under a thick blanket. The mother and the daughter slept deeply in the same bed. Their breathing was steady. The moonlight filtered through the window curtains and cast long shadows across the floor.
The boss signaled the woman who had spoken in the van. She walked over to the right side of the bed. She pulled a small syringe from a pouch on her chest. She removed the plastic cap with her thumb, leaned down and pressed the needle into the mother’s exposed shoulder.
She pushed the plunger down and injected the liquid. The mother didn’t wake up and her breathing slowed down even further. The chemical compound put her into a deep state of unconsciousness. She wouldn’t wake up for several more hours.
The boss moved to the left side of the bed. Maya lay curled up on her side. Her face was relaxed in sleep. The boss reached out and pulled the blanket back. He placed his gloved hand over her mouth.
Maya shifted in her sleep. Her eyes fluttered open. Before she could process what was happening, the boss pressed a small auto-injector against her arm. The device clicked. The mild sedative entered her bloodstream right away. Her eyes rolled back, and she went limp in his arms.
He picked the girl up and held her against his chest. She was completely unresponsive. He nodded to the team. They turned around and walked out of the bedroom. They left the mother sleeping in the bed.
They moved down the hallway and descended the stairs. They walked through the living room and the kitchen. They stepped out the back door and closed it behind them.
The team crossed the grass and reached the concrete wall. One of the men climbed over first. He reached down and took Maya from the boss. The boss climbed over the wall and took the girl back. The rest of the team scaled the barrier and dropped onto the dirt road. They walked to the waiting van.
The driver opened the side door. The boss laid Maya on a padded bench in the back. He strapped a seatbelt across her chest. The team climbed inside and closed the doors. The driver started the engine. The van pulled away from the compound and drove down the empty street.
High above the neighborhood, two figures floated in the dark sky. Lucy and Yanxia looked down at the moving vehicle. The cold wind blew past them, but neither of them shivered. They hovered in total silence.
Yanxia crossed her arms over her chest. "They took the girl."
"Nothing will happen to her," Lucy said. "I’m monitoring her vital signs through the nanites. I’m tracking the shadow money and the people who hired this team. We’ll dismantle their entire operation from the top down."
Yanxia uncrossed her arms and let them hang by her sides. "I prefer to handle things directly. Waiting and watching is not my preferred method."
"Patience yields better results," Lucy stated. "If we killed those mercenaries at the compound, the people who hired them would just hire a different team next week. We must remove the root of the problem."
The van drove onto a larger road and picked up speed. It blended in with the scarce nighttime traffic.
The mercenaries believed they’d executed a perfect operation. They thought they’d outsmarted a global superpower.
The two figures remained in the sky for a few more moments. They watched the van drive further away from the city limits. Then they turned in the air and flew after the vehicle and they followed the kidnappers into the night.
