Chapter 718: Exposing The Groups Behind It
The group drove down the uneven dirt road in their armored van, feeling the suspension creak every time the tires hit the deep potholes. The glowing city lights of Guatemala faded behind them as they entered the dense countryside.
Tall trees flanked the road on both sides, forcing the driver to navigate the narrow path with the headlights turned off. He relied on his night vision goggles to see the obstacles ahead.
After a few miles, they approached a small airstrip hidden between the hills. A twin-engine airplane sat waiting on the cracked tarmac with its engines already running. The propellers spun fast, creating a loud hum that echoed through the trees. The van pulled to a stop just a few meters away from the aircraft.
The side door of the van slid open, and the leader stepped out first with an assault rifle held against his chest. He scanned the perimeter and checked the tree line for any signs of movement. Two other men stepped out of the van right after him.
One of the men carried Maya over his broad shoulder, holding her secure. Maya remained unconscious. Her arms dangled limp by her sides with the motion of his steps. Two women stepped out of the van next, both wearing dark tactical gear. They hurried toward the waiting airplane.
The pilot noticed their approach and lowered the metal stairs for them. They climbed aboard the aircraft one by one, filling the small cabin. The leader entered last, pulled the stairs up, and secured the cabin door behind him. A minute later, the plane rolled down the runway, gathered speed, and lifted into the night sky.
Ten minutes after they had left, the abandoned van sat alone on the empty tarmac. A small explosive charge ignited near the fuel tank and 5he van exploded into a massive ball of fire, sending a shockwave that rattled the surrounding trees. The flames consumed the vehicle, destroying all the evidence and leaving nothing but burning metal behind.
Inside the aircraft cabin, the mercenaries settled into the comfortable leather seats and unbuckled their heavy tactical vests.
They placed their weapons on the floor beneath their feet and let the tension leave their muscles. They stretched their legs out in the aisle, realizing that the hardest part of the job was over.
They had worried about the extraction phase, knowing that snatching the girl from a secure location was dangerous. They had actually expected that something would go wrong the moment they grabbed her, but they met zero resistance. Everything was proceeding according to their plan.
The leader unbuttoned his collar and looked at the woman sitting across from him. "How’s the girl’s pulse?" he asked.
The woman leaned over Maya and checked the small medical monitor strapped to the girl’s wrist. She then pressed two fingers against Maya’s neck to verify the readings. "She’s in good condition," the woman replied. "Her vitals are stable, and her breathing is normal."
One of the men leaned forward in his seat and pointed a finger at Maya’s arm. "What about those nanites in her body? I thought the drug won’t work on her."
The woman shook her head in dismissal. "The nanites might have noticed the foreign substance when I injected it, but considering that the drug isn’t harmful, it probably didn’t react. It just induces deep sleep, and since the chemical doesn’t pose a threat to her life functions, the nanites probably let it pass."
The man rubbed his chin in thought. "Then we have nothing to worry about?" he asked.
The woman leaned back against her seat and closed her eyes. "We don’t. She will stay asleep until we deliver her to the client."
The group nodded and exhaled long breaths of relief. They smiled at each other, knowing the girl was worth $46M. They can’t allow anything to happen to her, or their big break would slip from their hands. If they pulled this off, they would never have to work another job. The money would set them up for life.
The airplane flew through the night. After about half an hour of flying, the plane left Guatemala airspace and finally started heading toward their main destination over the open ocean.
Less than an hour later, the aircraft began approaching and descending toward an island densely filled with trees. A paved runway cut straight through the center of the forest. The pilot deployed the landing gear, and the tires touched down on the tarmac with a loud screech. The plane rolled toward a large concrete facility and came to a stop.
The cabin door opened, and the leader pushed the stairs out. On the ground, a medical team was already waiting for them. Three nurses in scrubs and a doctor stood next to a rolling metal stretcher.
Immediately after the group brought Maya out of the plane, the large man carried her down the stairs and placed her on the stretcher. The nurses strapped her down and wheeled her toward the facility entrance. The heavy metal doors slid open, and they pushed her inside.
A man in a gray suit walked out of the building and stopped in front of the mercenaries. He checked a digital tablet in his hand. "Thank you for the good work, gentlemen. Your compensation has been forwarded to your accounts. I will be taking my leave now. I have a medical breakthrough to watch," the man said, then turned around and walked back into the facility.
"What a cunt," one of the men said. But the moment his phone beeped in his pocket, a wide smile bloomed on his face. He pulled the device out to verify the incoming transaction.
He showed the bright screen to the others, confirming the money had arrived in their offshore accounts. The rest of the group smiled and clapped each other on the back.
They climbed back into the airplane, and the pilot started the engines. The plane took off a minute later with the group in it, flying over the ocean and disappearing into the clouds.

High above in the atmosphere, Yanxia and Lucy hovered in the sky. They looked down at the island, watching the airplane that was now flying away.
"You’re letting them go?" Yanxia asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
"There’s no value in going after them. Let them enjoy the feeling for the moment. Despair will follow next," Lucy replied, keeping her eyes on the island below.
"Then, what about those people?" Yanxia asked, pointing a finger at the concrete facility hidden in the trees.
"Where is the girl?" Lucy asked in response.
Yanxia closed her eyes for a second and scanned the island. "They are in someplace I don’t understand, but they have strapped her to a big table or something. It looks like an underground bunker, and they are attaching wires to her head."
"Bring her out," Lucy said, stretching her hand forward.
Yanxia simply snapped her fingers.
Deep underground, the doctors and guards had gathered around the metal table where Maya lay. Then, Maya vanished from the table she was in inside the facility. The scene shocked the nurses, doctors, and guards in the room, but they weren’t able to react. They all froze in place like time was frozen, unable to move or make a sound.
Maya appeared in Yanxia’s hands, and she passed the sleeping girl to her side. A man in a suit stepped out of the darkness of the night sky and collected her. He gave a polite bow and stepped back in, vanishing.
"Anything else?" Yanxia asked, looking down at the facility.
"You’re enjoying this a bit too much," Lucy smiled.
"It’s much tamer than I would want, but I’m looking forward to what we are going to do with them. I’m thinking scorched earth. We can burn the whole island down," Yanxia said.
"You know that I can’t kill humans, right? And I can’t take a decision that directly will lead to their death. It’s the only restriction Master put on me. And you can’t do that too," Lucy said, shaking her head.
"Then, what do we do to them?" Yanxia asked in surprise and disappointment, dropping her hands to her sides.
"Don’t worry. By this time tomorrow, they all will be in the mud," Lucy replied.
Yanxia and Lucy disappeared from above the sky, leaving no trace behind.
But the morning was just beginning for the country of Guatemala and the whole world. People woke up and started their daily routines, pouring their coffee and checking their phones. Without warning, Nova Technologies dropped an hour-long video across all major platforms.
At first, people were confused because Nova Technologies had never dropped a video before, talk more of an unannounced hours long video. But curiosity took over, and millions of people clicked the play button.
As people watched, their initial confusion turned into shock. They saw the footage and heard the conversations. Most people were shocked by the facts presented, but when they kept watching, rage started burning in their chests.
People stopped walking on the streets and stared at their devices. The contents of the video revealed secrets that were supposed to stay hidden forever, exposing a level of corruption that demanded immediate justice.
At the exact same moment the video was posted, the President of the United States sat behind her large desk in the Oval Office. A notification chimed from her secure terminal, bypassing all government firewalls and military encryption to land directly in her personal inbox.
She leaned forward and read the text.
"I believe you know what to do," the message read.
She stared at the words, understanding the implication and the source. She closed her eyes for a moment in defeat, knowing that the old rules no longer applied against Nova Technologies.
She regained herself, opened her eyes, and reached her hand across the desk. She was about to pick up the intercom to call her staff, but it rang on its own.
The loud buzz echoed in the quiet room. Then, the next moment, the heavy door opened, and Calloway walked in.
