Chapter 1730 A Different Bite
Chapter 1730 A Different Bite
Midwak paid the new intruder little attention.
All he knew was that, for now at least, the man seemed to be on the same side as him. That was enough. Anything beyond that could wait. Right now, Midwak had far more important things to deal with.
His focus was locked on Rex.
The two of them had gone head-to-head, their hands clenched tightly against each other’s, claws digging in as they struggled in a pure contest of strength. Muscles bulged, veins standing out as the ground beneath their feet cracked under the pressure.
Rex growled, trying to force Midwak back. Midwak didn’t move an inch. In the end, the difference between them became clear.
With a powerful surge of strength, Midwak crushed his opponent’s hand, forcing Rex down onto his knees. There was a sharp crack as bones gave way under the pressure. Before Rex could even react, Midwak twisted his arm sharply.
With his other clawed hand, Midwak slashed downward. The cut was clean.
Rex’s arm was severed at the elbow, blood spraying outward as Midwak lifted the limb into the air. For a brief moment, he simply held it there, like some sort of twisted trophy.
Rex screamed.
Without hesitation, Midwak swung the severed arm and slammed it straight into Rex’s face. Once. Twice. Again and again. He struck him from side to side, each hit crushing flesh and bone until Rex’s face was swollen, bruised, and unrecognizable.
“Yikes,” Churk muttered, having finished off the remaining members of the Raptor group. He stared at the scene in front of him. “Imagine getting taken down by your own limb. Literally.”
There was no coming back from this.
Rex could no longer move. His body twitched weakly, life already fading as Midwak showed next to no mercy, finishing him off completely.
“Hey!” Midwak called out, finally turning his head toward Churk. “Don’t even think about taking them away. These are mine.”
Before Churk could even ask what he meant by that, his stomach twisted. Midwak lowered his head and began chomping down on Rex’s body.
Teeth tore through flesh effortlessly. Bones cracked as his jaws crushed them, swallowing pieces whole without hesitation. Blood coated his mouth as he ate, completely unconcerned with the fact that someone was watching.
Churk nearly threw up.
He had to clench his jaw tightly just to keep his stomach from emptying itself onto the ground. He had heard stories of vicious Altered before, but this was the first time he had seen someone devour their prey so casually, right in front of him, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
If the man hadn’t been wearing the black and gold uniform of the Howlers, Churk would have tried everything he could to get away. This man reeked of danger.
Of something far worse.
After finishing off one body, Midwak moved on without hesitation. He went to the next fallen Altered, tearing into them as well, as if determined not to waste a single bite.
Only when there was nothing left did he finally stop. Midwak wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and turned to the side. That was when he noticed something that surprised him.
Churk was still standing there.
“You didn’t leave?” Midwak asked, his tone flat.
Churk swallowed, then nodded. “Sorry. Let me introduce myself. I’m Churk. You’re from the Howlers, right?”
“I am,” Midwak replied. Then he paused and glanced down at his uniform. “How do you know that?”
Even as he asked, he realized it was a stupid question.
“There were rumors that Centrefield was being taken over by the Howlers,” Churk explained carefully. “We were informed by some of the ex–White Rose members still around. I didn’t think it was true… not until I saw what you did just now.”
His voice remained cautious.
After all, no matter how many good things people said about the Howlers, they were still gangsters. And after witnessing Midwak’s brutality firsthand, it was hard to imagine they were truly good people.
Still, if it meant being able to live better lives…
“You’re right,” Midwak said. “I was sent here by my boss to make sure no one thinks they can just mess this place up.”
He turned slightly, scanning the city around them.
“And you don’t have to worry. Soon, a very big strike force will be coming here. You don’t need to get directly involved. Just look after the people. Make sure they’re okay.”
With that, Midwak didn’t bother waiting for a reply.
He simply turned and walked off, already searching for any other messes he could deal with around the city.
What Midwak didn’t know was that Centrefield actually had quite a few AFC fighters like Churk. Talented ones. High-ranking fighters who had once stood at the top of the organization.
With AFC no longer existing and new Altered no longer being created, it had become safer for them to hide. If they wanted better lives, it was best to pretend they had never been Altered at all.
They had earned enough money to live comfortably, but since they weren’t the absolute best of the best, they weren’t super rich either.
That was why many of them had stayed behind in Centrefield. And seeing their home damaged hurt. It angered them. Many wished to protect it, just like Churk had.
Relieved that the Howlers were there to help, Churk decided to head back home. He didn’t live near the apartment blocks. Instead, his house was located in one of the housing estates about half a mile away.
By the time he arrived, exhaustion finally caught up to him. When he stepped inside, he let out a long breath. He thought he could rest now.
And once he recovered, he would try to meet more of the Howlers.
“Maybe I can help them with everything that’s going on,” Churk muttered to himself. “And Centrefield will be safe again.”
“Really?” A deep, resonating voice said, as if it came from the pit of the earth itself. “But that’s not going to happen.”
Churk froze.
The moment he turned around, a massive hand wrapped around his neck and slammed him against the wall. The strength behind it was overwhelming, far beyond anything he could resist.
He couldn’t breathe.
“I need an army,” the voice continued calmly. “And I’m going to need the strongest to join me.”
Churk didn’t even get the chance to transform. Unzoku leaned forward and bit straight into his neck. A werewolf’s bite could remove an Altered state after some time. A second bite would turn them.
But a bite from Unzoku…
Who knew what that would do.
