Chapter 565: Meeting Gao Ziyue (7)
He walked over to the sofa and sat down beside her, leaving a respectful distance between them. There was enough space that neither of them felt uncomfortable, yet the closeness was unmistakable.
Gao Ziyue tilted her head slightly, a playful smile on her lips. She had regained some of her composure, though her heart was still beating faster.
“Oh?” Her tone was teasing, yet gentle.
“And what exactly distracted you?”
She already knew the answer, but she wanted to hear it. She wanted to hear him say the words.
Kyrian looked directly at her, his violet eyes meeting hers with disarming sincerity. To him, the question was incredibly simple, almost obvious.
“You.” He answered naturally, as though stating an undeniable fact.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever seen someone so beautiful.”
Silence.
There were no elaborate words, no attempt to impress her, and no hidden intention. It was simply the purest truth, spoken without pretense.
Afterward, as though nothing extraordinary had happened, Kyrian simply reached for the crystal pitcher.
He looked at the amber liquid inside, which glowed with a soft radiance.
“It looks good.” He lifted the pitcher, his eyes meeting hers once again.
“May I pour us some?”
Meanwhile, Gao Ziyue remained completely motionless.
She had heard thousands of compliments throughout her life. Some poetic, filled with elaborate verses and intricate metaphors. Others exaggerated, so grandiose that they bordered on the absurd. Many laced with hidden intentions, accompanied by gazes that promised more than words ever could. All of them hollow, all of them superficial, all of them forgotten the moment they were spoken.
But never, never had anyone spoken to her like that. Without calculation, without trying to please her, without even realizing the effect those words had.
It was as though he were simply stating an obvious fact, like saying that the sky is blue or that water is wet. There was no pretense, no strategy. Only the truth.
Her heart quickened even more, pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. A strange warmth spread across her cheeks, flushing her face before slowly traveling down her neck. She quickly turned her eyes toward the enormous glass wall before them, trying to hide the blush slowly coloring her face. But it was useless. She knew he could see it. She knew her cheeks had turned as rosy as ripe peaches.
Outside, the auction was finally beginning. The auctioneer, an elderly man in a golden robe, stepped onto the stage and introduced the first item with dramatic gestures. People placed bids, their voices rising in competition. Fortunes were offered, treasures changed hands. But inside that room, none of it seemed to matter.
Kyrian calmly poured two glasses, the amber liquid flowing smoothly. He gently slid one toward her, the crystal gliding across the table with a soft sound. Then he turned his attention back to the stage, as though the matter had ended, as though he had not just said something that would completely change the night for her.
Gao Ziyue delicately picked up the glass, feeling the cool crystal against her fingers. She could still feel her heart beating faster, still feel the warmth on her cheeks, still find herself processing the words he had spoken so naturally.
Perhaps, she thought silently as she swirled the glass in her hands, watching the liquid dance within it, it was because, for the first time in a very long time, someone was looking at Gao Ziyue.
Not the Heir of the Sky, not the Sky Family, not the bearer of the Celestial Physique. Just her. A girl who, like anyone else, wanted to be seen and accepted for who she truly was.
And strangely enough, he wanted absolutely nothing in return. There was no ambition in his eyes, no calculation, no strategy. Only the calm, sincere presence of someone who valued her company for who she was, not for what she represented.
She took a small sip, the warm, smooth liquid sliding down her throat. A faint smile appeared on her lips, one meant only for herself. Then she looked at Kyrian once more, her eyes meeting his with a new quality, more open, more vulnerable, yet also more trusting.
“You really…” She paused briefly, choosing her words carefully.
“…don’t have any filter at all, do you?”
Kyrian slowly turned his head, confused. The wine in his hand stopped halfway to his lips.
“Filter?”
She laughed softly, a light, genuine laugh that carried not the slightest trace of her usual self-restraint. It came from the depths of her soul, brightening her entire face.
“Never mind.” She shook her head, still laughing.
“It’s just…” Her eyes met his once again, and the smile on her lips became gentler.
“Something I’m still learning how to deal with.”
She said nothing more, but the silence between them was filled with meaning. Kyrian did not press her, nor did he ask what she meant. He simply accepted her answer with a nod and returned to watching the auction, though his attention was divided.
Meanwhile, outside, the auction continued as usual. Rare treasures began appearing on the stage, a Earth-rank Spirit Sword here, an ancient technique scroll there, a medicinal herb that bloomed only once every century. Bids were announced, fortunes changed hands, and the crowd stirred with every new item.
But neither of them was truly paying attention. Kyrian occasionally commented on an item, his curiosity sincere, but his eyes kept drifting back to her. And Gao Ziyue, in turn, watched him with equal interest, noticing every detail of his expression, every gesture, and every word.
For the first time since arriving at the Sky Caravan, they both felt that they could simply enjoy each other’s company, far removed from the identities, responsibilities, and expectations the world constantly placed upon their shoulders. It was a rare moment, a gift the night had offered them.
The auction continued, item after item, but inside that room, time itself seemed to have come to a halt.
