Chapter 694: Invasion and Talk
Chapter 694: Invasion and Talk
Panic spread through Sunbringer City as Abyssal beings poured out of the portal. The guards hurried people into nearby buildings while ships changed course to avoid the dark mist.
Grey had just finished perfecting his method for the 11th Rank when the hotel shook. Before he could place it into the Creator Invocation Space, a wave of dark power tore through the training room.
He turned into light and shot upward as the building collapsed beneath him. By the time he stopped above the street, most of the hotel was already gone.
Grey looked down at the ruins and clicked his tongue.
He had finally found a decent room, and these bastards had destroyed it before he could even rest.
"The Abyss?"
He looked toward the portal and saw another group coming through.
"They always showed up at the worst time."
Grey spread his consciousness across the nearby streets and checked the attackers. Most were at the first sub-level of the 13th Rank.
Several had landed near the hotel and were gathering the Power of the city leaking from the ruins. One noticed the escaping guests and sent dark strands toward them.
Grey landed in front of the group before the strands reached anyone.
The Abyssal being stopped and examined him, then turned toward its companions.
"Look, a human came to stop us."
"He's only at the 10th Rank." Another laughed.
Grey watched them laugh while the hotel guests ran behind him. He waited until the last person had moved away before looking back at the creatures.
"Were you the ones who destroyed the hotel?"
The nearest one raised its hand.
"Why, was that your room?"
Dark strands shot toward Grey and wrapped around his arm. The creature tried to pull him closer, but he did not move.
Grey caught the strands and sent Axiom Power through them.
Luminous cubes spread along the dark energy and reached the creature's hand. Before it could let go, the cubes had covered its entire body.
Its laughter stopped as its form broke apart.
The others attacked before its remains had faded.
Grey stepped past a blade aimed at his head and pressed his palm against its owner's chest. Axiom Power tore through the creature's inner world and destroyed it on the spot.
He turned toward the two attacking from his other side and swept his hand across them. Their weapons shattered before the same power passed through their bodies.
The last Abyssal being stopped halfway through raising its weapon.
Grey looked at it, and it immediately turned to run.
He caught its neck before it left the ground and forced its energy back into its inner world. The creature struggled for a moment before realizing that nothing it did was working.
"Why did Azathoth send you lot here?"
The being stopped struggling and stared at him.
"Y-You, how did you say our lord's name so casually?"
"Answer me."
"No one ordered us to come!"
Grey kept his hold on it and waited.
"We came to plunder this realm's Origin Power, that's all!"
It looked at him again as if it had finally noticed something worse than the hand around its neck.
"You spoke our lord's name without being harmed, are you one of us?"
Grey grinned.
"No, but I'm better at being an Abyssal being than you."
He sent Axiom Power through its Inner World, and the creature broke apart in his hand. Grey let the scattered energy fade before looking up.
What he had said was true.
His former Abyssal race had been improved and had helped form his Nexus Race. By now, he could use almost any racial ability without being stuck with that race's limits.
These fellows had been rather unlucky to find him first.
More Abyssal beings came through the portal, and Grey could sense World-Breaking Source Power around its edges. It kept tearing the passage open whenever the city's defenses tried to close it.
He was considering what to do when he sensed a much stronger presence near the mansion.
The third sub-level of the 13th Rank.
Grey looked in that direction and found the Overseer rising toward an Abyssal man in the sky. Both carried far more power than the creatures he had just killed.
He could join the fight, but that might draw attention he did not need.
There was also Lily.
That woman had tried to question him and erase his memories shortly after meeting him. Grey wanted to see what else she was hiding before deciding how much to show.
For now, her father seemed capable of handling himself.
Grey moved away from the ruined hotel and looked for somewhere to sit. He still needed to place the 11th Rank into the Creator Invocation Space before he could use it to advance.
Doing that while people threw attacks around the city would be difficult.
He glanced at another building as its roof exploded.
Perhaps asking for a few minutes of peace had been too much.
Then he remembered someone who could help.
"Oh right, Fragment?"
Fragment appeared beside him and looked at the ruined streets.
"Can you protect me while I finish something?"
It nodded and spread its power around him.
Fragment had the same strength as Grey, so the nearby Abyssal beings would not be much trouble. Grey found a clear spot behind a broken tower and sat down.
He entered the Creator Invocation Space while Fragment watched the sky.
At the mansion, Lily stood on the balcony and watched her father face the Abyssal man. Several guards gathered below her, but none had enough power to help him.
The Overseer formed a golden spear and pointed it at the attacker.
"Close the portal and leave my city."
The man glanced toward the Abyssal beings spreading through the streets.
"Leave? When there is such dense amount of Origin Power in this City? We won't leave till we get that."
"You'll have to get through me first."
The Overseer thrust his spear, sending a wave of golden power toward the man's chest. A dark shield appeared in its path and cracked under the hit.
The Abyssal man was pushed away from the mansion, and the Overseer followed before he could recover.
Lily understood what her father was doing.
He needed to move the fight away from the people below.
The Overseer struck again and broke the shield, but the man formed two dark blades and caught the spear between them. Black power spread along its shaft toward the Overseer's hands.
He released the spear and struck the man's chest with his palm.
The blow sent him flying across the sky.
Before he could regain control, the golden spear turned and rushed toward him from behind. The Abyssal man spun around and blocked it with both blades.
That left his side open.
The Overseer caught the spear and drove its point through the man's shoulder. Dark energy burst from the wound as part of his form broke apart.
The man retreated toward the mist.
Lily followed his movement and noticed several shapes hiding beneath her father.
"Father, watch out!"
Four Abyssal beings rushed out of the mist and surrounded him.
Black chains shot from their hands.
The Overseer cut through the first chain, but two more caught his spear and pulled it aside. Another wrapped around his waist before he could move away.
"Abyssal Chains!"
Dark marks spread across the chains as the four attackers joined their power. The Overseer tried to break free, but the wounded man added his strength and forced him to stop.
The chains tightened around his Inner world.
His golden power flickered as he tried to draw energy from the city, but the chains blocked it from reaching him.
The Abyssal man smiled at the result.
"You should have worried about the others."
The Overseer ignored him and turned toward the mansion.
"Lily, run!"
She looked at the chains holding her father and knew she could not keep hiding her power. If she waited any longer, those beings would kill him.
Lily's eyes turned cold as she released the strength left from her previous life.
Bright light spread from the balcony and swept across the city.
The guards beside her stopped moving, followed by the people in the streets. Even the Abyssal beings caught in the light became still before they could finish their attacks.
The Overseer remained trapped in the chains, but the power tightening around him had stopped.
His opponent tried to move and found that his body would barely respond. He forced more energy through his inner world, yet he still could not free his consciousness from the hold.
"What happened?"
Lily rose from the balcony and approached him.
He stared at the girl he had barely noticed a moment earlier. The power coming from her was far beyond what an 11th Rank being should have possessed.
"Who are you?"
Lily raised her hand and closed her fingers.
His dark shield broke as pressure gathered around him. He tried to speak again, but his form collapsed around his Inner World before he could finish.
The Inner World shattered a moment later.
Lily turned toward the four beings holding her father and attacked before they could recover. Light passed through them and destroyed their Inner worlds, causing the chains to fall apart.
She caught her father with her power and began lowering him toward the mansion.
At that moment, another group came through the portal.
They had arrived after her technique swept through the city, and one immediately noticed her standing near the remains of their companions.
"It's her, attack!"
Lily turned toward the first wave and raised her hand.
A bright blast swept through the dark weapons coming toward her and struck the attackers behind them. Their forms broke apart before they could defend themselves.
Another group attacked from the side.
Lily tried to gather more power, but the light around her hand began to flicker.
She gritted her teeth as she checked what remained.
There was almost nothing left.
After waking in this body, she had used most of her old power to improve its potential. The small amount she had saved was supposed to protect her until she grew stronger.
She had not expected to use so much at once.
Stopping the city and killing the man had already taken most of it. Destroying the others had nearly emptied what remained.
Lily moved her father away from an incoming attack, but even that made her form flicker.
If she could not stop the next group, both of them would be in trouble.
The Abyssal beings noticed her weakening and rushed toward her together.
Lily tried to release one more attack.
The light gathered around her fingers and broke apart before she could use it.
A giant hand came down from the sky.
It passed over Lily and her father, then struck the Abyssal beings behind them. Their shields broke under its palm as it pressed them down.
They tried to scatter, but its fingers closed before they could escape.
The hand crushed their forms and Inner worlds, then faded without touching anyone else.
Lily looked toward the person who had appeared beside her.
"Yo, looks like you needed a helping hand."
Grey smiled at her before using his power to support the Overseer.
He had sensed her strength falling while Fragment protected him. Now that he was close enough to check, he could tell that the power she had used earlier was gone.
Grey was quite pleased about that.
He could finally confront this woman without worrying about her unleashing a nuke at him.
Finally, some good news.
"Let's go down before another group comes over."
Lily kept staring at him as he lowered them toward the mansion.
"Y-You, how were you moving?"
Grey glanced at her.
"What do you mean?"
"My technique could stop even a 14th Rank being."
She checked him again, but there was no sign that he had been affected.
"Even after my power ran out, your consciousness should have stayed sealed for another five minutes."
Grey's smile widened as they reached the balcony.
"Who knows, maybe you weren't that powerful."
Lily frowned before he added the rest.
"Miss Reincarnated Being."
She went silent and stared at him for a moment.
"Then... back at the hotel?"
"Yep, I was awake."
Grey spread his hands and smiled at her.
"Now, let's talk, shall we?"
