Pampered Consort of the Fragrant Orchard

Chapter 114.4: Who Set Up Whom? (4)

“The jade seal is not here,” Han Mingze said.

“Then where is it? Tell us, and I will send someone to retrieve it,” the Empress Dowager said, her voice tinged with urgency. It was apparent that she was eager to seal the edict with the jade seal and end things.

“Would you believe this Emperor’s words?” Han Mingze sneered at the Empress Dowager.

The Empress Dowager paused. She indeed wouldn’t believe him. Wouldn’t this be precisely his stalling tactic– giving a false location?

“Then you bring us there.” Han Minghong said, thinking the same thing.

“This Emperor can bring you there, but leave them here,” Han Mingze said.

“Alright.” The Empress Dowager agreed– the children were crying and causing quite a ruckus.

Han Mingze carried the Crown Prince to a bed in the back and said, “Xiao Shanzi, you stay here to take care of the Crown Prince and the other princes and princesses. You don’t need to accompany this Emperor.”

“Understood.” Eunuch Shan nodded.

“Let’s go.” Han Minghong looked at Han Mingze, his excitement evident on his face.

The Empress Dowager also rose, leaving a few people to watch over the princes and princesses as a threat to Han Mingze. She then had two highly skilled martial artists walk on either side of Han Mingze, while she and Han Minghong followed behind them. Behind them walked a group of guards and maids.

Han Mingze led them out of the palace. Not long after they had left, several people entered silently, each person taking on two people, killing those who had stayed behind in the imperial study.

“Who are you people?” Eunuch Shan shielded the princesses and princes, pushing them behind him.

Han Mingyi pulled down the black cloth covering his face, and Eunuch Shan immediately knelt down, saying, “Prince Ding, please save the Emperor!”

“Royal Uncle!” The several princes and princesses recognized Han Mingyi and ran over to hug his legs.

“Everything will be okay now,” Han Mingyi comforted them, then asked Eunuch Shan, “Where did they take the Emperor?”

“They took the Emperor to find the jade seal. They should be on their way to the Cold Palace now,” Eunuch Shan answered.

“The Cold Palace?!” Leng Er exclaimed in surprise, “The Emperor, he put it…”

Even Han Mingyi hadn’t expected Han Mingze to hide the jade seal in the Cold Palace. No wonder the Empress Dowager and the others hadn’t found it after searching for so many days!

But the Cold Palace had never been inhabited before; the first person to live there was the Empress. Although other concubines had moved in later on, they would have been searched at the time, so they couldn’t have brought the jade seal in with them. Therefore, the only possible place for the jade seal to be was with the Empress!

But hadn’t the Emperor and the Empress already fallen out with each other? Why would he hide the jade seal with her?!

Could it have all been just an act? Or was there something else going on?

"Leng Er, take some men and protect the princes and princesses here. Eunuch Shan, you stay too. Leng San and the others will come soon and deal with everyone outside. You just need to protect yourselves. Got it?” Han Mingyi ordered.

“Yes, this subordinate understands,” Leng Er said.

“You few stay here. The rest of you come with me to the Cold Palace.” Han Mingyi said, then left through the window with his men.

Outside the window, several corpses lay shrouded in darkness…

Outside the palace, Du Yunhan brought Du Xiaoli and the others to Ji Lun’s residence. Du Xiaoli looked at him in confusion, “Father, weren’t we supposed to go the city gate to welcome the army? Why are we here?”

“The Empress’ people have taken control of part of the army. They’ve replaced all the guards at the city gate and are preventing the army from entering the city. I’ve already sent people to the city gate– they’ll handle the rebels and open the gates. Before then, we have more important matters to attend to,” Du Yunhan explained.

“Master, we’ve already dealt with all the rebels outside the General’s Manor.”

“Mm, let’s go inside.” Du Yunhan said, entering the General’s Manor and following the household servants to Ji Lun’s room.

As soon as Du Xiaoli entered, she saw Ji Liuxia sitting by Ji Lun’s bedside, and Ji Lun lying on the bed. Ji Liuxia was wiping away tears as she looked at the unconscious Ji Lun.

“Young Miss, Prime Minister Du and his men have arrived,” the butler addressed Ji Liuxia as he opened the door.

Ji Liuxia wiped the tears from her face before standing up. When she turned and saw Du Xiaoli behind Du Yunhan, she gasped in surprise.
