“We’ll retreat!” Empress Dowager gritted out.
“Let's go.” Han Minghong understood leaving now was the best option. Though reluctant, he didn't want to risk his life. “Xiaoli, wait here. I'll come back for you!”
Du Xiaoli couldn't help but roll her eyes. How could anyone be this foolish? Brain damage is an illness– he needs treatment!
“Seize them!” Ji Lun ordered, seeing their attempt to flee.
Dozens of soldiers surged forward, but their opponents were martial artists—and formidable ones at that. Within moments, the attackers were knocked down.
“Leng Yi, you go!” Han Mingyi surveyed the situation. He knew ordinary soldiers stood no chance against these fighters; sending more would only increase casualties.
“Yes, Master.” The seven Leng brothers answered in perfect unison before leaping into the fray.
Luo Qi considered sending Mu Shan and his men to assist, but decided this was primarily the imperial court’s affair. Besides, he trusted the palace had more than just Leng Yi and the others. He waved for his men to stay back.
Sure enough, beyond Leng Yi’s group, additional figures joined the fray— likely the so-called imperial martial experts.
This was a one-sided battle, though a few opponents proved troublesome. Among them was the eunuch who had appeared in the Imperial Study.

The Empress Dowager swept a glance over the people opposite her, her gaze flickering when she saw the Empress and Du Xiaoli standing together.

The Empress Dowager walked slowly, step by step, passing before Han Mingze. Ji Lun and the others carefully shielded him behind her. Her footsteps paused briefly before she continued onward.
The Empress stood close. Perhaps because she had already been deposed, she was not protected like the Emperor. Du Xiaoli stood right beside her, the two women standing very close together.
“Empress,” the Empress Dowager asked, “Do you think this Empress Dowager would tell a traitor like you how to break the curse?”
