Chapter 115.4: Absolute Counterattack! (4)
The Empress Dowager glanced outside and ordered the people in the courtyard, “Attack! Life or death!”
The people in the courtyard all charged toward Han Mingyi and the others. Leng Yi and the others formed a circle, surrounding Han Mingze and the others.
Quickly, more people poured into the courtyard from outside, engaging in combat with Han Minghong’s soldiers.
The imperial study was littered with corpses. Leng Er ordered some of the men to continue protecting the princes and princesses while he led the rest toward the Cold Palace, eliminating some rebels along the way.
Just as they were about to reach the Cold Palace, they encountered the reinforcements sent to support Han Minghong’s men and immediately found themselves in a fierce battle.
“Damn it, why are our reinforcements still not here?!” Leng Er couldn’t help but curse as he saw more and more people falling to the ground.
“They should be here soon!” Leng San sliced the enemy in front of him in half with a single stroke, standing back-to-back with Leng Er to face off against the enemies ahead of them.
“If they don’t get here soon, we’ll be on our way to meet the king of the underworld!” The prolonged battle had left Leng Er and the other men exhausted. Facing an army of over a thousand, he felt dizzy.
“If you go to meet the king of the underworld, I’ll come and fetch you back from him, but you have to tell me what he looks like. Deal?” A crisp voice, like a clear spring, swept away the fatigue in Leng Er and the others’ hearts.
“Princess Consort! If you had come any later, we would have truly been separated by life and death.” Leng Er saw Du Xiaoli and was so excited he almost started crying.
“Haha—” Du Xiaoli couldn’t help but laugh at Leng Er’s dramatic expression, saying, “I’ve brought people here to save you, haven’t I?”
With Luo Qi, Xia Yuan, and the others joining them, Leng Er and the others felt the pressure on them ease significantly. They quickly captured or killed the opposing side, subduing them completely.
Seeing so many taken captive, Du Xiaoli wondered if the Ministry of Justice’s prison cells could even hold them all.
“Princess Consort, how did you guys get in?” Leng Er asked, approaching Du Xiaoli.
“We fought our way in, of course,” Du Xiaoli replied.
She, Du Yunhan, Ji Lun, and the others had gone to the city gate, where the troops sealing off the city had already nearly been subdued. With their arrival, they quickly finished things off and opened the ates. When the gates swung upon, Du Xiaoli saw the large army waiting outside. Upon seeing Ji Lun, they all knelt down.
At that moment, Du Xiaoli realized that the Empress Dowager had not only brought her forces into the palace, but had also dispatched part of the troops loyal to her to monitor the opposing forces, summoning the remainder to the palace.
And so, the Lun family delegated tasks– one group went to rescue the officials, and the rest hurriedly led the army to the palace. Leng Si made contact with those inside the palace and learned that the Emperor and the others were in the Cold Palace. Ji Lun and Du Yunhan quickly led their men to the Cold Palace. Hearing sounds of battle along the way, Du Xiaoli led her people to come to the rescue.
“Princess Consort, let’s hurry and go save Master,” Leng Er urged.
“Alright.” Du Xiaoli exchanged glances with Luo Qi and the others, and they all rushed toward the Cold Palace.
It was no exaggeration to say they slaughtered their way in; they kept running into rebel troops along the way. By the time they had arrived at the Cold Palace, most of the rebels had already been dealt with, and some of the captured soldiers were taken away. Otherwise, this small Cold Palace wouldn’t be able to fit everyone!
Leng Er and his men took control of the entrance to the Cold Palace. Upon entering, Du Xiaoli and the others saw the Empress Dowager and the others being protected by a group of people in a corner of the Cold Palace. Ji Lun, two deputy generals, and a group of guards were protecting Han Mingze and the others behind them.
Upon seeing Du Xiaoli, a flash of murderous intent surfaced in the Empress Dowager’s eyes. Han Minghong, on the other hand, exclaimed joyfully, “Xiaoli, you’ve returned?! I heard the news of your disappearance and was worried sick.”
Han Minghong’s words caused both Han Mingyi and Luo Qi’s faces to flash with displeasure. Han Mingze noticed Luo Qi’s expression, and glanced at Han Mingyi, raising an eyebrow.
Du Xiaoli frowned and walked over to Du Yunhan’s side, unwilling to even spare the scum man a glance.
“Now it’s time to turn your words back on you,” Han Mingze said. “You have now been surrounded. I advise you not to resist any further– surrender peacefully.”
“Do you really think you can capture us with these incompetents?” The Empress Dowager sneered
Incompetents?
Du Xiaoli looked at Luo Qi and Han Mingyi. Were they incompetent? Could incompetents have completely foiled their plans?
“Imperial Mother, your forces outside the palace have been completely dismantled. The Zhong family has been arrested. If you are waiting for people to come rescue you, that’s no longer a possibility,” Han Mingze said.
The wheel of fortune had turned. Not long ago, Han Minghong and the others had said the same thing to him. However, after just a short time, their situations had completely reversed.
“Master, perhaps we should leave first, then we can make more plans,” Nanny Xi urged from the side.
Resentment flashed across the Empress Dowager’s eyes. They had been so close to success– just one more step. If they had held out until tomorrow, they would have succeeded. But in the end, everything had come crashing down at the last moment!
The previous Emperor had severely stripped so much of their power just before his death. She had spent so much effort building their strength back up, only to have it all shattered in one night!
Looking at Han Mingze’s confident expression, she recalled that he had never panicked from beginning to end. She had always interpreted this as him succumbing to reality, but now it seemed he hadn’t panicked because he had known everything would be fine!
She had underestimated him. He had hidden himself so deeply day-to-day; she hadn’t realized he had such intricate and deep schemes!
Compared to the Empress Dowager, Han Minghong’s resentment was even greater. He had been just one step away from becoming the most influential, precious man in Feng Ming– just one step away!
