He couldn’t be bothered to explore the remaining parts of the Grandtree Arena himself. Having Metagross use Teleport to scout and record data would be much, much efficient.
Giving it the Dowsing Machine was also to ensure Metagross wouldn’t miss any Ultimate treasures during its exploration.
