Chapter 1091: Chapter 1308: Generalist

Jade had previously declared with absolute conviction that she wanted to become a Psychic-type trainer after Julian got her Deoxys as a guardian Pokémon.

Yet only a few years had passed, and the little one no longer wanted to be a Psychic-type trainer—her ambitions had grown even greater; now she wanted to be a generalist.

One had to know that even Julian, as ridiculously powerful as he was now, had never considered becoming a generalist. It wasn't that he couldn't do it, but rather that he didn't want to spread his energy too thin.

"Do you know what it means to be a generalist?"

Julian patted Jade's head, somewhat amused, and the little one nodded.

"Then tell me."

"It means I'll become really powerful," Jade stated bluntly.

Single-type trainers were relatively easy to counter, and in that regard, generalists clearly wouldn't have that problem.

"Wrong."

Julian gently poked Jade's forehead with his finger.

"It means you'll have a hard time reaching the peak—you might even end up mediocre."

To be a generalist, the knowledge you needed to master was over a dozen times that of a Single-type trainer.

A person's energy was limited, and by the time you've spent a massive amount of time learning about Pokémon of other Types, a Single-type trainer would have long since used that time to advance a fair distance down the path of a Trainer.

In truth, the drain on spreading attention was only secondary.

The most critical issue was that it was extremely difficult for a generalist to raise truly outstanding Pokémon.

Take the Walker family, for example.

For centuries, they had specialized exclusively in Steel-type Pokémon, and their research into Metagross and Aggron lines in particular had yielded their own unique training methods.

The Steel-type training insights summarized by these family predecessors allowed later generations to avoid many detours on this path. And after those later generations matured, the especially outstanding ones would also leave behind their own insights.

Accumulated generation after generation, this was how the Walker family had become the pillar of the Steel-typing.

By relying on the insights left by these ancestors, Julian had also been able to travel exceptionally smoothly along the early stages of his own trainer path.

Now, with his current strength and vision, he too had added his own understanding to the Walker family's Steel-type Pokémon training insights, for future learners to study and reflect upon.

So if you wanted to become a generalist—and an extremely powerful one at that—then you would need to possess training methods for all kinds of Pokémon.

Simple, foundational training methods could be bought in bookstores or found online.

Slightly more advanced ones would occasionally appear at some auction houses.

But training methods that went any deeper than that were essentially the very foundation upon which a family stood. Unless a family was completely wiped out, such training methods would never be circulated to outsiders.

And there were a total of Eighteen Types, so even if you only picked up half, that was still nine.

Where were you supposed to find nine suitable Pokémon training methods? Relying solely on your own research, it would already be incredibly impressive to produce just one in a lifetime.

Actually, there were quite a few generalists in this world.

The truly outstanding ones were indeed very powerful, but many of them hit a wall at the Elite tier.

As for the vast majority, they simply ended up mediocre.

Anyone who chose to become a generalist was undoubtedly a genius—after all, if you weren't a genius, you wouldn't even entertain such an idea.

Unfortunately, most of them, halfway down the road, found that they had already been left behind by their peers in terms of strength, and so they abandoned that path and chose to specialize in a Single-type.

Some did continued down that road. And in the end, they either sank deeper into a quagmire or achieved a certain degree of success—but that success was far outweighed by what they had invested.

Given the Walker family's strength and resources, they could indeed support Jade in becoming a generalist.

Julian was born standing on the shoulders of the giant that was the Walker family.

And Jade was born standing on Julian's shoulders.

Given how much Julian doted on her, if she truly wanted to develop along the path of a generalist, he would definitely support her from behind.

Right now, however, Jade was only saying this because of Larvitar.

"I, Jade, will never be inferior to anyone in my life. How could I possibly end up mediocre?"

Hearing Julian say that most generalists ended up being mediocre, Jade immediately took it personally and got a little angry.

"I told you to spend less time around Kartana."

These pretentious words were definitely learned from Kartana. At Jade's age, she picked up whatever she was exposed to.

Kartana was the undisputed king of showing off on Julian's team. So when it came to acting cool, it was absolutely number one.

Second place belonged to Zeraora.

In fact, over the past three years, Zeraora had also become a Champion-level Pokémon.

At present, on Julian's team, only Kingambit was still at the Pseudo-Champion level; all his other Pokémon were already Champions.

"Hmph, speaking ill of others behind their back is the conduct of a petty person."

Just as Julian said that, it was overheard by Kartana, who wasn't far away.

"Mm-mhm, a petty person," Jade nodded in full agreement.

Julian waved a hand at Kartana. "Go away. This has nothing to do with you."

Kartana, however, completely ignored Julian and instead walked over to Jade. "Wait until later. I'll teach you some new lines. They'll definitely make you the king of your school."

'The king of the school? Why not the emperor while you're at it?' Julian inwardly grumbled.

"Lar~"

Larvitar gently nudged against Julian, then made a gesture asking to be held.

"You're already taller than me."

Julian was over 1.8 meters tall, while Larvitar was around two meters, so trying to carry it now was really a bit difficult.

"Lar!"

Larvitar didn't care about any of that. It just wanted Julian to hold it.

When it was little and not nearly as big as now, Julian had carried it all the time.

But ever since it shot up in size, Julian rarely held it anymore.

"Fine."

Seeing the longing look in its eyes, Julian finally nodded.

He wrapped his arms around its waist and lifted it up in one go.

With his Mega Pallet Town Physique, Larvitar's weight wasn't really an issue.

Of course, when his cousins saw this scene, they couldn't help but gasp in amazement.

"Child, put Larvitar down right now—don't hurt your back!"

Evelyn hurried over, afraid her precious grandson might injure himself.

"Grandma, it's fine," Julian said, though he still put Larvitar down.

"Alright, go find your mom and dad."

He patted Larvitar, and the little one, still longing for more, reluctantly went off to find the Tyranitar couple.

"I know my dear grandson is strong, but you still have to be careful. Don't get hurt."

Evelyn gently dusted off Julian's clothes, her eyes brimming with affection as she looked at her handsome grandson, her expression carrying a deep sense of pride.

"What Walker family bloodline, what Turner family bloodline—my dear grandson has got the Cavendish family bloodline too," Evelyn couldn't help but mutter.

Julian chuckled but said nothing, after all, his grandpa was heading right this way.

"My dear grandson, go grab some skewers for me," John walked over and used a very flimsy excuse to send Julian away.

"You've got hands and feet—can't you go get them yourself? Why are you ordering my grandson around like some old fool?" Evelyn snapped.
