Chapter 1723: Nightblade
Chapter 1723: Nightblade
BOOOOOOM!
The battlefield disappeared beneath an ocean of explosions.
Flames, ice, sword qi, spear light, shadows, and soul energy collided violently, tearing the surrounding desert apart.
The shockwave spread for dozens of kilometers, reducing towering sand dunes to clouds of dust.
Even the distant Sand Centipede paused for a brief moment, instinctively turning toward the terrifying clash before resuming its battle against the four Hell Demons.
But before it could make sense of what had happened, the Hell Demons were already upon it once more, their deadly attacks raining down relentlessly.
As the dust slowly settled, Uncle Drew narrowed his eyes.
"They’re still alive."
His words had barely fallen when an enormous pillar of black soul energy erupted into the sky, carrying with it a pressure several times stronger than before.
However, a smile appeared on his face when he sensed something else hidden within the storm.
"True Death Qi," he said with a smile.
The rest of his teammates smiled as well, all of them turning to look at Nara.
"Kindly do us the honors, Nightblade," Uncle Drew said.
Nara nodded. She extended her hand, and a black sword appeared in her firm grip, making her a dual wielder.
In truth, aside from Uncle Drew, there were other dual wielders among the Night Riders. However, the greatest of them was Uncle Drew himself. That said, Nara, who mostly went by the name Nightblade, was a special case.
Aside from her Darkness and Lightning Affinity, she possessed two affinities that came with her Ancient Wraith Bloodline.
One was Hellflame, which was natural to all Night Riders, while the second was Death, an affinity she rarely used. Every Night Rider had an affinity for death, but hers was rooted far deeper than the others’.
She could harness Death Qi far more effectively than her comrades. In the past, her left sword, the one she wielded most often, had been forged from True Death Qi itself.
This meant that whenever she chose to fight using her death abilities, that sword became her greatest weapon. It made her exceptionally dangerous, especially whenever she was near a source of True Death Qi.
Today, as the Soul Temple agents harnessed their true death abilities, Nara and her friends already knew the battle was over.
Nara smiled and moved, appearing within the raging soul storm.
"Gentlemen, let’s dance."
She moved as though she were made of wind and appeared behind one of the Immortal Lords.
"Watch out!" one of the three Demigods shouted.
However, before the Immortal Lord could make any attempt to dodge, it was already too late.
His head flew into the air before crashing onto the ground with a dull thud.
Even before the severed head landed, Nara was already standing before the next Immortal Lord, her sword buried through his chest.
One of the Demigods immediately seized the opportunity to close in on her.
However, a grin curled at the corner of Nara’s lips as their gazes met.
"Death’s Gaze."
To the rest of the Soul Temple agents, only a faint purple light flashed across Nara’s eyes.
However, to the Demigod at the receiving end, his consciousness was instantly dragged into a world devoid of light.
Darkness stretched endlessly in every direction.
Just as he was about to wonder where he was, a colossal purple eye slowly opened before him.
It was the last thing he ever saw.
Everything returned to darkness.
Outside, blood poured from his nose, mouth, eyes, and ears.
Then he collapsed onto the ground.
That was the end of him.
Nara capitalized on the shock, eliminating two more Immortal Lords in rapid succession, leaving behind only two Immortal Lords and two Demigods.
"RUN!"
One of the Demigods shouted, and the four of them scattered in different directions.
However, they had only run a short distance before they came face to face with four deadly demons.
Just as Nara had taken advantage of their momentary shock to the Soul Temple Agents and killed two of them, the Four Hell Demons also exploited the shockwave’s effect to their advantage and swiftly ended their respective battles.
Just when the last Sand Centipede died, Uncle Drew told Eryndor to give them a command, causing them to move and stop in four different directions.
It was as if Uncle Drew knew what would happen, so he had planned ahead for them.
Now, Thrakos, Zandros, Kha’zixarath, and Xuanli blocked the paths of the four Soul Temple Agents who had tried to flee.
"You wouldn’t dare kill all of us," one of the Demigods shouted. "Aren’t you afraid of the Soul Temple’s retaliation?"
Thrakos grinned, his broadswords oozing deadly Blood Qi. "And who said we aren’t doing this so they would come after us?"
"True. The Last time, if not because the Dark Creatures interrupted us, we would have reduced your pitiful cult into a pile of bones," Zandros added, a grin forming at the corner of his lips.
They had been with the Night Riders when they attacked the Soul Temple back during the Dark Era, so they knew exactly what they were talking about.
"It is sad that we are now reduced to Demigods because of our master’s laziness in not wanting to grow stronger, faster.
But if I still had my true cultivation, I would have declared war on your Soul Temple tomorrow," Xuanli sneered, not minding that she had just called Eryndor lazy.
She truly meant what she said.
This made the Soul Temple Agents tremble, knowing they were cooked.
One of them retrieved a talisman and was about to activate it when his head fell off his body. Nara caught the severed head by the hair and threw it at one of the Immortal Lords.
He reached out to catch it, but what greeted him was the cold edge of Nara’s black blades. He was split cleanly in half.
The remaining Demigod tapped into his core and was about to ignite it when a large claw belonging to a lion-like beast coated in metallic carapace slammed into him, sending him crashing to the ground.
Before he could get back up, an arrow pierced his head, and that was the end of him. The last Immortal Lord was turned into meat paste by Vargus.
The last thing they wanted was for one of them to escape and report to the rest of the agents. While their deaths would be noticed and investigated soon, by the time anyone reached the battlefield, Uncle Drew and his team would long be gone.
"Let’s leave this place before they come looking for us," Uncle Drew said, and they all nodded.
Eryndor sent his Hell Demons away, and they vanished, leaving the devastated battlefield behind. They now had to cross the Worm Desert and the Howling Mountains before reaching the Black Fire Domain.
It would take them a couple of weeks, but at least they now had a head start.
---
Three days after they left, another team of eleven Soul Temple Agents arrived at the scene where the battle between the first team and the Night Riders had taken place.
Seeing the bodies of their comrades, their blood boiled with fury.
"Follow them," their leader, a Demigod woman, commanded.
Without hesitation, they departed in pursuit of Uncle Drew and his team.
Of course, if only they had known that, over the past three days, Uncle Drew and his team had grown much stronger, they would have rethought this entire plan of going after them.
