Chapter 1103: Trouble on the Horizon
Chapter 1103: Trouble on the Horizon
At least, that was the case until Quinlan asked the single most important question on his mind:
"Who attacked you, Lady Black Fang?"
For the first time since she appeared, the woman’s doll-like expression was threatened to break. A faint but clear sign of fury burned in her violet eyes, sharp enough to make Kitsara flinch beside him out of pure instinct. Her fingers dug into his arm as she clutched him tightly to her chest, looking for safety due to the sudden spike of killing intent.
Kitsara was not at all a damsel in distress, Quinlan knew it perfectly well, which only went to show how much threat she felt. He himself was also taken aback, but his Still Heart worked overtime to keep him battle-ready in the face of an existential danger.
"Adamantite Adventurer team Scarlet Lilies," Black Fang responded with a voice full of poison. But then she added, "The Fujimori clan."
Quinlan’s eyes slid to Kitsara’s. She looked back at him, the same alarm reflected in her red irises. No words were needed; the shared look was enough.
Before either could speak, Seraphiel’s calm voice carried across the space. "Raika is stabilized."
Quinlan turned his head as the blonde elf approached. Her steps were soft, lithe as expected of her. She stopped to stand behind his seated form and lowered her spine forward, her arms sliding around his chest. She rested against him with a tenderness that carried no fear, only love and trust.
His heart might not have been freaking out, but Quinlan still greatly appreciated her gesture of support as the warmth of her breasts pressed into his back. She lowered her chin into his hair, and though it looked sensual, the gesture was more than that:
A show of trust and support of the highest order.
Her gaze lifted from his hair to Black Fang. "Lady Black Fang, was there a strange young woman in their group? Someone who was far too young for the amount of power she wielded?"
Black Fang examined Seraphiel’s calm face for a moment. Seeing her calm expression, the ancient woman calmed as well. Then, she spoke.
"The strongest."
Seraphiel’s fingers tightened around Quinlan, her knuckles paling as confirmation sank in. Her voice was troubled. "This is bad... The Fujimori, led by that weird girl, joined forces with the Scarlet Lilies. They are participating in the manhunt for the Consortium!"
Quinlan’s jaw tightened even before his sexy bombshell of an elven DPS healer finished her statement, having already come to the same conclusion. Kaede, backed by the entire clan and duchy, Silver Lilies, who were the strongest adventurer team in the realm, and even Morgana, the queen of this nation, was after his head.
He was being hunted by a truly troublesome group of women.
But for now, he could do nothing about it. "Are you aware of who she is?" he asked of the woman seated before him.
"Kaede Fujimori, clan leader and duchess."
Quinlan inclined his head, having expected Black Fang to be aware already, as in the few days he’d spent unconscious after the assault on his mind by both the hostile goddess, Sel’Ashra, and Liliyanna, Vex had briefed Black Fang on what had transpired at the feast. From the way Black Fang spoke, it was clear she had recognized Kaede from that description.
Just then, a sharp breath cut through the room.
"Hhhkk!"
The sound dragged everyone’s attention for a heartbeat. Something soft shifted in his arms.
Vex stirred awake.
Her lashes fluttered open, and the first thing she saw was him.
Her Quinlan. Her everything.
Without hesitation, the needy woman pushed upward and pressed her lips against his. The kiss was messy, greedy, full of her heart. Quinlan stiffened at the sudden attack but didn’t shove her away. Of course, he didn’t; he’d rather die than refuse the affection of his women.
But then, after a few delighted seconds of devouring the lips of her beloved, her eyes darted sideways, and reality sank back in. She froze, blinked, and finally noticed Black Fang seated nearby. ȐΆNȮ𐌱ΕŚ
"... Ah."
Recognition and memory passed through her eyes.
But, as was standard for this shameless woman, an apology never came.
Instead, Vex shrugged her shoulders and shoved her lips back onto his for seconds, hungrier than before, tongue tasting him all over again.
Quinlan exhaled slowly into her mouth as his gaze flicked toward Black Fang.
He caught it; the faintest flicker in her thin, sharp brows. A tiny, surgical twitch. The only crack in her perfect poise.
’Great. She’s going to get herself disciplined again.’ Quinlan groaned inwardly as he decided it was time to pull back.
But a voice bloomed in his mind. Feminine. Cold. Cassandra’s.
<Master. Queen Morgana has left the capital. She’s on her way to meet with Lilith Ravenshade.>
The information hit like a splash of ice water poured right on top of his scalp. This was the last thing he wanted to hear right now.
Vex felt it too. She paused, tongue still teasing his, before slowly, reluctantly, withdrawing from the kiss. Her eyes narrowed in mounting worry. It was rare to see her man with such a troubled expression. "What is it, Hubby?"
Quinlan leaned back while wiping a trace of her from his lips. "Our little spy just informed me that the queen had a talk with her husband, after which she decided to leave the capital. She’s on her way to meet Lilith as we speak, which also means that she’s probably going to meet Kaede."
The clearing turned grave instantly.
"This is bad..." Seraphiel winced, her arms tightening around him from behind. "If those three join forces, they’ll become a spear aimed directly at us."
The silence that followed was heavy. Until
Black Fang suddenly rose to her feet. No, that wasn’t quite right; her body outright snapped up with pure killing intent. One instant seated, the next she was on her feet.
"Open the portal," she demanded.
"I’ll kill her."
