Chapter 1104: Vex’s Demand
Chapter 1104: Vex’s Demand
"Open the portal," Black Fang demanded.
"I’ll kill her."
"..." Quinlan didn’t know what to say in response.
Perhaps sensing her chosen man’s great trouble, Vex straightened in his arms. She shifted just enough to sit upright and meet Black Fang’s piercing stare head-on.
"It is not my place to refuse you, Lady Black Fang," But it was Seraphiel who spoke up first. Her hand rested lightly against Quinlan’s shoulder, steadying herself as much as him. "But as a healer, I’m... Concerned. You fought Kaede and a group of Fujimori elites, accompanied by the Scarlet Lilies, mere moments ago. Your wounds might have closed thanks to that spell of yours, but your body-"
"Wait, what?" Vex perked up instantly, narrowing her gaze even further at her master. "You fought who?!"
Black Fang remained silent, though her stillness alone confirmed it.
Vex’s expression darkened. Her voice sharpened as she cut straight through Seraphiel’s gentler words. "No way. Absolutely not. The lunatic is surrounded by her own elites, a specific squad of royal guards, and you’ve already spent a lot of your strength fighting those two just minutes ago!"
Black Fang stood from the seat Quinlan had made for her and looked into her disciple’s eyes.
"I’m not asking for your permission," she replied flatly, then turned her gaze to Quinlan expectantly. "Open the portal."
The air thickened instantly.
That was when Vex snapped and exploded to her feet. Her body was moving before her mind had fully caught up. She stood tall in front of her master with her chin raised, glaring back with a fire that burned every bit as fiercely as the one in Black Fang’s eyes. The disciple had returned the master’s glare in full.
Kitsara flinched. "You’ll get reprimanded again, Vexie..." she whispered, already sensing the storm about to break.
"I don’t care." Vex’s voice snapped. Her fists clenched at her sides as she took a single step closer. "I won’t stand for this, Black Fang."
Even the venomous woman with purple eyes studied Vex with what seemed to be a small hint of curiosity, not understanding why her disciple became so agitated all of a sudden. Vex didn’t even call her master, but Black Fang.
This was the first moment in history where the disciple stood up to her master in full. Vex might’ve never been a model student, and she had one disrespectful mouth on her, but she never took this tone with her master. And, especially when it came to someone like Vex, such subtle language spoke much louder than mere words.
The Hexwitch was more than happy to explain what angered her as such. "I understand that you have a history with Morgana, and her sister just wrecked your home, but you’re no longer in your turf. This is our home, yet you’re acting as if you lorded over it."
Vex took a deep breath before continuing, eyes still as fiery. "My husband risked everything by bringing you here. He opened his doors to a woman everyone else would call a monster, a being who potentially posed a grave threat to all he cared about. He let you in despite his young daughter residing here. Why do you think he did that?"
Vex’s tone sharpened further. "Because I spoke for you. Because I told him you were worth trusting."
"And this is how you repay him? By standing in his home and ordering him around like some errand boy?"
The disciple’s chest heaved, but she didn’t back down. Not an inch.
"When you address the man before you, you’re not just speaking to your Vesper Phenom subordinate, Black Fang."
She jabbed a finger against her own chest, and her voice rose as a challenge that was hurled straight at the woman who had once shaped her. "You’re speaking to my husband, and I demand you show him respect or leave our home." 𝘙âℕÒᛒĚʂ
As the tension between the two women thickened, Quinlan leaned forward in his seat, placed his elbows on his knees, and began thinking inwardly.
Sending Black Fang to confront Morgana was the definition of a double-edged sword.
It had far too many pros and cons; he had to think it over.
The benefits were obvious; the death of Morgana, someone who was after him and seemed very adamant about making the capture. Furthermore, if she were meeting up with Kaede and Lilith to hunt Consortium Members, Quinlan had a very strong feeling that she would not be happy hunting other Consortium members. No, she would ensure to guide the death squad in his direction, even if other targets were easier to find.
As such, her death would not just get the woman herself off his tracks but reduce the chances of Kaede and Lilith going after him, at least until they had other targets to hunt.
But it had many drawbacks as well, or rather risks. First, Vex and Seraphiel were not wrong in that Morgana had the upper hand against an injured Black Fang, who would do the ambush in her lonesome against a fresh target surrounded by capable guards.
Even if he used Cassandra to back her up, they would be far outnumbered. He wasn’t sure the element of surprise would be enough to overcome the odds.
Furthermore, using Cassandra was a risk of its own. Right now, she was a trusted member of Morgana’s group. If Black Fang suddenly ambushed them, questions might arise. The Queen might trust her guards less than she does now.
He didn’t want to waste such a valuable pawn on a gamble.
The last thing to consider was the value of Black Fang herself. Right now, she was his strongest ally. Unlike Yoruha, who didn’t care about almost anything and would rather sleep than participate in an ambush on his enemies, Black Fang was eager to partake. After all, her enemies ended up being his enemies as well. They were on the same side, both hunted by the entire human kingdom.
Losing her on such a gamble didn’t sit well with him.
But...
He stood and placed a hand on Vex’s shoulders calmingly. Then, his eyes found Black Fang’s. "I support your decision."
Killing Morgana was far too tantalizing a prospect to decline.
