Chapter 1946: Joyous Day
Chapter 1946: Joyous Day
"After all the warfare and politics, this is pure heaven," Quinlan grinned, hiding none of his thoughts. "I missed being with my girls like this."
"Hehe!" Sera was doing her best to keep up. "Kaeli, let’s do this."
"T-trying!"
"Hmm, I’m getting the hang of this," Vex spoke with slightly more volume than required. This had the planned result of Quinlan glancing her way, which the Hexwitch rewarded with a gorgeous smile toward her lover.
"This is so fun, Hubby... Wait, is this our honeymoon?"
"This is the warm-up." Quinlan’s eyes shone with a glint his women knew far too well. A greedy primordial’s mounting desire to explore. "Our real honeymoon will be venturing into Thalorind proper and wreaking havoc."
"Can’t wait~" Vex purred.
"Faster, Daddy! Rosie wants to go with the Mommies! If she knew her Papa would just stand still while yapping, Rosie would’ve sat on her Mommies instead!"
"You want speed, huh?" Quinlan tightened his hands around his daughter’s ankles and sent Synchra after them. Rosie shrieked with laughter as they climbed the wave, leaning forward until her chin rested on top of his head.
"Higher!!!"
"Like this?"
He brought their wave up beside Ayame’s, and Rosie squealed her approval straight into his ear.
Quinlan laughed with her. His daughter’s delight was making it very difficult to resist giving her every wave she asked for.
Around them, he still felt the two curtains of water he controlled. Fish brushed through the outer boundary, and he tracked each disturbance while his little girl demanded another turn.
Sera was riding farther down the beach, golden hair streaming behind her as she spread her arms into the wind.
"Quin, can I go all the way to that end?!"
"Along the shore, yes. I’ll bring your wave around."
He extended the swell beneath her board, curving it inside the marked boundary. The Dawnbringer let out a joyous scream, then laughed so hard she had to bend over to keep her balance.
"Kaelira! Come with me!"
The smith was standing now, carefully testing how far she could tilt the wood. She glanced up at her best friend, smiling uncertainly.
"I haven’t tried going that fast..."
"Want a hand? We’ll do it together~"
Quinlan guided their boards alongside each other, and Kaelira reached for Sera. With her friend beside her, the elf leaned into the next swell, her smile growing as they picked up speed.
"Ah... wait, this is fun!" Kaelira realized as she started getting the hang of it.
"I know!"
Seeing how far they’d come, they began laughing together. Kaelira’s navy hair blew across her face, and for once the shy elf was loud enough for everyone to hear her.
Quinlan wanted to hear that much more often.
"Papa! Look!"
Rosie tugged his hair to turn his head. Jasmine was coming toward them, knees bent, both arms out for balance, while Aurora rode beside Lucille on the next swell.
"My love! I’m doing it!"
"My governor is far too amazing, too. No one is a mere pencil pusher in this family," Quinlan laughed.
The governor beamed. "That’s right! Watch this!" She let her board turn across the wave, wobbling once before correcting herself, and came past him laughing with relief.
Aurora followed a moment later, her concentration breaking into a grin as she rode into calmer water.
"Alright. I understand why you girls keep screaming now."
"Another one?" Lucille asked, already turning her board.
"Yes."
Vex swept past them with Blossom following close behind. The Hexwitch was leaning forward for speed, white hair flying through the spray, while the dogkin kept looking down at the water beside her feet.
"Hubby! Rosie! Look over here!"
"Rosie sees both mommies!!"
Blossom looked up at Quinlan with her ears drooping.
"Is Blossom doing it right, Master?"
"You’re doing wonderfully. How does it feel?"
"Wobbly!!"
She tried to follow Vex down the wave, leaning too sharply into the turn. The edge of her board caught the water, swinging the wood sideways beneath her feet.
"Ah! M-Master!!"
Blossom kicked off the tilting board, launching herself high above the wave. Her dress billowed around her as she tucked into a backward somersault, then a second, then a third, blonde hair and tail whirling through the air.
Below her, the board slid free of the turn and skimmed down the swell. Blossom opened out above it, planted both feet on the wood, and bent her knees to absorb the landing.
Her board glided past Quinlan with its nose pointing neatly down the wave.
"Hah... Hah...! That was close!!!"
Blossom stayed crouched, panting with her hands on her knees. The fright had left her heart pounding, and she looked up at her husband with genuine relief.
"Master!! Blossom almost fell!!"
Aurora stared at her. Beside the alchemist, Jasmine had stopped trying to turn her board.
"...Almost," Aurora repeated. "How terrible for you."
Jasmine looked from the perfectly balanced dogkin to Aurora, her mouth twisting wryly.
"I think I pulled something trying to stand up."
"I swallowed seawater."
The two women watched Blossom straighten, still fussing over her footing as her board rode effortlessly over another swell.
Life was unfair.
"Blossom Mommy flew!!" Rosie shrieked, bouncing on Quinlan’s shoulders. "Three times!!"
Quinlan was grinning hopelessly at his dogkin lover. His adorable assassin had just turned a stumble into a triple backflip, and she was worried she’d done a poor job.
"That was incredible, Blossom."
"...It was?"
Her ears perked up, though she kept shifting her gaze between him and the board beneath her.
"I could watch you do that all day."
"Master liked it?"
"It was pure badassery. Very sexy," Quinlan nodded solemnly. He then moved Synchra alongside her, keeping one hand around Rosie’s ankle while he reached out to stroke Blossom’s head with the other.
"My super talented Pupcake cannot stop impressing me~"
Blossom nuzzled eagerly into his palm. Knowing she had impressed him made her so happy that she forgot to worry about the water, her fluffy tail wagging behind her as she beamed up at her Master.
"Blossom will keep practicing!!"
Vex circled back toward them, and Blossom followed her onto the next wave, smiling this time.
"Vex, teach Blossom!!"
"...Shouldn’t it be the other way around?" Vex asked wryly.
"No, Vex is much better!! Blossom can barely stand straight!"
"Haaah... You hopeless girl. Alright, follow my lead!" Vex smiled, and the two took off.
His girls were getting used to the sea. They were choosing their turns, reaching for each other, calling back to the people on the beach to watch them.
Then a board would carry one of them farther out, and she would look down in fresh amazement at the open water beneath her.
They were free to be here. Quinlan felt Jasmine’s happiness through the bond as she took another turn, and gave Rosie a gentle squeeze when his daughter cheered her on.
’What a blissful existence,’ Quinlan sighed inwardly, taking the entire sight in. ’This is why I must fight. This is why I cannot stop growing.’
In this moment, the Primordial Villain steeled his heart.
’No matter what, I must reach a state of supremacy. I must protect them all.’
With that, it was time to enjoy the waves a little more, then take the first step into distant lands!
