Chapter 780: Stormbound Helm
Chapter 780: Stormbound Helm
The dark swallowed Rudra without ceremony, and when it opened again, he was standing in a small grey room with five glowing tiles hovering at chest height, each one bearing the name of a deck he’d built with his own two hands.
[Choose one deck to rebuild. This process cannot be reversed.]
Pulse Breaker. Echo Mayhem. Boarding Party. Ghost Fleet. Tempest Call.
He didn’t hesitate long. Tempest Call had won him his hardest fight and cost him the most control he’d ever surrendered mid-battle, weather that answered to nobody fully, not even the man who called it. If any deck deserved to be walked back through its own truth, it was that one.
He touched the tile.
[Tempest Call: erased.]
The tile crumbled to grey dust and blew away into nothing, and for a moment Rudra felt the small, strange absence of a power he’d carried for weeks, gone as completely as if it had never existed at all.
---
[Choose a prefix.]
Five words hung in the air where the tile had been.
Storm— / Iron— / Tide— / Thunder— / Void—
He read each one, weighing what he actually wanted this deck to become rather than what it had been. Tempest Call had been raw weather, powerful and half-wild. He didn’t want less power. He wanted a hand steady enough to actually hold it.
He chose Storm—.
[Choose a suffix.]
—ward / —wrought / —bound / —fall / —heart
Bound, he thought, almost before he finished reading it. Not caged. Held. The same way a fleet held formation in weather that wanted to scatter it.
He chose —bound.
[Enter one word of your own.]
A blank space opened, waiting. Rudra thought of every fight this deck had ever cost him control in, and of the one thing that had always, eventually, brought the chaos back under his hand.
He wrote: Helm.
[Deck seed accepted: Stormbound + Helm]
[Entering first trial.]
---
The grey room fell away into open air, salt wind and crashing water, and Rudra found himself standing on a narrow stone causeway strung between jagged sea stacks under a sky boiling with a storm that had clearly been waiting for him personally.
[Stage 1: The Drowned Causeway]
Storm-touched crabs the size of hounds skittered up out of the churning water almost immediately, claws crackling with trapped static, and Rudra met the first wave with nothing but his own blade and old instinct, since the deck he’d once have called on for this exact fight no longer existed.
It was strange, fighting weather without owning any of it yet. He found he didn’t entirely dislike the honesty of it.
He cleared the causeway crab by crab, patient as ever, and the sky itself finally answered his progress with something worse.
[Boss: The Squall Warden]
A localized storm cloud dropped out of the wider sky and took on rough shape, limbs of solid lightning crackling into being, and it came at him without any interest in fighting fair.
Rudra read it the only way he had left, pure instinct and years of standing a deck in worse weather than this, and gave ground exactly as much as he needed to, no more, letting the Warden’s own lightning limbs overextend into rock and salt spray until one finally missed by enough to matter.
He closed the gap and ended it clean, and the storm cloud came apart into ordinary, harmless rain.
[Stage cleared. Choose one card.]
Helmsman’s Grip — Passive. Storm effects you generate no longer carry random backlash. Your control over called weather becomes total.
Bound Gale — Active. A precise, guided blade of wind, guaranteed to strike true, moderate force.
Anchor Chain — Defensive. Root yourself in place. While anchored, storms empower you instead of destabilizing you, and you become immune to forced movement.
Rudra read all three twice, and chose without much hesitation.
"Control first," he said aloud, to no one. "Everything else can wait."
[Card acquired: Helmsman’s Grip]
---
The second trial opened onto a jagged reef under a sky that never stopped flickering with lightning, thunder rolling low and constant instead of arriving in bursts.
[Stage 2: The Lightning Reef]
Charged reef-serpents rose from tide pools crackling with stored current, and this time Rudra fought with Helmsman’s Grip already settled into his instincts, calling small, controlled bursts of static to answer their own charge without a single misfire.
[Boss: The Voltaic Leviathan]
The Leviathan surfaced whole and enormous, scales sparking with contained lightning, and it fought with none of the Squall Warden’s raw impatience, patient and calculating in a way that reminded him, uncomfortably, of Vantress.
He weathered its first three strikes on pure defense, reading the pattern, and on the fourth exchange found the same overextension every storm eventually offered if you waited long enough for it.
[Stage cleared. Choose one card.]
Chainlash — Active. Lightning that arcs between marked enemies, chaining damage across a battlefield.
Stormcaller’s Ward — Defensive. Absorb incoming elemental damage and convert it into charge for your next strike.
Helm’s Eye — Utility. Reveal danger and weak points across a wide radius before they arrive.
"Ward," Rudra said, without much debate. A fleet survived on defense first, offense second. He’d built his whole life around that order.
[Card acquired: Stormcaller’s Ward]
A soft chime sounded before the third stage opened, and new text lit the air.
[Mini-Challenge available: The Becalmed Trial. Stand within the coming stage’s dead-calm eye without taking damage for sixty seconds. Reward: mutate an acquired card.]
Rudra found the trial waiting at the reef’s edge, a small patch of unnaturally still water in the middle of the storm, and stood in it while the lightning raged all around without ever quite touching the circle. Sixty seconds felt longer than most fights he’d survived.
[Trial complete. Choose a card to mutate.]
He chose Helmsman’s Grip.
[Helmsman’s Grip → Helmsman’s Absolute Grip: Storm effects now carry no backlash at all, and their strength scales with how many separate weather effects you have active at once.]
---
The third trial dropped him into a sea gone eerily, unnaturally still, ships’ bones littering flat black water under a sky that seemed to be holding its breath.
[Stage 3: The Becalmed Deep]
Drifting wraith-sailors rose from the wrecks, cutlasses trailing thin mist, and here his own control finally mattered more than raw power, small precise bursts of wind guiding their attacks wide instead of trying to overpower them outright.
[Boss: The Windless Captain]
The Captain fought without weather at all, having stolen the wind itself long before Rudra arrived, and for the first time in this cave, Rudra found himself the one bringing storm into someone else’s calm rather than the other way around.
He drew a controlled gale from Helmsman’s Absolute Grip and used it to strip the Captain’s stolen stillness away piece by piece, until the ghost had nothing left to hide behind at all.
[Stage cleared. Choose one card.]
Eye of the Storm — Passive. A calm zone follows you at all times, impenetrable to ranged or weather-based attacks.
Reclaimed Gale — Active. Steal an enemy’s own elemental power and redirect it back at them, amplified.
Silent Running — Utility. Move without triggering weather-based detection or traps.
"Reclaimed Gale," Rudra said. If control was the theme, taking an enemy’s own storm and making it his fit better than anything else on offer.
[Card acquired: Reclaimed Gale]
---
The fourth trial opened onto a vast spinning vortex, gravity itself uncertain, footing shifting with every step toward a center that pulled at everything nearby.
[Stage 4: The Maelstrom’s Throat]
Horrors spawned directly from the vortex’s churn, shapeless and hungry, and Rudra fought them anchored by instinct alone at first, refusing to be drawn toward a center that clearly wanted him there before he was ready.
[Boss: The Maelstrom Heart]
The Heart didn’t attack so much as pull, the whole battlefield tilting toward its center with every passing second, and Rudra spent the fight simply refusing to be moved, planting himself the way he’d once planted himself against an actual ocean and daring the whole vortex to do something about it.
Reclaimed Gale finally gave him the answer, stealing the pull itself and reversing it, throwing the Heart’s own hunger back into its center until it collapsed on the exact force it had tried to use against him.
[Stage cleared. Choose one card.]
Fixed Point — Passive. Total immunity to forced movement, pulls, and knockback.
Vortex Cannon — Active. A devastating spinning projectile, high single-target damage.
Helm’s Command — Support. Allies near you gain your storm-control benefits as well.
Rudra thought of a Ghost Fleet that answered to him alone, and of a family that had stood in worse weather beside him more times than he could count.
"Command," he said. "I don’t fight storms by myself. No reason my deck should pretend otherwise."
[Card acquired: Helm’s Command]
---
The fifth and final trial opened onto open sky, no ground at all, just endless grey cloud stretching in every direction around a single towering column of raw, unbound weather at its center.
[Stage 5: The Eye Above]
Elite storm-guardians patrolled the approach, each one a fragment of the true chaos waiting at the column’s heart, and Rudra fought through them with all four cards finally working in concert, Ward absorbing, Grip stabilizing, Gale redirecting, Command steadying every instinct he had left.
[Boss: The Tempest Sovereign]
It wasn’t a creature so much as the storm itself, wild and total, the same raw uncontrolled power Tempest Call had always carried and never quite tamed. Facing it felt like facing an old argument with himself, the exact question this whole cave had asked him to answer.
Could he hold something this large without losing himself inside it?
The fight ran longer than any of the four before it, the Sovereign testing every card he’d built in turn, and it was only when he stopped fighting the storm and started standing inside it, anchored and unafraid, letting Helm’s Command steady even the wildest gusts around him, that the Sovereign’s raw chaos finally found something it couldn’t simply overwhelm.
He drove his blade into the column’s exact center, and the whole sky above him held its breath one final time before going, at last, calm.
[Final stage cleared. Choose your signature card.]
Stormbound Helm — Ultimate deck signature. Call the full, unbound force of the storm, now entirely under your command. Massive area effect, zero backlash, strength scaling with every other card in this deck active at once.
Absolute Anchor — Passive. Permanent, total immunity to all involuntary movement or control effects.
Crown of the Tempest — Transformation. Temporarily become the storm itself, vastly empowered, for a short and devastating duration.
Rudra looked at the three options a long moment, and thought of every fight still waiting for him past this cave.
"Stormbound Helm," he said. "Let it carry the deck’s own name. Seems fitting, after all this."
[Card acquired: Stormbound Helm]
[Deck complete: Stormbound Helm]
1. Helmsman’s Absolute Grip — no backlash, strength scales with active weather effects.
2. Stormcaller’s Ward — absorb elemental damage, convert to charge.
3. Reclaimed Gale — steal and redirect enemy power, amplified.
4. Helm’s Command — extend storm-control benefits to allies.
5. Stormbound Helm — full unbound storm, commanded rather than merely called.
The grey room reassembled itself around him, quiet and ordinary once more, and Rudra stood there a long moment, five new cards settling into a deck that finally felt like it belonged entirely to him.
"Helm," he said quietly, testing the name the way he’d once tested a ship before trusting her to open water. "Yes. That fits."
The stone arch opened behind him, evening air and familiar voices waiting on the other side, and he stepped back out to tell the others exactly what five hard truths had cost him, and what they’d built in their place.
