Chapter 1022: Mosquitoes

“Mother…?” Lilith called out, her voice laced with hopefulness, as for the first time since her mother’s death, she actually saw her again.

Sure, her body might’ve been a little different, but that was because this was her soul. The shape of her soul made her appear younger and a lot more reserved, but in reality, from the menacing stare, Rael could tell she was a hothead.

In a good way, obviously.

“Lilith? Did you die too? Tsk… I told you to stop messing around and actually live your life. Say, how did you die?” she asked, standing up from her log and approaching Lilith.

She inspected Lilith all over, then frowned slightly.

“Since when did you grow so bold as to ignore me when I’m speaking to you?”

Yeah…

Rael knew these types of parents, and while he didn’t hate them, he felt like they were far too traditional. But thankfully, she began patting Lilith as she had said it jokingly.

“I’m joking, but do talk to me, dear. Did you lose yourself or your soul? It must’ve been rough…”

After a few minutes of silence and just being in the presence of her mother, Lilith spoke up:

“You’re actually here.”

“Yeah? Where else would I be?” Her mother scoffed. “You didn’t fall down and hit your head before dying, did you? I heard that changes your soul a little…”

Then, she glanced past her, noticing Rael.

“And who’s this handsome boy? Is he your boyfriend?”

“Husband,” Rael corrected with a smile. “It’s nice to meet you, mother-in-law.”

The moment she heard those words, she froze. Her earlier cool-mother aesthetic vanished as shock replaced it. Her daughter could find a boyfriend, sure… But she was the type of woman who would never settle down with a husband.

At least, she was sure that was how it turned out. She died when Lilith was still under 10 years old, so she hoped that at the very least, she had inherited some of her good traits. For sure, she got the charms. Heh.

Shaking her head, she said:

“I see. So a husband, huh? Why’d she bring you into the afterlife? Did you two die together or something?”

Rael chuckled. “Nope. I can travel between these realms easily. We’re both alive.”

“Oh? So my daughter chose a powerful man. Good. Very good. My name’s Eve. Oh, and before you start thinking about baby names and all that pregnancy stuff, make sure you two don’t have any regrets,” Eve said, and after a brief pause, added:

“For example, I know little Lilith had always wanted to become a Demon King. Oh, she also wanted to exterminate all mosquitoes. Did she get rid of the mosquitoes yet?”

Rael let out yet another chuckle at how innocently she was acting. In the meantime, though, Lilith was lost. She had been meaning to meet her mother, and perhaps even say a few things to her, but now that she was here, she froze.

Though, seeing Rael’s relaxed expression and how talkative her mother was, Lilith felt like she had nothing to worry about. Her worries gradually faded, and in the end, she got the courage to speak up.

“I didn’t get rid of the mosquitoes yet.”

Eve turned around and pouted slightly. “Why not? They’re annoying and persistent in all realms. Them being gone would be a good thing.”

“I feel like you’re the one who wanted it. I don’t even dislike mosquitoes that much.” Lilith sighed. “Still, I did accomplish one of my goals. I became the Demon King.”

Eve seemed overjoyed for a moment, but then the realization came. “So William is…?”

Lilith immediately shook her head. “He’s not dead. I spared him, and now he’s somewhere else. I think he just wanted a fresh start is all.”

Hearing that, Eve exhaled a relieved breath. She didn’t hold any resentment toward William, since he did what had to be done. For one, if he hadn’t killed her when he did, then the demons as well as all of his other concubines would’ve tried to get Lilith and her killed.

But if he enacted justice and killed her then and there, Lilith could be spared.

After all, in her final moments, Eve made sure to make her wishes clear — the wishes that she wanted her daughter to live on. Smiling to herself, she said:

“That’s nice. I hope he’s doing alright. I wish I could talk to him one of these days, so if you ever meet him, take him to me.”

Rael and Lilith nodded.

Though, since the situation seemed a little bit… well, convenient, Rael decided to ask one more thing.

“I also have the power to revive someone.”

Both Lilith and Eve turned to him at those words. Eve didn’t know what he meant for a moment, but then she realized that he was actually talking about reviving her.

It was an interesting idea, to say the least. But whether it was an idea that made sense was a whole different problem altogether.

Did she want to be brought back? She wasn’t sure. She had already lived a very long life, and she felt like if she were to come back now, she might be a burden to Lilith. As for William, all she wanted to do was tease him for how he had acted and cried in their very last moments together.

Hmm…

“So you’re saying you could revive me?” she asked.

Rael nodded. “I could revive you and give you a body exactly the same as what you used to have. I can promise that much. Though, you should probably discuss it with Lilith and make sure you really want this, since I will make sure you’re immortal. Essentially, since you’re family, I won’t let anyone ever hurt you.”

With that, he glanced over to Lilith, trying to gauge her reaction. But it was fairly blank, since even she had no idea what she was currently feeling.

But her mother, on the other hand, had something to say.
