Chapter 639: Bumpy Road
Chapter 639: Bumpy Road
The journey was oddly quiet.
He knew it shouldn’t be this quiet, especially since they were in the Demonic Realm.
But Rael didn’t bother with it for too long as he decided to scout around.
As expected, there were a few hundred demons trailing them from all sides.
However, they were masking themselves quite well.
He could only notice them after actually trying.
Rael didn’t know what species of demons these things were, but clearly, they were efficient hiders. In this case though, since he felt malice from each one of them, he didn’t have to hesitate long.
With a single thought, all the few hundred demons fell limp in an instant.
He had fried their brains pretty easily.
And without meaning to, he accidentally blew a few of them up.
That seemed to get a reaction out of Elizabeth as she flinched, then frowned.
"It appears our escorts have been killed," she said.
Rael’s eyes widened dramatically.
"Seriously? How will we get to the capital now?"
She rolled her eyes at his act.
"They might not like you, but don’t go around killing my men. They are valuable."
"I didn’t kill anyone," Rael replied plainly. "But if you want to believe that I did, sure."
Elizabeth just stared at him for a few moments, then shook her head.
She was dead set that he was the one who did it, and it seemed like she wouldn’t believe otherwise.
However, Lilith was also here, so she dealt with the backlash.
"It was me, sister. I’m sorry. I thought they were trailing us and preparing to kill us when we let our guard down. You must understand my reasons for being so wary, especially since I haven’t been back to the Demonic Realm in so long."
"..."
"I understand, Lilith," she said, then avoided her gaze. "I’ll send another batch of demons to follow us. Don’t do that again."
Lilith smiled and nodded.
After that, she just rested her head on Rael’s shoulder and didn’t say another word.
However, she did switch to messaging.
<Lilith Sutekh: She has a powerful demon following us from the sky.>
She did?
Where?
Rael looked all around, but couldn’t find any sort of demon.
Noticing this, Lilith continued.
<Lilith Sutekh: Since you’re a new demon, you don’t really know how some stuff works. There’s a demon following us in another plane of existence. That’s how assassins work, and to find them, you must synchronize with their plane of existence.>
He didn’t understand what she was talking about, but if she could detect the demon, then that meant it might actually be here.
Therefore, he didn’t dismiss her claims, and instead, he began trying to sense this demon which was in another plane or something.
At first, it didn’t work, but that was when Rael picked up on a mana signature.
It wasn’t coming from anywhere near them.
Instead, there was a single item a few hundred kilometers away.
It was exuding a lot of mana, and when Rael followed that mana, he saw the outline of a demon lingering right above their carriage.
So that item is like a conduit? Rael mused. That’s interesting... If someone doesn’t know how to look for it, they won’t realize someone’s trailing them until it’s too late.
He wasn’t nearly as mad as he was amazed.
If he could create his own variation on this, then he could hide trillions of constructs in this strange plane, and then send them all out at once so they would decimate some land.
He really felt like a bundle of ideas, and to satisfy his curiosity, Rael proceeded to break that item with a mere twirl of his hand.
The moment he broke it, the presence of that demon was put on full display.
And clearly, the camouflage vanished as well, as Rael could perfectly sense the demon through the ceiling.
The demon’s eyes widened, and right as it was about to dash away and retreat, Rael suddenly froze its time.
Then, he closed his eyes and invaded the demon’s body.
It was a Grade 2 demon, so not very strong.
Even so, Rael cut the demon’s neck with its own blade, and then jumped in front of the carriage.
The wheel ran over the demon and killed it in an instant.
Rael didn’t linger in the demon’s body long enough to feel that.
But clearly, Elizabeth and Lilith felt it.
"Just what are you trying to do?" Rael asked with a sigh. "Do you think sending so many weak demons is going to do anything? It’s like throwing oil onto a fire, you know?"
"I believe she just wants to test us," Lilith said. "After all, I’m sure she’s curious just how strong I’ve gotten after we haven’t seen each other for so long."
Hearing that, Rael could only chuckle.
"Maybe. Though I’ve killed most of the demons who were following us, so you’ll sadly not have a chance to show off."
Lilith fake pouted, and then closed her eyes.
"Fine. I’ll go to sleep then. Watch my back, okay?"
He didn’t have to assure her, as she already knew his answer.
So as she fell asleep while resting against him, Rael glanced opposite to him, meeting Elizabeth’s gaze.
"What was the point in trying to seduce me?" he asked flatly.
"Seduction? If I had tried to seduce you, you would’ve been seduced," she replied with a scoff.
"That’s what a loser would say," Rael replied. "But since you’re about to be a loser, I suppose you don’t have to worry about that title, eh?"
Cheap shots after cheap shots, the two of them went at each other’s throats.
Rael couldn’t see how this woman was related to Lilith in the slightest.
She was like the polar opposite in every single category.
He would be pleasantly surprised if the others were the same.
But probably not, right?
All her siblings can’t be this unbearable...
Maybe.
Rael put those thoughts aside and decided to fully focus on the travel.
After all, he could already feel the capital in the corner of his perception.
