Chapter 633: Chapter 633: Impure Motives (3/5)
Now it’s 2009, and her dad, born in ’76, is just 34 years old, while Yu Duoduo is now 16 and in ninth grade. Of course, it’s summer vacation now and she’ll be a high school student when school starts again. For the time being, they haven’t been too particular about her age, still considering her as a 16-year-old ninth grader.
But 34 minus 16 equals 18, right? That’s how old Yu Duoduo’s dad would have been when he had her. Since it takes nine months to have a baby, if you track back the time, it means that Yu Duoduo’s dad would have had her when he was just 17.
If that’s really the case, then either her father was involved in underage love, or Yu Duoduo is lying.
But everyone knew in their hearts that it was definitely Yu Duoduo who was lying.
It wasn’t that Yu Duoduo hadn’t realized there was a problem with her answer before, but now she was perfectly aware that the age ’76 might be on the younger side, but it wasn’t impossible to have a child then. Surely she couldn’t say she got her own dad’s age wrong just now, as that would make everyone criticize her even more, not even remembering her own dad’s birthday. So Yu Duoduo had no choice but to bite the bullet and explain, "My dad had me rather early."
Yu Duoduo was determined to stick with her story of a ’76-born dad, but if she accepted it, so be it, it wasn’t their concern. However, in her heart, Lai Xixi still gave Tian Sha a thumbs-up for her initiative.
Immediately after, Lai Xixi asked, "So, where are you from?"
"I’m from Jiangcheng, but because my dad is a businessman, I’ve followed him to many places, so I’ve never stayed long in any one place."
The way she answered showed that Yu Duoduo had thought it through since these people came from all corners of the country; it was inevitable that someone might be from a place she mentioned and then the story wouldn’t match up. But when she mentioned being from Jiangcheng, Lai Xixi and Tian Sha had much to say, "Hey, you’re from Jiangcheng? So are we both. Where did your family used to live? Maybe we were even neighbors."
"My family used to live near Wuyang Road. Do your families live around there, too?" Everyone could clearly sense Yu Duoduo’s twitching mouth and the anger she was trying to suppress as she spoke. But sometimes coincidences do happen, and Lai Xixi said, "My family doesn’t live there, but we went to school in that area. Didn’t Xiaoxiao tell you? Jiangcheng University is right by Wuyang Road."
Upon hearing this, Yu Duoduo was taken aback because she didn’t know that these few people were from Jiangcheng University. She knew that Liang Xiao was a university student, as she was going to film the movie written by Liang Xiao, so she was aware of such basic information. It was just that she hadn’t gone out of her way to ask more detailed questions.
But she had indeed lived near Wuyang Road, and so Yu Duoduo finally relaxed her tense brows, "That’s quite a coincidence. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find you all when I go back, but now we can stay in touch more often."
Lai Xixi hadn’t expected her question to inadvertently help Yu Duoduo, and she certainly didn’t want Yu Duoduo seeking them out, quickly adding, "You’ll be a high school student after school starts again. You should focus more on your studies so you won’t fail to get into a good university. Don’t always think about playing. Once you get into university, there will be plenty of time to play."
After finishing her statement, Lai Xixi took a sip of orange juice. She was feeling a bit choked, but as she sipped the juice she glanced at Tian Sha.
Tian Sha immediately broached the subject, "Yeah, aren’t we just students on summer vacation, hanging out with classmates? Hey, Duoduo, didn’t you just say that because of your dad’s business, you couldn’t stay long in any one place? Did you still attend school in Jiangcheng? Who took care of you when your dad wasn’t around?"
"My mom did."
Tian Sha asked with curiosity, "How old is your mom?"
Tian Sha’s question, posed with such a natural expression and tone, still somehow made it hard to suppress a laugh.
Tian Sha couldn’t contain herself after asking, her shoulders shaking as she sipped water, hoping to hold back her laughter. But trying to stifle laughter while drinking water can definitely have the opposite effect, and she began coughing as the laughter caught in her throat.
Tian Sha’s coughing gave everyone an opportunity, and with light teasing, they laughed, "Tian Sha, be careful when you’re eating, how can you still choke at your age?"
Tian Sha waved her hand—it wasn’t intentional.
But Yu Duoduo caught the oddness in that laughter; these people were simply not well-intentioned. Seeing everyone’s smiling faces, Yu Duoduo stood up from her chair, pointed at the people at the table, and said, "You, you all... why are you bullying me? What have I done to offend you?"
Facing Yu Duoduo’s accusation, everyone’s smiles froze, and the laughter stopped as if by mutual agreement.
He Yiran tugged at the corner of his mouth and said, "You haven’t offended us, and there’s no bullying. I’ve never heard of anyone being bullied by being asked questions. We’re just curious about your parents’ ages, that’s all. You can ask us too; it’s not like we can’t tell you. Why are you so agitated, as if we’re bullying you, almost as if... you have something to hide."
He Yiran articulated his explanation in a calm tone, which really made Yu Duoduo’s heart skip a beat. She hastily said, "No, no, my mom is two years older than my dad."
Two years older would make her 19, right? Anyway, her parents had her before they were of legal age, but really, this kind of thing is quite common outside, nothing to be surprised about.
But even if it was surprising, that’s normal too, right? Both her parents were still kids. And besides, weren’t her parents just made up? Just listen and let it be; there’s no need to take it seriously.
"Right, there, you’ve said it, and now it’s all good. Everyone was just curious, and it’s okay if you didn’t want to share. We wouldn’t have forced you. But since you’ve spoken, don’t feel so wronged, as if we really bullied you."
The crowd interjected with insinuating comments, and the four people who had just arrived that morning really didn’t know the full backstory. Pei Ziyu squeezed Mei Mengzhen’s hand, signaling her to explain. But before Mei Mengzhen could answer, He Yiran added the four of them to their travel group chat and shared Yu Duoduo’s background information they had found the day before. Yu Duoduo was not in the group, but Liang Xiao was.
Having missed the chance to check her phone yesterday, Liang Xiao was not about to miss it this time and started reading the message carefully, word by word.
At the same time, the two videos from yesterday were attached, along with a typed account of what had happened during dinner the night before. All this thanks to quick typing; anyone slower wouldn’t have been able to catch up.
Poring over the messages on their phones and listening to the pointed remarks of the girls present, the four individuals grasped the situation. While it wasn’t great for everyone to target a girl, Yu Duoduo’s motives were indeed far from pure.
