Chapter 989: Let Me Protect You

Chapter 989: Chapter 989: Let Me Protect You

Tang Yue fled in panic, not knowing where she was headed. There were numerous forks and quite a few dead ends in the tunnels.

Tang Yue hit several dead ends and felt a strong sense of frustration. She thought to herself, "We’re underground, why does it feel like an underground labyrinth? Can’t even figure out where I’m going."

She decided to hide right here.

Picking a concealed spot, Tang Yue hid away, regulated her breathing, and listened carefully for any sounds coming from the ancient tomb. The group of people chasing her seemed to be about five or six, yet they hadn’t caught up to her after so long. Guess they’re not that skillful?

Just as Tang Yue had this thought, she realized that they had caught up with her.

Tang Yue: "..."

She held her breath, tried to stay calm, and kept her breathing as quiet as possible for fear of being heard. She knew some martial arts, but facing five or six at once, she wasn’t foolish.

Being alone here and not knowing much about the enemy’s capabilities, she dared not act rashly.

"The last sound was heard nearby, you all, search around." A man’s voice arose from somewhere, with a dialect she couldn’t quite understand, but she knew instinctively they were here for her.

Secretly, she touched the electric shock baton in her pocket, something Meng Siyu had gone to great lengths to get for her self-defense.

Coming to Jing City to find Meng Siyu this time, she had brought her usual hiking backpack. Besides food and water, it was filled with various self-defense items.

Knives were all right, but Tang Yue believed this electric shock baton might be more useful.

As footsteps approached, Tang Yue cautiously took it out, ready to strike at any moment.

Listening closely until the footsteps reached in front of her, she made her move.

"Ah..."

A scream pierced the air as Tang Yue struck swiftly, following it up with a kick towards the man.

The man was caught off guard, shocked by the baton, then kicked against the wall, struggling to glean his bearings.

Quickly, she delivered a chop to the back of his neck, and instantly, the man passed out.

In the darkness, Tang Yue swiftly moved in another direction, finding a new hiding spot. She inhaled deeply, calming her breath, reflecting on the details. The man seemed to have already been injured, as she believed she smelled blood on him during the kick.

What bad luck; searching for Si Yu yet stumbling upon tomb raiders.

Murmuring to herself, Tang Yue cautiously moved to another area to find someone else. Just as she got up, she noticed someone approaching.

How did they get here so fast?

Gripping the electric shock baton, her bright eyes widened.

"I’ve already seen you."

As his flashlight shone in her direction, Tang Yue had nowhere to hide, immediately attacking him. Each hit with the baton granted her a brief respite.

As the fighting sounds rang out, she realized more people were heading her way.

"Who are you? What are you doing here?" The man questioned harshly.

Pressing her lips together, Tang Yue remained silent, opting to conserve her energy for fighting rather than talking.

Wu Xin and Zhao Xiangqian certainly must have arrived too; it’s just that this underground place is too vast, they couldn’t find her right away.

Tang Yue’s prowess combined with the electric shock baton was more than enough against one man. While fighting, she suddenly sensed the wall she leaned against giving way; the next moment, she felt herself falling backward.

The abrupt loss of balance made Tang Yue’s heart skip a beat, but a hand grabbed onto her, helping her to stabilize. Before she could react, a familiar voice sounded: "At your six o’clock."

Without time to think, Tang Yue kicked behind her just right to catch the man who had been chasing her.

"Si Yu," Tang Yue exclaimed joyfully towards the corner, where the fallen flashlight brightened the passageway a bit. Using the faint light, she saw who was leaning against the corner - none other than the missing Meng Siyu.

"Watch out behind you."

Meng Siyu was injured, and had gone two days without food. Arriving here, he’d fought with those six tomb raiders. Resting a bit, he saw someone approaching.

At first, Meng Siyu planned to keep silent; the spot he chose was a most overlooked corner, protected by a statue. If he decided not to reveal himself, he wouldn’t be discovered by anyone.

Yet, upon seeing it was Tang Yue, Meng Siyu disregarded his injured leg and extended a hand to pull her.

Tang Yue did not have time to rejoice, tightly gripping Meng Siyu’s hand, striking the man with the baton repeatedly. The man dared not approach. Quickly, Tang Yue retreated to Meng Siyu’s side, exclaiming: "Your leg is injured."

"It’s no problem," Meng Siyu intended to step forward and protect Tang Yue.

However, Tang Yue showed unexpected strength, declaring, "Stay here for a bit, this time, let me protect you."

Pushing him aside, she advanced to confront the man.

Let me protect you.

A simple statement, yet it stirred Meng Siyu’s emotions.

No time for sentiment, as Tang Yue engaged in the fight with the man. With his leg out of commission, Meng Siyu could only provide guidance from the sidelines.

Getting pointers from someone as experienced as Meng Siyu, Tang Yue handled it with ease, defeating the man who lost the ability to continue fighting. Gleefully, Tang Yue threw herself into Si Yu’s arms, tears she’d held back all day now flowing freely like a broken dam: "You scared me to death!"

"Waa waa waa~"

Tang Yue wished to cry out all the concern and fear she had felt for days.

"It’s okay now." Meng Siyu held her tightly, knowing well enough he hadn’t seen her cry so vulnerably since they met.

Her petite frame, when held gently by Meng Siyu, seemed so slight, drowned in sobs, hot tears dripping on his chest, scorching his heart. Bowing his head, he kissed her forehead, speaking hoarsely: "I’m fine now, darling. From now on, I’ll be the one protecting you."

Tang Yue raised her tear-stained face, eyes red like a pitiful little rabbit, evoking concern. She pouted: "I too wish to protect you, don’t want to be someone who solely needs your protection."

"Even if it’s doing something very small." Tang Yue added, her tear-drenched eyes clear and bright, her gaze filled with hope. She’s not some helpless being; she wants to help him, even protect the one she loves.

No longer intent on arguing, Meng Siyu gently wiped away tears from her face, praising in delight: "You did excellently just now, truly a heroine. Without you, they’d be taking shots at me."

His exaggerated last words made Tang Yue burst into laughter, her inner thoughts clearly knowing that without Si Yu pulling her, others wouldn’t have found him.
