Chapter 965 - 969: Gossip in the Family Compound
After Huo Jingrui left, Yunyi closed the main door and went straight back to bed to catch up on sleep.
But she hadn’t been asleep for long when the noise outside woke her up.
Thinking about cooking lunch for Jingrui, she decided to get up.
She took a round in the kitchen and saw that the oil at home was almost out. She didn’t have any stored in her space, so she thought of going to the supply store outside the residential area to check.
She poured the little oil left in the bottle into the cooking pan, put the empty bottle in the basket, and headed out with it.
Once out, she realized why it had been so lively earlier; it turned out that the son of Commandant Xu, who lived next door to Commissar Hong in the front row, was getting engaged today.
Yunyi saw Sister-in-law Lü chatting idly with someone, so she went up to greet her: "Sister-in-law Lü, busy?"
Wan Ruhua saw it was Yunyi and smiled, pulling her over: "Sister, where are you off to?"
Yunyi pointed to the oil bottle in her basket: "We’re out of oil at home, so I thought I’d check out the supply store."
Wan Ruhua followed her gaze and smiled, chiming in: "The supply store got in some soybean oil yesterday, you’re just in time."
Yunyi chuckled: "That’s great to hear. Well, you carry on, I’m off to get some oil."
Yunyi hadn’t walked far when she heard Luo Xiaofang, Commander Qiao’s wife, chirping in: "Really can’t manage a household — hasn’t been that long and already a bottle of oil is gone."
Wan Ruhua, not one to tolerate Luo Xiaofang’s gossiping, retorted: "The other day Deputy Regimental Commander Huo’s family hosted guests, so it’s normal for the oil to run out. Besides, it’s not like they’re spending your money. You’re minding business that’s too broad for you, aren’t you?"
Luo Xiaofang was displeased: "Wan Ruhua, I wasn’t even talking about you, why are you butting in?"
Wan Ruhua rolled her eyes: "What you’re saying doesn’t make sense, so I have to step in."
Seeing the two about to argue, Sun Yanru quickly interjected: "Luo Xiaofang, mind your own business and stop gossiping about others."
Even though Luo Xiaofang felt unwilling to let it go, she couldn’t afford to offend Sun Yanru since her husband was serving under Commander Wei: "I was just speaking off the cuff, she didn’t have to raise it to such a level."
Everyone knew Luo Xiaofang’s nature well enough, so no one engaged with her further.
The topic shifted to high school exam results: "By the way, why did Commandant Xu’s son get engaged so quickly? Wasn’t Commander Zhan’s daughter unwilling before?"
"What do you know? Commandant Xu’s son did well in the exams, so naturally, his value went up, and now Zhan Qiuye is eager."
"So confident that Xu Haigang will get into college?"
"Commandant Xu’s wife said her son’s results are sure to get him into college. Plenty of people have come by to propose, so Zhan Qiuye wouldn’t dare drag it out."
"Speaking of which, someone from my mother’s side received an admission letter yesterday. Why hasn’t there been any news here in our neighborhood?"
"Right, besides Commandant Xu’s son Xu Haigang, there’s also Commander Qi’s wife Jiang Yuwei who took the exams."
"Commander Zhang’s daughter from the Second Group also took the exams."
"Oh yes, I heard Deputy Regimental Commander Huo’s wife also took the exams."
"Yes, yes, yes, Deputy Regimental Commander Huo’s wife said it herself that day. Wonder if she’ll get into university."
"She’s married and still wants to go to school?"
"Didn’t Commander Qi’s wife Jiang Yuwei also take the exams? Why can’t a married woman go to university?"
"Will Deputy Regimental Commander Huo and Commander Qi agree to it?"
"Exactly, university lasts several years, what about the households if they go to study?"
