Chapter 829: The Creation of Elemental Sword Art. Part-5.
*Shmmm!!!*
While the enraged crocodile demon wreaked havoc in the underground research facility, Zain and Daniel found themselves teleported inside a dimly lit room.
"Urk... hff... hah... hafff... ugh..."
Professor Daniel collapsed on the ground instantly, and blood started to flow out of his wound like a fountain!
Zain, on the other hand, remained petrified in one spot like a statue.
He wanted to escape; he wanted to take advantage of this moment and leave, but for some reason, Zain’s body refused to move.
He couldn’t bring himself to leave without knowing the answers to the questions that were brewing in his mind.
Staring into the eyes of Professor Daniel, Zain suddenly asked out loud,
"You... why did you save me? You and your subordinates tortured me for days! You treated me like a lab rat! But then why did you jump forward to block the attack for me!?"
Zain hated all the researchers in that facility to the very core, and he even felt like gloating at their demise.
If the demon had killed Chief Professor Daniel and Daniel had shown patheticness by begging for mercy, Zain would have fulfilled his desire for revenge and could have gone into the afterlife in peace.
But now, the man that Zain hated the most had sacrificed his life to save Zain’s life, which completely messed up Zain’s mind.
Now Zain could not laugh at Daniel’s demise.
"Hehe... why did I save you?... urk!! Cough!! Cough!!... hehe..."
A manic-like grin appeared on Daniel’s face as he coughed out several mouthfuls of blood and spoke,
"Kid... it seems... cough!!... you are having a misunderstanding... I didn’t save... urk!!... haff... I didn’t save you; I saved the possibility of ’Hope’ that we all had been cultivating for five years!"
There was not a single shred of regret or fear in Daniel’s eyes even in the face of death.
Despite the fact that he was bleeding out and was going to die soon, a happy smile hung on Daniel’s face as if he had accomplished a truly great deed!
"Me and the other researchers... we had already become tainted by... darkness and corruption after doing so many inhumane experiments... we were bound to get retribution sooner or later..."
"And we all knew that what we were doing was wrong... and yet... we didn’t stop; we even used highly toxic drugs to continuously boost our mind powers and make more breakthroughs..."
"At first, it was all for the sake of saving our race... but later on, it became a project that evolved into a search for a new ’Torch’ that could carry the flames of ’Hope’ for this dying world..."
The brightness in Daniel’s eyes started to slowly fade away as his life force depleted at an astonishing rate.
"The ’Elemental Immortality’ experiment was supposed to create a method for creatures to merge all types of elementals into one body in an extremely stable way without facing any side effects!"
"If a creature can manage to merge all elements in its body and form a complete fusion of elements, it would gain tremendous vitality and become immortal in both body and mind!"
"The power of the elementals in such a body would then be so powerful that the creature will become highly resistant to even miasmic corruption and may even gain the ability to subtly influence corruption to a certain extent!"
Daniel raised his trembling hands and took off the space ring from his finger.
"Although we did not succeed due to the immense difficulty, we managed to create you, who have perfectly merged with the ’Darkness’ element!"
"You are the first sign of ’Hope’ that we have created with our five years of efforts and endless sacrifices to help save this dying world from the abominable demonic races..."
"Zain... Forgive me for what I have done to you; I am indeed guilty, but there are many innocent people out there that will certainly benefit from your powers..."
"Please, if possible... make this world a better place so that wretched people like us will not appear again..."
Daniel threw the space ring at Zain’s feet and spoke with a calm and gentle smile.
"I am a dying sinner with barely any time left; let me take away all the guilt, pain, and suffering with me so that I can face punishment in the afterlife for all the sins I have committed..."
"As for you, you have a bright future ahead of you, kid; do not waste it in vain. Live a life that you would be proud of... I just hope, that all the sacrifices that went into making you, will not go to waste..."
"Please... Do not follow the ’Path’ of revenge... Live an upright life and do not become like me... Take care... and... thank... you..."
Slowly the trembling voice of the dying head professor faded away in the darkness of the dimly lit room, but the message that he left behind kept ringing in Zain’s mind again and again.
From the very beginning, Zain had thought that Daniel and the others were complete lunatics that were torturing people purely for their own entertainment.
But Zain had failed to understand the mentality of these researchers completely.
Yes, they were all lunatics that had committed grave sins, but for the sake of creating a new ray of hope for their dying race, these dark elven researchers had sacrificed their emotions, their feelings, and even their souls to darkness!
They had completely sacrificed their existence just to search for one ray of hope that might help save the world in the future!
Just to save this so-called ’future,’ Daniel willingly shielded Zain with his own body and helped Zain escape far away from the rampaging demon.
Daniel’s plan to escape alone by sacrificing his subordinates had seemed cowardly and disgusting to Zain before.
But now that he saw it from a new perspective, he realized that Daniel was willing to go to any lengths for the sake of his research.
He was even willing to die for the sake of saving the newly discovered ray of hope!
