Chapter 1390: A step forwards

Michael’s eyes widened with complete surprise. Thankfully, his newfound swordstyle allowed him to sense an incoming attack from behind.

He twisted his body to the side just as the Unity Creature punched forwards, its fist just barely grazing past Michael’s helmet.

Somehow, the Unity Creature had surpassed Michael’s speed! It hadn’t been able to do that before!

And not only that, Michael saw the brief instance in which its feet began to glow with the power of Unity. It exhibited the same kind of reality-altering power as with one of his signature moves.

The Unity Creature used the Quantum Step.

It had used Michael’s own move against him. And the worst part was that it was even faster than his own move!

Michael couldn’t believe it. But it seemed that he didn’t have time to be surprised. Once again, the creature’s feet glowed with the power of Unity before disappearing from Michael’s sight.

This wasn’t just teleportation. It was much faster than that. It transcended reality, as if he was behind Michael from the first place! It didn’t work with the confines of space and time! It’s exactly like how the Quantum Step worked!

"How... how is it faster?" Michael asked himself.

He raised his arm, golden nanoparticles forming to create a mechanized shield in his forearms to block the Unity Creature’s uppercut.

The shield was created with layers of protective sheets, much like how a bulletproof vest worked. But even with that kind of technology, Michael found himself hurtling backwards because of the excess force from the punch.

Nanoparticles once again coalesced and formed into a rectangular box behind Michael’s box, forming a sort-of jetpack that allowed him to immediately cancel out the force of the punch and stop himself in mid-air.

Michael shook off the pain in his hands.

He looked at the Unity Creature and tried to understand how it used an even faster version of the Quantum Step.

They were supposed to be the same cultivation. And yet, its speed surpassed that of his own move by a good mile.

It definitely wasn’t because of power. It was because of technique.

Somehow, the Unity Creature made an evolved version of the Quantum Step.

Michael’s first instinct was to have ChatJK6 analyze how the Unity Creature was able to do that. But then, he remembered that she was still busy trying to analyze the Unity Armor that they used.

So, it looked like he’d have to do all the analysis himself.

The Unity Creature’s legs lit up with prismatic light, before disappearing from Michael’s sight.

This time, Michael didn’t focus on avoiding the attack. He simply focused all of his attention on the creature’s movements. He wanted to see in perfect detail how it used Unity in accordance with the Quantum Step.

A punch landed directly in Michael’s gut, stunning his entire body for a moment. The nanoparticles defended against the attack the best it could, but Michael didn’t even try to dodge out of the way.

Michael coughed up blood as he hurtled backwards.

But even with the internal injury, Michael’s eyes still stared at the Unity Creature. His focus never wavered. It became his obsession to figure out how it used the Quantum Step.

And in the meanwhile, the Unity Creature used this chance to perform blow after blow.

It punched Michael down, sending him flying down into the ground. But it suddenly appeared on the ground, before punching up and sending Michael back into the stratosphere.

This back and forth continued. Michael trusted his own resilience and his own defense to protect him in this vulnerable time.

As the Unity Creature appeared above him to strike him down once more, Michael caught a glimpse of its feet.

His eyes widened.

At the last second, Michael raised his hand and protected himself from the slam.

He hurtled like a meteor down into the ground, cracking the black stone floor underneath his feet.

But this time, he defended.

Then, he looked up at the Unity Creature with a smile on his face. "Hahaha... it was so obvious," he said to himself. "I should have known..."

He had figured out how the Unity Creature was able to use the Quantum Step even faster than him.

It was because it used its feet.

Michael had been using his arms to use the Quantum Step all this time. He used his fists to grab at the space in front of him and literally transport him towards a new place with absolute speed.

That’s what he did. That’s what Harbinger taught him.

It was only now that he realized that what Harbinger taught him was not the real Quantum Step. It was only the weakened version.

After all, when Harbinger taught him this technique, he’d been a mere Body Formation cultivator.

And not only that, but Harbinger had only been manifested as his arms at that point. Meaning, Michael could only exert the Nascent Power using his hands.

That’s why Harbinger taught him to use it for his Quantum Step.

But now, Michael was a bona fide Nascent Spirit cultivator. Every single inch of his body was brimming with Aubility Power that could influence reality itself.

There was no need for him to limit himself in using his hands.

Instead, he could use his feet. That’s why it’s called the Quantum ’Step’.

After all, that’s what’s faster.

Michael had to thank the Unity Creature. If it weren’t for it using its feet to propel itself, he wouldn’t have been able to discover his own ignorance.

Now, he looked at his feet.

He summoned his own Nascent Armor. Golden nanoparticles bubbled out of his feet, before coalescing and condensing into a pair of armored boots.

Underneath this solleret, there was a circular exhaust. Similar to the exhaust of a rocketship.

Michael focused his Nascent Spirit and directed them at his feet.

Immediately, it began to billow out flames, as if it was a jet trying to take off.

Except, it was actually from the warping of space underneath his feet. It was the result of the fabric of reality burning into flames as Michael stepped away and transcended its limits.
