Chapter 245: To New Avalon [II]
Chapter 245: To New Avalon [II]
Lucius sat down in the mini restaurant compartment of the private jet.
As for how it fit into the jet... he did not know, but what he did know was that he was currently sitting down opposite the President’s daughter, Amber, while looking ahead.
They were the only ones in this place.
Another member of the crew had decided to show the ladies around while Amber apparently pulled him here for some kind of important chat, though he could already guess what the conversation would be about.
’Council nonsense,’ he thought with an internal sigh.
"How are we supposed to eat in here...?" He asked, glancing around the space.
There was no staff behind the counters. Hell, it didn’t even look like a restaurant apart from the chairs and tables.
The whole setup seemed sterile, almost like a waiting room rather than a dining area. Though he had eaten breakfast, he would give a lot for a nice dessert right about now.
"Ah." Amber said, and something that might have been embarrassment flickered across her face. "Forgive my ignorance... I will show you."
There were buttons on the table, and though Lucius had noticed them, he decided to pay them no mind.
They looked like simple call buttons, the kind you’d see in a hospital.
She tapped her own button and a holographic menu appeared in front of her face, floating in the air with perfect clarity.
The display showed dozens of options, each with detailed descriptions and images.
"You simply tap the button, pick what you want and..." She touched a cup of coffee on the holograph.
A compartment of her table split apart with a soft mechanical whir, revealing the cup of coffee that was pushed to her table as the compartment was filled back up.
Steam rose from the cup, and the rich aroma of fresh coffee filled the air between them.
"That is the power of the GC300’s technology."
Lucius raised an eyebrow, he was genuinely impressed.
He tapped his own button and scrolled through the options.
He had to admit it was detailed. There was a section for drinks, food and desserts, each category breaking down into subcategories with almost overwhelming specificity.
He quickly picked a slice of cake from the dessert section, selecting what looked like chocolate with raspberry filling.
Immediately the compartment below him parted open, revealing a small cake right in front of him on a pristine white plate.
The presentation was immaculate, like something from a five-star restaurant.
’I wonder why the Council would be gatekeeping this kind of technology,’ he thought, taking in the smooth mechanics of the delivery system.
He really did not care if it didn’t reach the other sides of the world. If it had been integrated in his mansion, he would have been very happy.
However, maids were there for a reason, and there was something satisfying about being served by actual people rather than machines.
"Well then, I would like to place down a bit of rules that you will follow... once we reach New Avalon city." She said, her tone shifting from friendly to businesslike.
Both of Lucius’s eyes flicked to her, his expression cooling instantly.
Regardless, he gripped the knife that accompanied the cake and cut into it completely, the blade sliding through the layers with satisfying ease.
He used his fork to bring a piece to his mouth, taking his time.
"I would have to disagree with you there." Lucius said simply, his voice was flat.
He chewed slowly, savoring the taste while making her wait.
"I am on vacation. I will not be obliged to listen to any of the Council’s requests or even yours by extension."
The cake was good, at least. Rich and not too sweet.
He chewed on another piece while she looked at him.
On a regular note, people were afraid of her and took her seriously, especially when they knew that they had nothing else to lose.
Since one order from her mouth could lock that person behind any jail, ruin careers, and destroy reputations.
However, facing somebody like Lucius who had the political support of almost the whole world... it felt like a serious waste.
At the end of the day, Lucius would overwhelm her in any political battle, and they both knew it.
The power dynamic here was completely inverted.
"I didn’t mean it like that." Amber said quickly, her composure cracking slightly. "However, Sir Lucius, if I may... there are a lot of horrors of the city which must make you keep your guard up."
She leaned forward slightly, her hands clasped together on the table.
"Which is why the Council drafted out a complete schedule that would—"
She was tired of trying to convince him.
It was obvious what the ending was going to be. He continued eating his cake, completely ignoring her as he cut another piece with methodical precision.
The silence stretched between them, broken only by the quiet clink of his fork against the plate.
’As long as he’s not bought in by Avalon, I can remain...’ Amber thought desperately.
She was an A-rank and finishing this mission successfully was the last mission she was assigned to before her father would bombard her with resources that would help her rank up to S-rank smoothly.
The breakthrough materials alone were worth millions, not to mention the training facilities and expert guidance.
Which was the whole reason why she was even wasting her time like this, dealing with someone who clearly had no interest in listening to her.
"I plan to spend my vacation to the fullest." He said with a shrug, finally breaking the silence.
He set down his fork and met her gaze directly.
"Going to many different places and seeing sights... you shouldn’t disturb me while on such a trip."
His tone made it clear this wasn’t a request. It was a statement of fact.
"I understand, but you should know that you are very famous." Amber said, grasping at straws now. "You will be surrounded by citizens that want your autograph, photos, conversations... That could be very disturbing, even dangerous."
She paused, gauging his reaction.
"The Council has recommended a disguise for you, if you’d like to know. Something simple but effective that would let you move around without constant attention."
Just then he downed the last of his cake and pulled out his phone, opening an app and beginning to type rapidly.
His fingers moved across the screen with practiced ease.
"If I may ask... what are you texting?" Amber ventured, curiosity getting the better of her.
"I was asking Selene whether I could host a meet and greet, and she said it’s fine." He said while dropping his phone back on the table with a soft thud.
The casual way he mentioned the Moon Goddess made Amber’s eye twitch.
"Now I don’t need to wear any sort of disguise."
’I forgot he’s on texting terms with the Moon Goddess,’ Amber thought, feeling a headache building behind her eyes.
That was the most powerful S-rank in the whole of Avalon, a living legend who could level cities if she felt like it.
And he was just... casually asking her for permission to throw a public event.
The plate swirled down into the table with the same mechanical precision as before.
Lucius ordered a cup of juice next, selecting orange from the menu. The cup swirled out and he drank down the juice in a few long gulps, not even bothering to savor it.
"Now if you excuse me..." Lucius got up, pushing his chair back. "I have to prepare for landing."
He exited the small restaurant, leaving her alone in the sterile space.
The door slid shut behind him with a soft hiss.
The President’s daughter pulled at her hair and gritted her teeth, her carefully maintained composure finally shattering.
"Why does he have to be so stressful?" She gritted her teeth, her voice rising slightly.
It was just like dealing with a child, except this child had the political power to ignore anything she said. "Listening to me, donning on a disguise, following Council guidelines... that’s the only safe way to have a normal life in—"
The door suddenly slid open again.
Lucius walked in and looked at her weirdly, taking in her disheveled appearance and the way she was dramatically dragging out her black hair.
He said nothing, just tapped the button on the table, scrolled through the menu, and picked the doughnut option.
He grabbed the glazed doughnut from the plate that emerged, still looking at her with that same weird expression.
Then he left again without a word.
She dropped her hands slowly, her hair falling back into place.
The door slid shut.
Amber sat there in the empty restaurant compartment, staring at the wall where Lucius had just been standing.
"...Fuck."
...
"We have now flown over the borders connecting Avalon and Aurelia." Dasher announced as he pushed his hands down on the yoke of the plane.
The aircraft banked slightly, adjusting its trajectory with smooth precision.
"We will be in New Avalon city shortly."
Lucius looked out of one of the windows in the cockpit and the sea looked beautiful.
Crystal blue water stretched out endlessly below them, sunlight dancing across the waves in glittering patterns. But just ahead he could see a brilliant city which he guessed was New Avalon.
The skyline was impressive even from this distance.
Towering skyscrapers that seemed to pierce the clouds, buildings that gleamed like they were made of silver and glass, and what looked like floating platforms scattered throughout the cityscape.
’So this is Avalon’s capital.’ he thought, taking it all in.
"So where are we going to land?" Lucius asked.
Selene had said that she would take care of it, however he was still curious how she would manage it.
New Avalon’s airspace was notoriously restricted, with strict protocols about who could land where and when.
"The Moon Goddess has already given us coordinates on where to land..." Dasher replied, his voice carrying a note of awe that hadn’t been there before.
He adjusted some controls, and the plane began its descent.
"I never imagined I would actually talk to the Moon Goddess on the phone, but dreams do truly come true."
Lucius looked at Dasher, really looked at him this time.
The guy was too honest for his own good and he was quite old too. Not that he had anything against it, but still... didn’t he know some things were best kept to yourself?
The reverence in his voice was almost embarrassing to witness. It was just Selene after all...
"I see." Lucius said simply, not really knowing how to respond to that.
His phone buzzed and he received a text from Selene immediately.
[Moongoddess🔹: My fated one... I can see your plane from the distance😏]
Lucius stared at the message for a moment.
Yes, for some reason she was calling him her "fated one" like they belonged in some sort of Chinese romance novel.
He didn’t hate it, the term was oddly endearing in a way, but he would really like to know why she was referring to him as that.
Regardless, he texted her back, keeping it simple.
[Yes, on my way]
He hit send and pocketed his phone, watching as the city grew larger in the window.
...
Selene looked at the text and stretched her arms while standing on the side of the runway where they were supposed to be landing.
The wind whipped through her hair, carrying the salt smell of the nearby ocean.
"Hey Pooch... are you sure that he is my fated one?" Selene asked, though her voice carried more excitement than doubt.
She had moon silver hair that was silky and currently wore a casual shirt and trousers, a far cry from her usual formal attire.
She’d wanted to look approachable, not like the legendary S-rank that made politicians nervous.
As for who she was talking to, there was a small pixie-like spirit which nobody could see floating by her side.
It glowed with ethereal light and its tiny wings were beating so fast they were just a blur.
"Most positively... but you’ll know once you see him." Pooch said while circling around Selene’s head, leaving trails of silver light in its wake. "Think about it... all that time we’ve been searching and he actually never awakened yet."
Pooch was right, and the realization still sent shivers down her spine.
She had received a premonition while on her Awakening day, about a man that would guide her into the future, and that he was the only man she was meant to devote herself to.
He would bring out the power in her moon and gravity affinity just by being around her.
The vision had been so vivid and so real. She could still remember the feeling of completeness it had promised.
And while she worked to rank up, she searched for her fated one.
She’d traveled the world, met countless powerful men, tested her reaction to every S-rank and A-rank she encountered.
However, to no avail. There was no man in the world that could make her feel that sensation that the vision described.
So she had initially given up on the whole thing, deciding it was just a fever dream or a metaphor she’d misunderstood.
That was until Lucius awakened.
She finally started feeling a sensation very similar to what the vision had promised. A pull, like gravity itself was drawing her toward him.
’And that only solidified last week when he summoned an asteroid from the belt,’ she thought, her heart racing at the memory.
The space energy, even from afar, made her feel more powerful.
Her control over gravity had spiked, her connection to the moon had deepened, and for the first time in years she’d felt... complete.
If she was the moon, then Lucius had to be her space.
Finally, the Aurelia GC300 touched down on the runway.
The mana surrounding its wings flared bright blue before vanishing as it pulled to a stop, tires squealing slightly against the concrete.
The compartment opened up and an automatic staircase came out, unfolding with mechanical precision.
Amber and Lucius stepped out first, followed by the girls. Vanessa was yawning, Villy was alert and scanning the area, while the others were stretching and looking around with curiosity.
The instant Selene saw Lucius, that familiar tingling sensation went up her spine.
It was electric, overwhelming, like every nerve in her body was suddenly alive.
She immediately ran toward him, practically vanishing from where she’d been standing.
The distance between them closed in less than a heartbeat, her S-rank speed making her nothing more than a silver blur.
She covered him in a hug and they cleared about twelve meters before finally falling, tumbling across the runway with her still hugging him tightly.
They rolled twice before coming to a stop, Selene on top.
"You truly are my fated one..." She said while nuzzling his chest, breathing in his scent like it was the most intoxicating thing in the world.
Her arms were wrapped around him possessively, and she showed no signs of letting go.
Lucius stared blankly at her, his mind trying to process what had just happened.
’What’s going on?’
His back hurt from the impact, and he was pretty sure he’d scraped his elbow on the runway.
