Chapter 889: Proper Arrangements
Chapter 889: Proper Arrangements
Sun Yun spread out the clothes, "Dad, take a look at Mr. Li’s clothes and quilts, they’re all pretty good. Do you want to take them back and wear them?"
Zhao Tian smiled and said, "Why not? Let’s do that. It saves your mom from having to make new clothes for me. Mr. Li’s clothes must be good." In the eyes of the illiterate elderly, educated people are a notch above them—not that they see them as gods, but they certainly think everything about them is good.
The second lot was from Li Shaoguang, the young man’s belongings were his luggage, clothes, and woolen sweaters and trousers.
Sun Yun spread out the sweaters and trousers, "They’re quite good. I’ll unravel the yarn and knit a sweater and trousers for Qingxiang. These clothes can also fit him."
The clothes weren’t in great shape, after all, young guys wear out clothes quickly, but if they were to be worn in the fields, there wouldn’t be a problem.
The last bundle was Li Liyun’s clothes. Sun Yun looked through them one by one—some big, some small—likely clothes she’s kept from before, well preserved.
As she looked through them, she muttered to herself, "I’ll alter these for Xiaoling and Xiaole, they’re quite nice clothes."
In these times, no one minds old clothes, especially old clothes from familiar people.
The two sisters were busy stoking the fire; both rooms needed heating. They hadn’t been lived in for over two months, and it wouldn’t warm up quickly.
Little Hong trailed behind the two sisters like a little tail.
"Sis, I never thought we could live here. We’re staying in Sister Xiaoyun’s room." The sisters had once studied here with Li Liyun.
They were quite familiar with this place. Who would have thought there’d be a day they’d call it home?
"I wonder how Sister Xiaoyun is doing?"
Zhao Xiaoling had finished her chores and was thinking about heating water.
"Didn’t Mr. Li send a letter? Aunt Yuanyuan is there too."
"Sis, do you really not remember Aunt Yuanyuan at all?"
"I don’t have much impression, just know Aunt Yuanyuan was very beautiful. You’re older than her siblings."
"Does that mean Aunt Yuanyuan has met me?"
"Yes, she has. Our cousin is familiar with Aunt Yuanyuan. You can ask her when you visit your great aunt’s house."
"Sis, do you think if we study hard, we can go to the Capital to find Aunt Yuanyuan in the future?"
"I think it’s possible, right? Let’s study hard."
"Of course, I’ll work hard. I don’t want to spend my life farming here; Sister Xiaoyun said the world outside is vast and wonderful. I want to see it, so I must strive hard.
Sister Xiaoyun said there are many amazing things in the Capital that we can’t even imagine. Sis, you must work hard too."
Zhao Xiaoling nodded, "I definitely will. It’s not just you who doesn’t want to stay here forever, even I don’t."
She always had a goal: in the future, when she had money, she’d make sure her parents took it easy, did nothing, and ate whatever they wanted. Isn’t that the good life?
When the water boiled, Grandpa was about to leave too.
Today, all five of them were eating together in the new home, so it was quite a feast: a piece of meat braised with potatoes, bread by the side of the pot, and they even steamed an egg custard for Little Hong.
Sun Yun was in a good mood, with a smile on her face. She even broke tradition by picking food for her little sister.
The two girls earlier cooked with their backs to each other while stoking the fire. This way, lying in bed wouldn’t be uncomfortable.
"Sister Xiaoyun left us all her books. Sis, should we read or help Grandma and Grandpa with the corn?" Zhao Xiaole, holding a book, asked her sister.
"Let’s work instead. We don’t have much time left here."
Though reluctant to part with the book, Zhao Xiaole knew her sister was right. She’d long decided that if she ever had the capability in the future, she wouldn’t return to this place.
At night, Sun Yun clung to Zhao Qingxiang. Ever since the harvest season began, the couple hadn’t had any intimate moments. Zhao Qingxiang was quickly aroused by his wife’s teasing.
They weren’t enemies, though Zhao Qingxiang was upset with how she treated the girls poorly, but in other aspects, there was nothing to complain about his wife.
The next day, Zhao Qingxiang went back to slaughter the pig. It’s earlier now, but dragging it out would be a hassle, plus, if the weather got too cold, the pig would lose weight. Better to slaughter it now. They’d keep enough at home and sell the rest to the farm.
The whole family went, and Zhao Qingjie came to help too. This speeded up the process considerably.
They kept the pig’s innards and fore lard at home. The rest of the haunch and ribs were loaded onto the cart and taken to the farm. After all, they had moved houses, and the house and land needed to be handed over.
The four women returned to Zhao Tian’s house. The two girls weren’t idle—they shelled corn as the adults made blood tofu and cleaned the innards.
Zhao Qingjie went home. He wasn’t too happy. After marriage, they were two separate families. Now the best house went to his older brother, and he obviously couldn’t feel good about it. That’s why he didn’t help with the move the day before yesterday.
He knew this was wrong, but couldn’t help it. He was probably jealous of his older brother. That was a natural feeling.
An Lixia was helping burn pig hair with her eldest daughter-in-law, "Xiaoyun, there’s not much meat left at home."
"Mom, we’re just trying to save so that when the three kids are away, they won’t be able to help us, and the workload is overwhelming for just us two. We still need to manage our lives, right?
It’s just eating a bit less, which we can endure."
An Lixia nodded, "Alright then, as long as you’re aware. Your family, except for Little Hong, is all too exhausted. You all need to replenish well."
"Mom, I know. We’re reserving for Qingxiang since he’s the one supporting the family.
And it’s not like you and Dad haven’t given us meat. We don’t feel that hungry anymore."
The mother and daughter were both efficient and quickly finished cleaning. Zhao Qingxiang left ten pounds of ribs for his parents. Good meat should definitely be offered to the elders. An Lixia even started cooking a large piece.
It wasn’t until lunchtime that the father and son returned, and everything was sorted out. Now it was officially moved over.
Lunch was cornbread and stew for the whole family, with nothing special prepared.
After lunch, "Mom and Dad, you can head back. The three of us will help Grandma shell corn, and we won’t be leaving tonight. It’ll be quicker this way."
Zhao Tian and An Lixia, the old couple, were naturally willing. They hoped someone would stay with them, but the kids had work to do, so they couldn’t speak up.
Before their children left, they were happy to live together.
Zhao Qingxiang had no objections; he was glad the kids were close to their parents.
Zhao Qingjie returned home without any unusual behavior. His sons didn’t notice, but his wife, Qi Xue Mei, could certainly tell. She wanted to console him but didn’t know how.
