Chapter 1936: On the Plane

Chapter 1936: On the Plane

Ning had seen an online video of Stonewall lifting an armored vehicle during a power demonstration, holding it above her head with little difficulty before placing it back on the floor.

Her awakened ability greatly increased her physical strength and reinforced her body whenever she exerted herself.

The more weight she carried or the harder something struck her, the denser and more durable her muscles became.

The third hero sat across from Stonewall.

She was a silver-furred werewolf with long ears, pale blue eyes, and a narrow face.

Her dark purple costume left her hands uncovered, and several metal spheres floated slowly above her palm as Ning entered.

Her hero name was Farhand.

She possessed telekinetic abilities, allowing her to stop moving objects, lift people, and create invisible barriers around herself.

Ning also remembered seeing her at the research facility, although they had not spoken then.

Farhand closed her fingers, causing the floating spheres to drop neatly into her palm.

"Sir Blackfang," she said.

"Miss Farhand."

Ning looked toward Stonewall.

"And Miss Stonewall."

The Orc gave him a firm nod. "I had heard you were coming, Sir Blackfang. I was excited to meet you. I hear your physical strength is quite high."

"It’s alright," Ning said.

"We should test our strength sometime. It would be fun to see who is stronger."

Lightspeed turned around in his seat.

"Don’t break anything before the summit. The president will blame all of us."

"She’ll blame Blackfang," Farhand said. "He’s responsible for everything important."

Ning narrowed his eyes.

"Why would only I be responsible?" he asked.

"The soldiers have repeated it at least six times," she said. "No one touches the cargo without Blackfang’s approval."

"Oh, that’s mostly just the four cases in the back. I doubt I’d be blamed for everything else."

The other passengers began arriving soon afterward.

Sharron entered carrying three bags filled with documents, followed by two of her assistants.

Foreign Minister Adrian Kors came next, accompanied by several diplomats Ning did not recognize.

The final group consisted of President Morstell and her security officers.

Once everyone was seated and the doors were closed, the plane began moving.

Ning took the seat beside a window.

The aircraft left Gargan City shortly afterward, rising above the capital before turning toward the southwestern coast.

For the first hour, Ning listened to the officials discuss schedules, trade proposals, and meetings that had been arranged with representatives from other countries.

Most of it did not concern him.

His responsibility was protecting the technology and dealing with threats.

The diplomats could handle everything else.

President Morstell eventually left the private section at the front of the aircraft and sat in the empty seat across from Ning.

She looked tired.

The preparations for the summit had probably left her with little opportunity to sleep.

Ning looked past her toward the three heroes.

"Why aren’t Godhood and Frostveil coming?"

The president followed his gaze.

"You don’t believe the heroes I selected are sufficient?"

"I didn’t say that. Godhood and Frostveil are the strongest heroes in the country, though. I expected at least one of them to come."

"Neither Godhood nor Frostveil possesses an ability suited to protecting a diplomatic delegation," she said.

Ning narrowed his eyes. "Godhood could make attackers surrender."

"If he has time to speak to them and if they can hear him," she said. "His power is useful for resolving a conflict, but not necessarily for stopping a bullet or an explosion."

Ning nodded slowly.

"And Frostveil?"

"She could freeze an entire building and everyone inside it," President Morstell said. "That is useful during a battle. It is less useful when we are surrounded by foreign leaders whom we need to keep alive."

Ning looked toward the other heroes again.

Lightspeed could remove people from danger before an attack reached them.

Stonewall could place herself between the president and almost anything physical.

Farhand could stop projectiles or hold attackers at a distance.

Their powers were better suited to protection.

Ning could do all of those things and more, but the president did not know the full extent of his abilities.

Even if she did, relying entirely on one person would be foolish.

"I suppose that makes sense," Ning said.

"Godhood and Frostveil are needed back home anyway. The moment we announce the contents of those cases, there will be people making attempts to steal everything. I’ve placed those two in charge of stopping that."

Ning hadn’t considered that. He nodded slowly as he realized that the president had indeed given everything some thought.

President Morstell closed her eyes and leaned against the window, letting herself fall asleep, though it didn’t look like she was that successful.

The flight continued for several more hours.

The dry plains beneath them slowly disappeared, replaced by wide rivers, dense forests, and green hills that stretched to the horizon.

Ning watched through the window as they crossed into Veronoth.

The difference was immediate.

Conjora had fertile regions, but Veronoth seemed almost entirely covered in vegetation.

Forests grew across mountains and valleys alike, interrupted only by towns, roads, and enormous estates surrounded by cultivated fields.

Rivers twisted through the landscape, reflecting the afternoon light as they traveled toward the distant sea.

Mist gathered along the lower hills, moving between the trees like pale rivers of cloud.

"We’ve crossed the border," one of the pilots announced through the cabin speakers. "We will arrive in Cape Mistam in approximately forty minutes."

The diplomats began preparing themselves.

Documents were returned to folders.

Clothing was straightened.

Security officers checked their weapons and communication devices.

Ning remained at the window, watching outside as they approached the city.

Cape Mistam spread across the shoreline beneath them.

The city was larger than Ning had expected, with white stone buildings covering the green hills, connected by winding roads and bridges built across narrow valleys.

At the highest point of the cape stood an enormous palace.

Several towers rose from the structure, each covered by green roofs and golden decorations, while gardens stretched across the surrounding cliffs.

Behind the palace, the land ended abruptly at the sea.

"That must be where we’re staying," Ning said.

The president looked through the window on the opposite side.

"The Tide Palace."
