Chapter 1937: Cape Mistam

Chapter 1937: Cape Mistam

The aircraft descended toward a private airfield outside the city of Cape Mistam.

Soldiers wearing dark green uniforms stood in rows beside the runway, while flags belonging to Veronoth and Conjora moved in the coastal wind.

Ning could see several government vehicles, mounted royal guards, and a line of officials gathered beneath a decorated platform.

"This is more elaborate than what I was expecting," Stonewall said as she leaned toward the window, looking outside.

The plane landed.

The moment its doors opened, music began playing outside.

President Morstell exited first, accompanied by the foreign minister and her immediate security detail.

Ning followed with the other heroes, remaining close enough to the president to intervene if anything happened.

A young man walked forward to welcome them.

He appeared to be in his late twenties, with shoulder-length golden-brown hair and bright green eyes.

His formal uniform was dark blue, decorated with silver thread and a long green sash carrying Veronoth’s royal emblem.

A thin golden circlet rested upon his forehead.

Ning immediately understood who the man was.

Prince Tarian Valecrest, the eldest son of Veronoth’s king and the official representative responsible for overseeing the summit.

The prince bowed his head to President Morstell.

"President Morstell, welcome to Veronoth."

The president offered her hand.

"Thank you, Your Highness."

Prince Tarian took it briefly before turning toward the rest of the delegation.

"We are honored to receive the representatives of Conjora in Cape Mistam. His Majesty regrets that he could not welcome you personally, but he will meet you at the opening ceremony."

The prince’s gaze moved across the heroes. He must have been notified as to who was coming, so he smiled as he looked through them.

His eyes then settled on Ning.

"And you must be Blackfang."

"I am, Your Highness," Ning said with a bow.

The prince smiled.

"We have heard a great deal about you. We are excited to learn more about you."

Ning liked him already.

Prince Tarian greeted Lightspeed, Stonewall, and Farhand before leading the delegation toward the waiting vehicles.

The president turned toward Ning and made a gesture with her eyes to take care of the cases. Ning nodded and went to get them. The four heroes each took one of the cases and began following the prince.

The prince carried himself differently from President Morstell.

The president spoke and moved like someone who had fought to reach her position and expected to fight to keep it.

Prince Tarian appeared far more relaxed, as though he had spent his entire life knowing that every room would make space for him the moment he entered.

Despite that, Ning did not sense arrogance from him.

The man simply seemed comfortable with royalty.

Ning found the entire thing interesting.

The government vehicles carried them away from the airfield and toward the city.

Citizens had gathered along several roads to watch the foreign delegation arrive, waving flags and taking pictures as the procession passed.

Ning saw humans, Beastmen, Elves, Orcs, and several races he had encountered only rarely in Conjora.

The city became older as they climbed toward the palace.

Modern streets gave way to stone roads, tall walls, and buildings covered in vines.

The air smelled of salt and rain.

The Tide Palace grew larger before them until the entire view through the window was filled with white walls and green towers.

They passed through three guarded gates before entering an enormous courtyard.

Servants and palace officials waited to receive them.

Prince Tarian stepped from the first vehicle and remained beside President Morstell as the delegation gathered.

"The Sisanians arrived yesterday afternoon," he explained while they entered the palace. "Their delegation has already settled into the eastern residence."

President Morstell nodded.

"And Bronveria?"

"They are expected tomorrow morning."

The prince led them through a wide hall lined with paintings of Veronoth’s former kings and queens.

"Representatives from Dolvar, Restane, the Kelmic Isles, and several smaller nations have also arrived," he continued. "The remaining delegations should reach Cape Mistam throughout tomorrow."

Ning walked several steps behind the president, looking at the paintings.

Some of the rulers had been humans.

Others had been Elves, Beastmen, and people belonging to races Ning could not immediately identify.

Veronoth’s royal family had clearly married outside its race many times during its history.

"And Faedria?" President Morstell asked.

Ning’s attention immediately returned to the conversation.

"Faedria’s delegation is expected tomorrow evening," he said. "There was a delay while their three leading candidates finalized who would accompany them, but they have confirmed that they will arrive before the summit begins."

Leamor would be among them.

After months of waiting, the man was now less than two days away.

Ning had waited for this moment, and he could wait no longer.

The palace staff showed each member of the delegation to their rooms.

President Morstell and the diplomats were placed in the central wing, while Ning and the other heroes received rooms nearby.

The sealed cases were being prepared to be taken to the palace vault, where they would be safe under some of the strongest defenses out there. However, Ning didn’t trust it much at all. After all, the enemies had people who could slip through defenses and would not be stopped by mere suppression fields.

"President, I will keep the cases in my room," Ning told her.

The woman narrowed her eyes. "Are you sure? You will be out and about most of the time."

"You know you can’t trust a vault," Ning told her. "They will be safer with me. You trusted me to do this for a reason, did you not?"

The president looked at Ning with sharp eyes for a moment before nodding her head. "Alright, do it."

Ning took the cases to his assigned room.

It was far larger than Valen’s apartment, with a private sitting room, an enormous bed, and a balcony overlooking the sea.

As soon as he arrived, he placed the cases into his storage. That was the one place not one of the Numbers could ever get to.

Once they were safe, Ning could finally be free to do everything else.
