Chapter 1957: No Other Choice
Chapter 1957: No Other Choice
Ning noticed the surprise on Tritus’s face. He hadn’t expected Ning to know of the agreement at all.
"Since you are doing this, it either means that this world has no other Constellation ruling it, or you found some loophole because technically it’s this kid that is the one providing the energy that opens the portal, which lets you pretend you aren’t interfering with another world directly."
Tritus stared at him.
The earthquakes continued beneath their feet.
Ning turned. "If I had to assume, I would say it’s both, right?"
For the first time since Ning arrived, Tritus seemed far less interested in the portal than in the man standing before him.
"Who are you? How do you know about the agreement?"
Ning smiled, remaining silent.
Tritus’s eyes narrowed as he fully turned toward Ning for the first time, no longer looking at him as just an ant.
"That information is not known to humans."
"Of course," Ning said. "I’m not exactly a human either."
"Who are you then?" Tritus asked. "Did someone send you here? You should not know anything about Meghilars, much less an agreement made between Constellations. Tell me who sent you here."
"I suppose you wouldn’t know who I am," Ning said. "But I know exactly who you are. And I know what I must do. Tritus, I hope you know. You are dying today."
One moment Ning stood several meters away.
The next, his hand was wrapped around Tritus’s wrist.
Tritus’s eyes widened. It happened so quickly that he didn’t even notice Ning’s arrival. And then, before he could act, Ning opened his mouth.
"System. Link."
<Creating Link with the Constellation Will known as ’Tritus’>
<All Energy Cap Removed>
<Linking...>
<Linking...>
Tritus froze, his face going pale.
Something inside him had changed just then.
<Link Established Successfully>
The massive reserve of energy that made up his existence suddenly began flowing away from him, dragged through the connection Ning had created and disappearing somewhere the Constellation could neither see nor stop.
Tritus tried to pull his arm away and was freed. But his energy didn’t stop flowing. It slipped out like a tub with its drain unplugged.
And he could find nothing to plug it.
The Constellation’s expression finally changed to genuine alarm. He moved around in a panic, and the illusion around his squid head and mummified torso vanished, revealing him for what he truly was.
"What are you? What are you doing to me?"
Ning stood where he was, simply watching Tritus with a cold look.
"You consider yourself a god, don’t you?" he asked. "Well, I’m the one they call when they need to kill a god."
Tritus attempted to gather his power again, but the energy vanished faster than he could properly control it, pouring through the Link while the System absorbed it directly into Ning.
The portal behind them flickered, becoming unstable. Whatever power Tritus was using to keep up the link between Jun’Tal and the portal was beginning to weaken.
An army had gathered on the other side, but with the unstable portal, they could not come through.
Jun’Tal remained unconscious for now.
Tritus stared at Ning as though seeing him properly for the first time.
"How are you doing this?"
Ning smiled.
"You Constellations really do ask the same questions when this happens."
Tritus’s face went still.
"Plovaxis. Yogarthis. Zurinus. All of you," Ning continued. "You are exactly the same."
The reaction was immediate.
Tritus knew the names.
Ning continued, recounting the Constellations he had hunted during his journey across other worlds, one after another, names belonging to beings who had once believed themselves untouchable until Ning found them, linked himself to them, and drained away the energy they had spent centuries or millennia accumulating.
With each name, Tritus’s expression became more disturbed.
Those were not random beings.
They were Constellations. They truly were untouchable, and yet, some of them had simply vanished without anyone knowing exactly what had happened to them.
And Ning spoke of their deaths as casually as someone recalling places he had visited during a long journey.
Tritus stopped struggling. His eyes widened as one possibility finally entered his mind.
"Was it you who killed Meghilars?"
Ning shook his head.
"No. Someone else did that. But I’m the same as them in the way that matters."
The Constellation’s breathing changed.
Finally, he realized just what it was that was happening. He was being killed by someone with the same power as the one who had once killed the Galactic Will so long ago.
The death of the Galactic Will was what had allowed them to come into existence, and compared to that, they were very weak. And yet... they were still being killed all the same.
"Why?" Tritus asked.
Ning raised an eyebrow. "Why?" he asked. "Do you not understand why?"
Ning pointed at the portal. "It’s because you are evil. You are trying to kill people just to get a bit of notoriety. Did you think you could do something like that and not get killed?"
The thing stared at Ning for a long time as he felt the energy inside his body come close to depleting. Any more and he would die.
His face suddenly twisted as a result. "Fine, if I’m dying, then you’re going to die as well."
The portal suddenly stabilized and grew massive to a point that the demons on the other side could easily enter without wasting any time.
Just as that happened, Ning saw a notification come through at the same time.
<Warning! Jun’Tal’s powers are being overworked. He is starting to convert all the excess water inside of his body>
Ning’s eyes widened. "How much is that?"
<Over 12 liters>
Ning gulped. Considering how much the kid could do with a single gram of water, 12 liters would be enough to put a dent in the continent. It would be disastrous.
However, Ning wasn’t immediately worried.
"System, I have an idea," he said as he immediately reached for the kid on the ground. "Can you do as I say?"
