Chapter 1959: Return to Calm
Chapter 1959: Return to Calm
The demons behind Gazakthar spread out, immediately surrounding the area. The flying demons all around also quickly landed on the side, waiting for their master’s approval.
Ning placed Jun’Tal gently on the ground and turned toward the demons.
"You should all go back," he advised. "I’m giving you the chance to return to your world before I close that."
The demon laughed.
Judging from the way the others reacted, Ning assumed he was their leader.
Perhaps even the Demon King.
The creature looked at Ning’s ordinary human-sized body, then toward the unconscious child behind him, apparently finding nothing threatening enough to justify retreating after finally gaining access to another world.
Gazakthar then raised his weapon and swung down, the axe coming first.
Ning grabbed the weapon with his two fingers, stopping the attack dead in its tracks.
The Demon King’s eyes widened in pure fear. "What... What is this?"
"Don’t bother me," Ning said as he lightly tapped on the demon’s chest. "Just go back."
One moment the Demon Lord stood in front of his army.
The next, the demon disappeared from where he stood, flying through several demons before going past the portal, back into his home world.
Silence followed.
The remaining demons stared at the place where their leader had been before turning back toward their home world.
"Go back, or I won’t hold back. Your choice."
The demons nearest the portal turned first, flying through the opening without hesitation, while those behind them immediately followed once they realized the strongest among them had been defeated before managing to complete a single attack.
Within less than a minute, the space in front of Ning was empty.
He looked toward the portal.
Without Tritus feeding it power from Jun’Tal, the opening was already beginning to collapse, so Ning gave it the push it needed.
Its edges shrank inward until the demonic landscape on the other side became nothing more than a narrow line.
Then that disappeared as well.
The world finally returned to normal.
Ning turned to Jun’Tal, watching the kid with a strange look on his face.
The boy remained unconscious, but there was nothing physically wrong with him beyond exhaustion caused by using an ability far beyond anything his body had ever experienced before.
Ning asked the System to locate his family. As it turned out, the boy lived somewhere close by.
He appeared near them shortly afterward, finding several frightened people gathered outside a damaged house while trying to understand what had happened to the town and where Jun’Tal had disappeared to.
The moment they saw the boy in Ning’s arms, they rushed toward him.
Ning allowed them to check him before speaking.
"Your son is fine, but something happened with his awakened ability. He needs time somewhere safe while we make sure he can control what he has unlocked."
"Ability?" the mother asked.
"My son has an ability?" the father asked with just as much surprise as well.
Ning asked the System what exactly the powers of the parents were, but to his surprise, they were both powerless. A young girl clung to her mother’s clothes, seemingly no older than 8 years old.
Ning asked if she had any power either.
<Her powers haven’t formed yet, but she will form them soon and awaken sometime in the future>
"How strong will she be?" Ning asked. "Considering her brother’s powers."
<Rank 8 or 9 at best. Nowhere near her brother’s level>
That wasn’t a lot considering how strong the young boy was, but there wasn’t much for Ning to consider.
Ning explained the situation to the parents as clearly as he could. Their son had awakened a dangerous ability and thus needed to be taken elsewhere so he couldn’t hurt others.
"Don’t worry. Your son is perfectly safe from his own abilities. It is the others he needs to be worried about. So, as long as he can control it, it will be fine."
Jun’Tal’s parents looked between Ning and their unconscious son, clearly unwilling to allow a stranger to simply take their child away after everything that had happened.
Ning understood, but in the end, he had to take him to save the others.
Alas, the parents had no choice but to accept his words. Ning promised he would bring their son back in a few days even if he wasn’t done learning his ability.
Once he promised as much, Ning took Jun’Tal from them.
There were many places where he could have brought the child.
He chose an island far off the coast of any civilization. It was closer to the South Pole, and thus a lot colder than normal, with snow covering most of the region.
It was far enough from every populated region that even another uncontrolled release of energy would have little chance of harming anyone, while the island itself was large enough to provide Jun’Tal with somewhere comfortable once he finally woke.
Ning placed the boy inside a simple shelter he created near the center of the island and asked the System to keep watching him.
"If his energy begins increasing again, tell me immediately."
<Understood>
Ning looked at the sleeping boy one more time.
Jun’Tal had no idea what he had nearly done, but he would have to know about it once he woke up. He wondered how the 16-year-old would handle finding out that he had the power to destroy the world.
It wouldn’t be so easy.
Ning still had unfinished business elsewhere, so he decided to take care of that.
When he returned to Cape Mistam, the summit venue was no longer functioning as anything resembling a summit.
The suppression field had been shut down, security personnel controlled most of the damaged hall, and foreign representatives had either been moved somewhere safe or gathered with their own delegations while trying to understand what had happened.
Ning found President Morstell among the Conjoran group.
Everyone turned when he appeared, most of them growing concerned. Many of the soldiers surrounded him, but Ning ignored them all, turning just to Morstell.
"Tritus is dead," Ning said just loud enough that everyone heard it.
The statement silenced everyone.
President Morstell stared at him.
"Dead?"
Ning nodded. "He’s gone. You won’t have to worry about him terrorizing the world ever again."
