Chapter 2016: A Grudge That Won’t Leave So Easily

Chapter 2016: A Grudge That Won’t Leave So Easily

-----

Once we reached Armageddon’s Divine Realm, the first thing I did was reveal her to everyone. No more hiding the truth.

Of course, Armageddon screamed and cried in terror. She was especially afraid of the heroes who had once fought against her and nearly defeated her, Aquarina’s parents included.

And she had every right to be afraid.

The moment they saw her, Shade and Nepheline unleashed their powerful Beast Auras, fused with their Spiritual Auras and Divine Sparks. They summoned their Soul Weapons and channeled every ounce of ki in their bodies, ready for battle.

"How is this possible...?!" Shade asked in disbelief. "How are you still alive?!"

"We killed you, you damn bitch! What are you doing with our daughter-in-law?!" Nepheline roared. "Did you brainwash her or something?!"

They prepared to attack immediately. My mother-in-law even assumed Armageddon had somehow brainwashed me, which, for some strange reason, I actually found funny.

"No, no! She didn’t brainwash me! Please wait!" I shouted, rushing in front of Armageddon.

My parents stared in shock and confusion at the giant ant spirit goddess behind me, their eyes filled with intrigue and wariness.

"Sylphy, what have you done now?" my mother asked. "Who is this being? Why do they hate her so much?!"

"Well, uh..." I muttered.

"Move aside, Sylphy," Shade ordered.

"Sylphy, don’t get in the way! I know you’re being controlled. This thing must have found a way in here! It’s dangerous!" Nepheline warned.

"Allan! Faylen! Get ready. This is a dangerous being on the level of the evil gods!" Shade shouted.

"What?!"

"Wait, what?!"

My parents immediately released their Magic Auras and summoned their weapons. I sighed and tried to stop them.

"Please, just calm down!"

But they weren’t listening. Shade turned into shadows and instantly appeared behind Armageddon, knife raised to strike.

CRASH!

Or at least, that was what I saw through my Heavenly Eyes’ Future Sight.

CLASH!

A split second before he could act, I leaped in front of him with Sapphire and Scarlet, intercepting his blow and surprising everyone.

"Sylphy?!"

"I’m sorry, Father-in-law, but please calm down. She means no harm! She’s my ally! My familiar!"

"F-Familiar?!"

"Sylphy, that thing is an evil god! She tried to kill everyone!" Nepheline shouted.

"And how do you expect us to win if we don’t make strong allies?!" I shot back angrily. "She did something terrible and she paid for it with her life. I rebuilt her using the soul fragments I ate and turned her into my familiar. She’s my Divine Spirit Pet now! Right?"

"P-Pet?!" Armageddon hissed, lowering her head. "Y-Yeah... I... I am..."

"But...!" Shade still looked stubborn.

I didn’t want to fight my father-in-law, but when his strike met my weapons, one clear thought struck me.

If I went all out... I could beat him.

That realization left a deep impression on me. I had grown far stronger than I ever imagined.

"Father-in-law... I love you as family. Please... let’s not do this," I said firmly. "Or you’ll force me to take you down. And it won’t be pretty."

"W-What?!" He looked shaken, eyes widening. "Sylphy, what kind of nonsense are you saying...?"

"Dad! Mom! Stop it!" Aquarina rushed forward. She used her water magic to push her mother back, then caught her father with darkness and slammed him to the ground.

CRAAASH!

"Ugh...!" Shade groaned, but he quickly stood up, brushing off the dust. "Aquarina, that was uncalled for!"

"Don’t hurt her!" Aquarina snapped. "And Sylphy, don’t hurt my dad either!"

"I wasn’t really going to do it," I sighed. "I was just trying to sound intimidating."

"Ugh, it didn’t sound that way at all!" she said, clearly upset.

"I’m sorry..." I apologized.

"Haaa..." Aquarina shook her head.

We returned to her parents, and once they had calmed down, we explained everything that had happened.

"S-So when that explosion happened during the fight... I thought we had beaten her," Shade said.

"You’re saying it didn’t kill her?!" Nepheline asked.

"No," Aquarina replied. "Armageddon is one tough bitch. After we all lost consciousness, she came to finish me off. I used the Goddess Descent ability that all Saints possess and called forth Sylphy’s divine soul."

"T-The Goddess Descent?!" my mother asked. "So Sylphy really..."

"Huhu, now things are getting even more interesting!" Master Felicia chuckled, rubbing her chin as she observed Armageddon with fascination. She had barely moved during the entire confrontation.

"I wouldn’t call myself a true goddess yet," I sighed. "I simply gained some divinity by absorbing the divine soul essence of the foes we’ve faced, the same way my ability lets me absorb soul essence from monsters to grow stronger."

"I see...!" My mother nodded, her eyes sparkling with admiration. "Even so... I’m left speechless, my dear. You’re truly amazing."

"E-Eh?" I felt embarrassed. It was rare for my mother to praise me so honestly without scolding me for being reckless.

"So at that time..." Shade said, "Sylphy finished her off?"

"Yeah, I did," I nodded. "She was extremely weakened, so it wasn’t difficult to take her down with one strong strike of my developing divine power. Afterward, she nearly evaporated completely. I absorbed her divine soul, which made me stronger, but I also realized I needed guidance to develop my divinity properly."

"Wait, so you absorbed her power!" Nepheline exclaimed. "Has anyone in this world ever slain a god and stolen their power before?"

"No..." Shade said quietly. "Sylph might be the first to ever develop such an ability."

My mother stared in shock, her eyes wide.

"What do you mean by needing help? Is that why you brought her back?" she asked.

"Armageddon was incredibly ancient. She knew everything about developing divinity and creating divine cultivation methods," I explained. "So I separated the soul fragments containing her divinity, placed them back into her charred corpse that Glutton had preserved, healed her with magic, and revived her as my Divine Spirit Familiar. She’s quite strong now, though still not at the level of the Elemental Spirit Kings you’ve contracted."

"I wouldn’t say that..." my father remarked. "Having a goddess completely loyal to you is better than any deal we have with the Spirit Kings. They’re rarely that compliant."

"And this vast Divine Realm is incredible, filled with divine treasures," my mother added. "Well... I guess you’ve truly tamed a goddess now, dear. But even so... I’m still worried about you. Is it really safe? I... I want to trust you more. I’ve realized I’ve been too distrustful for no reason. I haven’t been the best mother either. Perhaps... I’ve been misjudging you all along."
