Reversed Fate in the 70s: Marrying the Factory Director rather than Rough Man

Chapter 115

Chapter 115 : Old Lover

The letter felt heavy in Jiang Li’s hand. As she glanced at it, her attention was drawn to the address: Dashuping Production Brigade, Jiaoshan Commune, Yongfang County, and the sender was Chang Jinguang.

It felt as though her meridians were suddenly opened. Jiang Li’s eyes widened. Sun Yulian, Yulian, Chang Jinguang, wasn’t Sun Yulian the city girl Chang Jinguang had been pining for?

They were a pair of ill-fated lovers, forced to work in the countryside in separate locations, later getting married to others. Eventually, they abandoned their rural spouses and reunited in the city after being admitted to university, under the guise of pursuing true love.

This world is truly small!

Jiang Li never imagined that she would be assigned to the same dormitory as Sun Yulian.

She took the letter back to the dorm, but Sun Yulian wasn’t there. Only Chen Jing was sitting and reading a book. Upon seeing Jiang Li, she nodded at her and quickly packed up the clean aluminum lunchbox on the table, which was nearly oil- and water-free.

Chen Jing led a frugal life, relying on the school’s living subsidy and saving a portion to send back home. She typically ate rice soaked in boiled water with some dried vegetables and didn’t often go to the cafeteria with her roommates.

Jiang Li pretended not to notice and casually started a conversation with Chen Jing. “Didn’t Sun Yulian say she wasn’t married when school started?”

Chen Jing nodded. “Yes, we’re the only two married people in the dorm. Why do you suddenly ask?”

“Nothing, just curious.”

Jiang Li was certain that Sun Yulian was lying. Not only was she married, but she’d also given birth to a son in the countryside. Even her college entrance exam registration and travel expenses had been covered by her in-laws.

Just then, Sun Yulian walked in. Jiang Li looked at her with a half-smile. “Sun Yulian, there’s a letter for you from Dashuping.”

Jiang Li emphasized the name “Dashuping” as she spoke.

Sun Yulian’s face turned pale when she heard it. She immediately reached for the letter and snapped, “What are you doing with my letter? You even peeked at it. Do you have no shame?”

Chen Jing couldn’t help but speak up, “Sun Yulian, it was the dorm manager who asked Jiang Li to bring the letter. Your words are too harsh.”

Jiang Li smiled and said, “It’s okay. I’ll just think of it as a dog bite.”

“But what a coincidence! My hometown is also in the Dashuping Production Brigade, Jiaoshan Commune, Yongfang County! Who sent you this letter? Maybe I know him.”

Sun Yulian’s face lost all color, and her legs grew weak, almost causing her to collapse. She stared at Jiang Li in fear and panic. How could this be? Did Jiang Li know Brother Jin?

Chen Jing, seeing Sun Yulian’s distressed expression, asked, “Are you okay?”

Sun Yulian pushed away Chen Jing’s hand, “I don’t need your help. You’re all in on this, teaming up to tease me.”

“What you’re saying is strange. What did we tease you about? Could it be that the person you’re communicating with is your secret lover, the one you can’t let others know about?”

At this, Sun Yulian stood up and walked toward the window, as if preparing for a confrontation. “I’ll die if you keep throwing dirt on me.”

“Sun Yulian, I advise you not to jump, really. There’s no one here to stop you. It would be terrible if you fell. We’re on the third floor, it’s neither too high nor too low. It’d be a blessing if you died from the fall. But if you fall and end up paralyzed, you’ll be neither dead nor alive for the rest of your life. That would be truly troublesome, don’t you think?”

These words made Sun Yulian so angry that she didn’t know whether to pull her hands away from the window or keep them there.

She turned to Jiang Li and said, “Jiang Li, how did I offend you that you have to treat me like this?”

Jiang Li stood up and said, “You were the one who spread rumors about me at school, right? You said I was showing off, but in reality, I was so poor that I had to make a living by running a stall. Didn’t you say that?”

“Don’t deny it too quickly. You know whether you said it or not.”

Jiang Li took two steps forward and lowered her voice. “Sun Yulian, don’t mess with me, or I’ll expose that you’re married with children but still pretending to be single.”

“Tell everyone that you dumped the country boy who saved money for your tuition, abandoned your husband and children, and wanted to reunite with your old lover. Then we’ll see whether your reputation gets ruined or mine,” Jiang Li said, her voice cold.

Sun Yulian collapsed onto the stool by the window sill, barely able to breathe. She bit her lip, tears streaming down her face as she looked at Jiang Li. With a heavy nod, she whispered so softly it was almost inaudible, “I won’t.”

The letter she had been holding was crumpled into a ball, torn to pieces, and thrown into the trash can, her tears mixing with the paper.

As fate would have it, Jiang Li saw the letter again when she returned from her self-study session.

In the original story, the two star-crossed lovers, once devoted to each other until death, now stood on opposite sides. One had been accepted into university, while the other remained stuck in the countryside for reasons unknown. Their relationship had cracked, and it was only a matter of time before they reached a point of no return.

A man with slicked-back hair and a medium build passed by Jiang Li, glancing at her with a surprised look in his eyes.

When Jiang Li looked at him, he raised his arm and shook the watch on his wrist, the sound of his leather shoes squeaking on the floor.

He was about to speak to Jiang Li when he was interrupted by a sweet voice. “Comrade Yu, thank you for delivering the book so late. It’s really hard work.”

Sun Yulian had clearly dressed up for the occasion, wearing a flowing, fresh, and pleasant-looking dress. Yu Qianjin liked her very much. She was feminine, gentle, obedient, and presentable.

But none of that compared to the stunning woman he had just glimpsed. Although she looked cold as ice, her beauty was dazzling, enough to captivate anyone’s heart.

Yu Qianjin didn’t respond to Sun Yulian’s thanks but instead asked, “Do you know the girl who just passed by? I think she’s from your dormitory.”

Sun Yulian followed his gaze and recognized the figure from behind, her teeth gritting in anger. It was Jiang Li again.

Jealousy surged through her, knowing full well that Yu Qianjin was interested in Jiang Li. “I know her. She’s from our dorm, and she’s already married.”

Yu Qianjin looked disappointed, “Why is she getting married so early?”

Yu Qianjin came from a wealthy family and was one of the most promising suitors she had encountered. Sun Yulian couldn’t afford to turn hostile now. She suppressed her anger and handed him a coat. “This is the one you lent me last time. I washed it. Thank you.”
