Chapter 34
Chapter 34
Miss Fang?
Zhuo Zhiwei heard the words and unconsciously furrowed her brows. She looked up at He Qingqi, then glanced at the door.
The door creaked open fully, and a woman entered wearing a white blouse and a black A-line skirt. Her outfit was simple yet elegant, and the way she walked in high heels exuded an undeniable assertiveness.
Her back was straight, and her facial expression carried a hint of aloofness and indifference. Her entire demeanor radiated elegance and pride. Her pale skin made the red on her lips appear even more striking, like a red plum blossom on a snowy mountain, breathtakingly beautiful.
This demeanor looked familiar, and so did the appearance.
Zhuo Zhiwei stared intently, her face as cold and solemn as ever, but there was a flash of hostility in her eyes.
So this was the person Qingqi once liked.
Fang Xuanyao sensed the other person’s gaze, and a hint of mockery appeared in her eyes. A disdainful sneer spread across her face, and she didn’t spare Zhuo Zhiwei even a glance. She bent slightly and said, “Good evening, Grandpa and Grandma, Uncle He, and Qingzhou.”
“You’re here, Xuanyao. We were just wondering who it could be.”
Fang Xuanyao straightened up and smiled. When her gaze met He Qingqi’s, her eyes softened, like a lake filled with tender emotions in winter. “Qingqi,” she called softly.
Qingqi… Zhuo Zhiwei’s brows furrowed tighter, and her eyes grew colder. Under the table, her hand clenched into a fist. She felt uneasy, as if someone was vying for something she owned, and she was also enraged, sensing that someone significant to her was suffering mistreatment.
What right did this person have to call her that? Was it because she was impatient with He Qingqi? Or was it because she was deceiving He Qingqi’s feelings?
“How have you been recently?”
He Qingqi maintained a low profile, her long hair concealing her expression. She bit her chopsticks, and her eyes were full of coldness when she heard the familiar address.
It was truly disgusting. Was it amusing? In her previous life, Fang Xuanyao had called her Qingqi in front of others, but at home, when they were alone, she was just He Qingqi.
He Qingqi secretly rolled her eyes, just as Zhuo Zhiwei, who was stealing glances at her, noticed. Zhuo Zhiwei was momentarily stunned, feeling an unexpected sense of schadenfreude.
“Pretty good,” He Qingqi said, struggling to suppress her anger. She forced a smile and looked up, giving Fang Xuanyao a faint smile.
The smile didn’t reach her eyes.
She couldn’t pretend to be as amiable as Fang Xuanyao, nor could she completely tear off her facade.
They were married, each holding a marriage certificate. The priority was to stabilize Fang Xuanyao; she couldn’t let her family know about this, or else it would be difficult to escape if Fang Xuanyao turned the tables on her.
She had to engage in a charade with her.
Fang Xuanyao, who did not notice He Qingqi’s abnormality from a distance, was instead pleased by her brilliant smile.
He Qingqi blinked her big eyes and asked knowingly, “Sister Xuanyao, is there something you need?”
Fang Xuanyao was momentarily stunned by He Qingqi’s distant tone. If He Qingqi had directed it at an ordinary friend, it would make sense, but she was He Qingqi’s newlywed wife. She lowered her head, contemplating for a moment before suddenly realizing the situation.
Her little peacock probably hadn’t told her family about their relationship yet. After all, they had secretly obtained their marriage certificates. Although the little peacock seemed proud and self-centered, she actually cared a lot about her family. Moreover… Fang Xuanyao glanced at Zhuo Zhiwei.
There was an outsider here.
“I just thought I hadn’t seen you in a while and came to visit.”
He Qingqi sneered inwardly, not believing a word, but she kept smiling and nodded just as Grandpa He invited, “Xuanyao, have you eaten? Qingqi came home today, and we made a big meal. Why don’t you stay and eat something?”
Fang Xuanyao pondered for a moment. “Sure, thank you.”
“No need to thank us; we’re all family,” Grandpa He said it with a smile.
“Xiao Zhang,” Grandpa He waved at Aunt Zhang, “Add another set of utensils!”
At the He house, Fang Xuanyao took off her high heels, put on her designated slippers, and walked to the dining table.
He Qingzhou, knowing his sister liked Fang Xuanyao, stood up like a gentleman. “Xuanyao, sit here next to Qingqi.”
Under normal circumstances, He Qingqi would silently give He Qingzhou a thumbs-up in her heart. However, now she was furious and shot He Qingzhou a sharp glare. If she had known, she wouldn’t have let He Qingzhou sit there.
He Qingzhou, bewildered by the unwarranted glare, thought, “???”
His mind was full of questions. What now? Everything was fine just a moment ago.
He Qingqi couldn’t help but stiffen her face while Fang Xuanyao was seated. A physiological shiver followed as she recalled dying in Fang Xuanyao’s hands, even if it was an accident.
He Qingqi didn’t want to die; she wanted to change the outcome of her previous life. So whenever she saw Fang Xuanyao, she had only one thought: to escape from her.
But now they were already married, and this person had come to the door.
What should she do?
For a moment, He Qingqi felt cold all over, her hands and feet icy. Suddenly, a pair of not-so-warm hands gently held her left hand, making it even colder than hers.
He Qingqi’s heart trembled, and she looked up, meeting the beautiful eyes that had appeared in her dreams. The pupils reflected the dim light, sparkling like a starry river, dazzling. She was momentarily dazed, and then she saw that person giving her a comforting smile.
The smile was shallow, but on that peerless face, it seemed to shine brightly, lighting up the room and instantly calming He Qingqi’s restless heart. She felt a sense of peace.
Yet she also felt a new kind of restlessness, completely different from before.
He Qingqi’s throat tightened, and her heart raced. She wanted to know…
What would it be like if Zhuo Zhiwei referred to her as Qingqi? That cold voice, that indifferent face, and those deep-sea-like eyes…
He Qingqi, momentarily stunned, quickly shook her head, dismissing the untrustworthy thought. Zhiwei was her good friend; how could she think like this? Was she having a midlife crisis?
He Qingqi frowned, suspicious of her own thoughts.
Bah! What kind of midlife crisis was this? In her previous life, she had already divorced Fang Xuanyao. Even if she had inappropriate thoughts about Zhiwei, it wouldn’t be like having an affair.
Aside from that, how could she have inappropriate thoughts about her friend? Zhiwei trusted her so much… It must be because Zhiwei was just too beautiful!
He Qingqi glanced up at Zhuo Zhiwei and couldn’t help but feel her ears turning red. She swiftly averted her gaze, grasped her chopsticks with her right hand, and feigned concentration on her meal.
She wondered if she was imagining things, but she felt that Zhuo Zhiwei’s beautiful face seemed to carry a different kind of charm, though she couldn’t pinpoint what it was.
And that hand still rested against He Qingqi’s palm.
It gently squeezed.
Zhuo Zhiwei, left-handed, mimicked He Qingqi’s actions, picking up her chopsticks to eat.
Their hands remained intertwined beneath the table.
Zhuo Zhiwei didn’t know why He Qingqi wouldn’t speak out or why she was playing along with Fang Xuanyao, but she trusted He Qingqi, believing she could handle everything while protecting herself.
All she could do was offer her support, letting her know that there was always someone in the world who understood her.
Even though He Qingqi’s smile at Fang Xuanyao caused some discomfort,
Perhaps it was for her friend’s sake. Zhuo Zhiwei thought.
He Qingqi awkwardly kept her head down, occasionally stealing glances at the girl sitting upright next to her. Holding that soft hand, He Qingqi’s grasp grew cold and sweaty.
Zhuo Zhiwei tilted her head, her clear eyes revealing a bit of confusion.
Why was He Qingqi so afraid of this person?
She couldn’t help but grip her hand tighter.
Fang Xuanyao looked at He Qingqi several times but never got the response she expected. She was puzzled, not understanding what was going on.
Her little peacock usually loved to secretly watch her. Usually, whenever she turned around, she would see He Qingqi looking at her with bright, admiring eyes.
What was going on today?
The He family didn’t have a strict no-talking-at-the-table rule. After a few bites, Grandpa He started the conversation:
“Xuanyao, how are you doing at the company? Are you adjusting well?”
Fang Xuanyao paused, pushing aside her earlier confusion, and smiled politely. “I’m doing well.”
“That’s good,” Grandpa He said it kindly. “If you have any problems, you can go to your Uncle He or Qingzhou. We’re all family; there’s no need to be formal.”
“I will. Thank you, Grandpa.” Fang Xuanyao replied with a touch of sweetness.
He Qingqi paused, even though she had learned from Fang Xuanyao a few days ago that she was working at He Corporation. Hearing Grandpa He mentioned that it still made her feel anxious.
She couldn’t help but feel thankful that in her past life, her father and He Qingzhou were strong enough to prevent Fang Xuanyao and those traitors from succeeding. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to rest in peace, even in death.
“There’s no need for me,” He Qingzhou said, smiling slightly at Fang Xuanyao. “Earlier, Xuanyao’s supervisor praised her for me.”
He then turned to Grandpa. He said, “Grandpa, you worry too much. Xuanyao is very capable.”
“That’s good,” Grandpa He sighed. “Back in the day, I was very close with that old fellow from the Fang family. Now…”
“Never mind,” Grandpa He shook his head, his tone filled with regret. “Let’s not talk about it.”
How could he not feel regret?
Fang Xuanyao’s grandfather was younger than Grandpa. He had lived for a few years but had passed away early. He left behind two sons, one of whom was his brother’s orphaned child. The other, his biological son, died in a car accident when his daughter was just nine years old.
And it had something to do with that ingrate they raised.
Grandpa He narrowed his eyes. Fortunately, the Fang family had avenged their grievances, even though it came at a cost to Fang Xuanyao.
But that didn’t matter. Grandpa He breathed a sigh of relief. His property documents were ready for transfer. Although he couldn’t move the He Corporation shares, he would try to make up for Fang Xuanyao’s losses. Besides, over the past ten years, Fang Xuanyao’s eldest brother has ruined the Fang family, leaving them with little money.
Despite the nature of business, the Fang family’s bankruptcy was partially caused by the He family. He prided himself on being honorable, and he couldn’t let this matter tarnish his reputation.
Still, he needed to wait and see if Qingqi had any feelings left for Fang Xuanyao.
If the two children were together, he could take advantage of the situation. Even if they had conflicts later, Fang Xuanyao would still treat Qingqi well out of consideration for the He family.
Grandpa He glanced at Fang Xuanyao, who was eating seriously and feeling a bit emotional. He had wondered how to explain things to her when she returned to China, hoping not to damage the relationship between the two families.
It seemed he had worried too much. This child probably knew long ago.
But it was hard on her. Living with her enemies for so many years, pretending to be ignorant while acting out a play of familial love, was difficult for her.
She probably left back then, partly because of this.
