Chapter 35
Chapter 35
He Qingqi quickly finished her dinner, feeling as if she were sitting on pins and needles, eager to escape the scene.
However, she couldn’t leave Zhuo Zhiwei alone here. After all, Zhuo Zhiwei was new to this place and only knew her. Furthermore, Fang Xuanyao, who had ill intentions, was also present.
In her previous life, Fang Xuanyao had harmed not only her but also Zhuo Zhiwei.
As a conscientious idol, Zhuo Zhiwei ate sparingly to maintain her weight, so He Qingqi didn’t have to wait long. When she noticed Zhuo Zhiwei putting down her chopsticks and wiping her mouth with a napkin, He Qingqi, knowing her well, sensed it was over and felt a surge of joy.
“Finished eating?”
Zhuo Zhiwei nodded lightly.
He Qingqi was satisfied. “Grandpa, Grandma, Zhiwei, and I are done eating. We’ll head upstairs first.”
“Wait, Qingqi,” Grandpa He exclaimed, startled. “Your sister Xuanyao is here; won’t you spend more time with her?”
He Qingqi’s face darkened instantly. She cast a cautious glance at Fang Xuanyao, who remained expressionless, and exhaled a breath of relief.
Indeed, Fang Xuanyao probably wished for her to leave quickly to avoid having to put on an act.
She suddenly felt inexplicably guilty.
Sneaking a look at Zhuo Zhiwei, He Qingqi saw her face, cold as ice. Although Zhuo Zhiwei usually maintained a serious demeanor, it was rare to see her radiate such coldness.
Is she angry? He Qingqi felt like crying without tears. Grandpa, you’ve put me in a tough spot!
Zhiwei probably believes I’m not good because I’m still in a relationship with my ex.
But she had no choice. If she confronted Fang Xuanyao in front of the whole family today, who knew what kind of trouble would ensue?
She’d have to arrange another day to meet Fang Xuanyao.
He Qingqi felt deeply wronged and now only wanted to quickly pull Zhuo Zhiwei away and explain everything to her.
She stood up abruptly, causing her chair to wobble. She hadn’t let go of Zhuo Zhiwei’s hand, and with a gentle tug, she pulled her up.
“Oh, it’s nothing,” she said nonchalantly, her tone full of youthful vigor. “I can see Xuanyao at any time… Zhiwei isn’t familiar with this place, so I need to show her around.”
“Alright, alright, we won’t talk any more. We’re going upstairs to tidy up.”
With long strides, He Qingqi quickly dashed up to the second floor.
“This child,” Grandpa He muttered, bewildered by He Qingqi’s behavior.
Hadn’t she always put Fang Xuanyao first?
He mumbled, “How did things change so suddenly?”
Grandma He glared at him and said, “I told you not to meddle in the affairs of the young. Who knows how their affairs will unfold?”
Grandpa He, his face as dark as the bottom of a pot, felt chastised. Our Qingqi has always been so resolute. She liked Xuanyao for five or six years, and now it changed just like that?
Grandma He rolled her eyes and ignored him.
Fang Xuanyao stopped her chopsticks and looked expressionlessly in the direction He Qingqi had left, biting her lip. A sudden wave of panic surged in her heart.
It seemed like things were different.
Is it because of Zhuo Zhiwei?
She wanted to put down her chopsticks and chase after them, but she knew He Qingqi’s temperament. In their past lives, even though He Qingqi was always compliant, if Fang Xuanyao did something she hated, He Qingqi would still lose her temper, giving her the cold shoulder for a day or two.
Couples arguing is normal and sometimes even a good way to strengthen the relationship, especially when one partner is a prideful and fiery Leo like He Qingqi.
Unfortunately, she had never regarded He Qingqi as a partner, merely watching coldly from the sidelines. He Qingqi cared too much, ultimately humbling her proud self to offer her an out.
And she, arrogantly, disdainfully, took it. With a cold snort.
He Qingqi’s pride was riddled with wounds.
After bowing her head too many times and facing too much cold treatment, He Qingqi finally became disheartened and gave up on their marriage.
In the end, it was her own doing.
At that time, she was still He Qingqi’s beloved. But now? Fang Xuanyao didn’t dare gamble that if He Qingqi hated her for this, she would…
Fang Xuanyao’s pupils flashed with panic.
With a “bang,” the door closed.
She felt as though a piece was missing from her heart.
Listening to the sounds outside, He Qingqi carefully locked the door and sat on her bed, exhaling a deep breath of relief.
“Finally over.” Her eyes and brows relaxed, and she smiled at Zhuo Zhiwei in a fawning manner.
Zhuo Zhiwei raised an eyebrow, crossed her arms, and leaned against the desk, scrutinizing He Qingqi with an unusually sharp gaze, unlike her usual gentle demeanor. “Weren’t you just calling Xuanyao ‘sister’ a moment ago?”
The sourness in her tone surprised even Zhuo Zhiwei.
Has her possessiveness over her friend reached such a level? Zhuo Zhiwei was shocked, and something flashed through her mind, but she couldn’t grasp it.
Luckily, He Qingqi didn’t find anything amiss, awkwardly touching her nose and pleading, “Zhiwei, don’t mock me. I had no choice.”
She said, half-jokingly, “I didn’t know she’d come today. It was so sudden. Besides, with her good relationship with my family, I couldn’t just say it in front of everyone. It would have been too awkward.”
“And without evidence, right? If I say something suddenly, someone has to believe it.”
Zhuo Zhiwei already believed her, but for some reason, she blurted out, “Maybe you still have feelings for her.” After saying that, she cast a suspicious glance at He Qingqi.
“Oh, that’s really not the case.” He Qingqi, now anxious, desperately tried to distance herself from Fang Xuanyao, a fleeting thought crossing her mind.
If I had known, I wouldn’t have told her…
“Alright, alright.” Zhuo Zhiwei felt embarrassed yet touched by He Qingqi’s lengthy explanation.
She curved her lips into a smile and resumed her usual calm and gentle demeanor, comforting her, “I was just joking.”
However, her heart was not as tranquil. She couldn’t help but feel puzzled; she hadn’t been like this before. It seemed that whenever she was around He Qingqi, she wasn’t herself.
Is this the difference between a friend and a best friend? Zhuo Zhiwei was curious.
He Qingqi breathed a sigh of relief. “You scared me. Let’s quickly gear up and get out of here before we run into Fang Xuanyao again.” She crouched down, pulling out a drawer from under the bed.
In there, she kept masks, goggles, alcohol, and other items.
Her family replaced these items every year, even if they didn’t use them; they always kept some at home.
She rummaged through and took out a pack of black disposable masks, then walked over to Zhuo Zhiwei, opening a door and stepping into what appeared to be a walk-in closet filled with clothes, hats, shoes, and watches.
Zhuo Zhiwei’s eyes flashed with surprise, and she heard He Qingqi call her, “Zhiwei, come and see which hat you like.”
Zhuo Zhiwei randomly picked a black one. Seeing the row of watches, she couldn’t help but smile and tease, “So many watches, Qingqi. No wonder Jinghan calls you a tycoon.”
“Do you like them?” He Qingqi’s eyes sparkled as she raised an eyebrow and smiled.
She crouched down and picked up each watch in turn, showing them to Zhuo Zhiwei. “Which one do you like? I’ll give it to you. This one, this one, or this one?”
Zhuo Zhiwei didn’t answer her but asked, “There are at least forty watches here, right?”
“Thirty-nine,” He Qingqi replied with a smile. “Most were given to me by my grandparents, parents, and He Qingzhou, and a few by friends.”
She picked up one watch and said, “This one is particularly meaningful. Didn’t Chai Xu debut last year? This was the first gift he bought me with his first salary.”
“Though it was only 300,000 yuan, I really like it.”
Zhuo Zhiwei couldn’t help but smile at her casual declaration of wealth. “Only, hmm?”
“Ah?” He Qingqi felt a bit embarrassed. “Sorry, sorry.”
Young people like to show off, and although He Qingqi was no longer a teenager, she reverted to her younger self around Zhuo Zhiwei, speaking more cheerfully. Even though she didn’t think there was much to show off, she still wanted to mention it to Zhuo Zhiwei.
She wanted to see that beautiful face show a look of surprise.
With a hint of pride on her face that she couldn’t suppress, she leaned closer to Zhuo Zhiwei, whispering conspiratorially, “Zhiwei, I have a secret to tell you.”
“A secret?” Zhuo Zhiwei became interested and took a small step forward, saying, “Go on.”
He Qingqi pursed her lips, leaned in close to Zhuo Zhiwei’s ear, and sniffed subtly before whispering, “The training building we use… my dad has transferred it to me.”
“!!!”
Even someone as calm as Zhuo Zhiwei couldn’t stay indifferent. She straightened up, looking at He Qingqi with a touch of astonishment in her eyes.
“Right? Isn’t it shocking? When I saw the transfer document, I thought He Dongche had lost his mind.”
“When did this happen?”
“Well…” He Qingqi paused and then gave a precise time: “The day after we called our families.”
Zhuo Zhiwei pondered for a moment, her fingers moving unconsciously. “Does Jinghan know?”
He Qingqi found it puzzling and wondered, “Of course not. Why would I tell her for no reason? Everyone knows I’m wealthy; there’s no need to flaunt it.”
Hearing this, Zhuo Zhiwei couldn’t help but smile slightly, quickly suppressing it and pretending to be nonchalant as she turned around. “Let’s pack up and leave quickly so we don’t run into Fang Xuanyao.”
He Qingqi, startled, quickly agreed, “Yes, yes, let’s go.”
Zhuo Zhiwei pursed her lips, a hint of secret joy flashing in her eyes. She lightly coughed and put on the hat and mask that He Qingqi had given her.
He Qingqi went to the chairman and manager’s room, put on their harnesses, and led them downstairs, one in each hand.
“You take your time eating. We’ll walk the dogs first,” He Qingqi said as she walked, looking back. “Aunt Zhang! I’m walking the dogs!”
A voice called out from the kitchen, “Got it, I know.”
He Qingqi glanced at Fang Xuanyao’s position, politely smiling. “Xuanyao, we’re heading out.”
Fang Xuanyao stared intently at her wrist, her gaze sharp.
“Xuanyao?” He Qingzhou waved a hand in front of her face.
“Hmm?” Fang Xuanyao snapped back to reality, giving a faint smile and casting a glance at Zhuo Zhiwei.
She narrowed her eyes slightly and said softly, “Alright, have fun.”
Her nails dug into her flesh.
No wonder it looked familiar—it was that watch.
Zhuo Zhiwei.
