Chapter 41
Chapter 41
Before her rebirth, He Qingqi was considered quite an experienced driver, with a decade of driving under her belt. Although she was not professional, her driving was steady.
She obeyed traffic rules, remained cautious and focused, fastened her seatbelt, and kept both hands on the steering wheel, making her seem reliable.
Today, the weather was nice, and the bright light shining through the glass illuminated He Qingqi’s profile, making her skin look like creamy jade and her features as if painted.
Zhuo Zhiwei secretly observed her, a smile tugging at her lips, revealing a small sliver of teeth.
In a flash, her gaze settled on He Qingqi’s left wrist, where a white dial and a black strap watch rested. The dial wasn’t large, but it was evidently a men’s watch, giving He Qingqi’s wrist an elegant, neutral vibe.
It looked familiar.
For more than three months at Oushi, He Qingqi had been wearing this watch.
Zhuo Zhiwei had initially thought it was because there was no other option inside, but now that they were both out on parole…
As soon as the car stopped, intuition struck her.
Zhuo Zhiwei pursed her lips and asked, “Qingqi, you seem to always wear this watch. Does it have any special meaning?”
He Qingqi, ready to unfasten her seatbelt, looked down at the watch. She paused for a moment before smiling with a touch of melancholy. “Yes, it’s the last birthday gift my mom bought for my dad.”
She sighed softly. “Unfortunately, she never got to give it to him. My brother came home instead. Later, my grandmother gave it to me as a keepsake. I’ve been wearing it for… five years now.”
He Qingqi silently swallowed the words “fifteen years.”
Zhuo Zhiwei’s eyes softened, and she silently grasped He Qingqi’s right hand.
Her heart felt like it was being gnawed by tiny insects, spreading a subtle ache and bitterness. The emotion that arose was one of heartbreak, mingled with a sense of shared suffering.
In some ways, they were eerily similar. Before that dramatic doorstep encounter, Zhuo Zhiwei had always believed she lost her father in her childhood, and their emotions were likely similar.
Because she understood, she felt even more pain for the girl beside her.
He Qingqi turned her head, catching Zhuo Zhiwei’s emotion through her clear eyes, and couldn’t help but raise her eyebrows, feeling somewhat helpless.
“Alright, it’s nothing.”
She looked at the watch, fiddled with it, then took Zhuo Zhiwei’s wrist and placed it in her palm.
“Here, it’s for you.”
The girl’s voice was clear and slightly childish.
Zhuo Zhiwei was stunned, feeling the weight in her palm, still warm from He Qingqi’s wrist.
“Wearing this watch reminded me of my mom, partly,” He Qingqi glanced aside, a bit embarrassed, “but also to provoke my dad and brother.”
“In fact, my dad has been living off those memories all these years. He really loved my mom, and seeing that pool of red brought him a lot of guilt.”
“He can’t forget it, and neither can my brother.”
“Wearing this watch constantly reminded them of what happened, though neither of them was really at fault.”
He Qingqi smiled softly, looking relieved. “It’s my fault.”
“So, to help them let go of the burden, will you accept it?”
The girl’s eyes were bright and smiling, with a momentary firmness and gentle sincerity that seemed to dispel all the world’s gloom.
Zhuo Zhiwei’s heart skipped a beat. Bathed in the afternoon sunlight, the watch in her palm warmed her usually cold face with a layer of warmth.
Her heart raced.
But she hesitated slightly. “But it’s too precious.”
“Trust me, it’s not precious at all.” He Qingqi was utterly sincere: “Think about that building; this watch isn’t worth even one percent of my net worth.”
An invisible display of wealth.
Zhuo Zhiwei’s last bit of hesitation vanished. This was a gift from He Qingqi. Moreover, she was right. Zhuo Zhiwei hypnotized herself, thinking a few million was indeed nothing.
Pah, self-hypnosis failed.
However, she believed she could earn it soon.
She tightened her grip before loosening it and putting the watch on her wrist.
Her tone was firm: “I will take good care of it.”
He Qingqi smiled and nodded. “Mm.”
The path once gone astray should now be corrected, including her relationship with her father, brother, and Fang Xuanyao. It all began with this watch.
She unfastened her seatbelt and said, “Alright, let’s get out.”
…
Originally, He Qingqi planned to tattoo a date on her middle finger, just like in her past life. But Zhuo Zhiwei chose a beautiful, unique design—a feather with small geese on it—that made He Qingqi’s heart itch.
So she steeled herself and had a small half-wing tattooed on her shoulder blade.
It didn’t hurt; it just itched a bit.
Zhuo Zhiwei stood in front of the mirror, staring at the originally scary, twisted two vertical lines and one horizontal line that had transformed into a feather. She was slightly dazed.
It seemed to cover up her rotten memories.
She reached out, her fingertips gently touching the design, feeling the cling wrap beneath.
He Qingqi appeared from behind, meeting her in the mirror.
“How is it?” she asked, looking at the girl in the mirror.
He Qingqi chuckled softly. “It’s beautiful.” Her tone was utterly sincere.
She shyly smiled, her gaze returning to the feather and the small geese.
Cloud Crane.
She had tattooed a “goose” clo.”
Sneaking a glance at He Qingqi in the mirror, it seemed she hadn’t noticed at all.
She felt a bit happy and a bit disappointed.
Doubt crept in about her judgment last night. Did this person really have feelings for her? Or was she just imagining things? Otherwise, why hadn’t she noticed such an obvious signal?
Zhuo Zhiwei frowned, lost in thought.
He Qingqi tilted her head, puzzled by Zhuo Zhiwei’s sudden low mood, especially when she had been happy just moments ago.
After pondering, her eyes showed concern. Maybe she was thinking about the past again.
She pursed her lips and suddenly thought of a good place:
“There’s a mall nearby, and you didn’t eat much this morning. Shall we get something to eat?”
Zhuo Zhiwei didn’t think much; her ears drooped slightly, and she nodded dejectedly.
This mall was one that He Qingqi often visited. In the lobby, He Qingqi suddenly spotted the Bailidu counter, her eyes brightening, and she pulled Zhuo Zhiwei over.
“Let’s check it out first!”
Though feeling low, seeing those bright eyes warmed Zhuo Zhiwei’s heart, so she pursed her lips and nodded.
“Could you please give me a bottle of Super Cedar?”
For some reason, the sales associate’s expression seemed odd, as if she wanted to say something. He Qingqi didn’t think much, just felt excited.
After getting the bottle, He Qingqi sprayed a bit on her wrist, sniffed it, and smiled with satisfaction.
It was indeed that scent.
Zhuo Zhiwei’s scent. From the top note to the base note, high mountain cedar mingled with romance.
He Qingqi decisively swiped her card to pay.
Finally, the sales associate couldn’t contain her excitement: “Qingqi and Weiwei, I’m a fan! Could you sign something for me?”
He Qingqi: “???”
Zhuo Zhiwei: “???”
Oops.
He Qingqi was startled, realizing the trouble.
The mall was filled with young people, who now recognized them and started flocking to Bailidu in waves.
He Qingqi panicked, scanning around and discovering that Bailidu’s back door led outside the mall, so she grabbed Zhuo Zhiwei and ran. Halfway through, she realized she had forgotten the Super Cedar.
She ran back to get it.
After a chaotic scramble, He Qingqi and Zhuo Zhiwei finally sat back in He Qingqi’s beloved car and drove away.
The ponytail He Qingqi had tied up in the morning was now hanging loose and messy.
He Qingqi took a deep breath and said, “That was a misstep.”
The half-year abroad and her participation in Oushi had made her carefree and free, causing her to forget that she was somewhat of a celebrity.
She recalled that although she didn’t make her debut in her previous life, the end of Oushi brought her a plethora of fans, significantly disrupting her life.
Especially now, she had debuted, and next to her was the more eye-catching Zhuo Zhiwei.
It seemed she needed to be more careful.
Also, where were the bodyguards?
He Qingqi frowned, thinking.
She had been too carefree lately.
Leaving home without bodyguards.
Zhuo Zhiwei blinked slowly, clearly still in shock.
“That was crazy,” she remarked.
Then she turned and asked, “Qingqi, have you ever been a fan of anyone?”
He Qingqi looked at her and said, “No.”
She added inwardly, “Fans have chased me.”
Back then, she was somewhat talented, and with a decent face, many wanted to be more than friends with her.
Even if not for romantic reasons, her family background made everyone treat her kindly.
Zhuo Zhiwei, on the other hand, was consistently indifferent, neither intimate nor remote.
When thinking of Zhuo Zhiwei from her past life, He Qingqi felt a bit uncomfortable, but then looked at the well-behaved Zhuo Zhiwei beside her and felt at ease.
This person would be her best friend in this life! She, like Sun Wukong, could not break free from the clutches of Buddha.
The little lion raised her head slightly, feeling proud.
Zhuo Zhiwei glanced at her, puzzled by her little lion’s apparent happiness, sensing that her fur was joyfully fluffy.
He Qingqi established a route to Yijingyuan and spoke to Zhuo Zhiwei with a hint of apology.
“Sorry, Zhiwei, it was my oversight, making you hungry.”
“It’s alright.” Zhuo Zhiwei looked at her helplessly.
“I didn’t expect it either. It’s not your fault.”
They were close to Yijingyuan, and they arrived quickly.
Before getting out of the car, He Qingqi unfastened her seatbelt but didn’t get out immediately. Zhuo Zhiwei looked over curiously and saw her blushing slightly, shyly pursing her lips and handing Zhuo Zhiwei the perfume she bought earlier. “Zhiwei, it’s for you.”
Zhuo Zhiwei was surprised. “For me?”
“Yes.” He Qingqi smiled. “Do you remember the last time we performed ‘Last’?”
Zhuo Zhiwei smiled, seemingly reminiscing.
That was probably the turning point in their relationship. Prior to that, He Qingqi was special to her, but only as a lifesaver.
But after that, she truly considered He Qingqi to be part of her inner circle.
And in that circle, there was only He Qingqi besides herself.
So, falling for her was inevitable.
Memories dispelled the shadow in her heart, and Zhuo Zhiwei momentarily forgot her earlier doubts. Her eyes sparkled, and though the smile was fleeting, it was genuine. She nodded. “I remember.”
He Qingqi also remembered.
Although it had been a long time, it felt like yesterday. She recalled every detail vividly, as if it were a movie playing slowly in her mind.
“Back then, you helped me with the in-ear monitor, remember? You were… so beautiful.” He Qingqi shyly looked away.
She was always straightforward with compliments, but today she felt her face burning for some reason.
Everyone on Oushi agreed on this.
A hint of doubt emerged in her heart but quickly vanished.
She continued shyly, “I suddenly thought of this perfume and felt it suited you well.”
Zhuo Zhiwei suddenly looked at her, and He Qingqi seemed to see a glimmer in her black gem-like eyes, filled with all her emotions.
She couldn’t see clearly, but it made her unexpectedly happy.
Zhuo Zhiwei took the bag, all previous worries vanishing.
Her eyes softened, and she sighed softly.
Whether I liked it or not, it didn’t matter.
If they liked each other, they would be together. If not, she would pursue and please her, treating her as the queen of her emotional world. Being together would be beneficial to her; if they weren’t together, at least she would have made an effort.
At least, there was someone who didn’t care about her past and treated her sincerely.
In the end, Zhuo Zhiwei chuckled softly and said, “Thank you.”
