Running Over The Head Of My Ex [Rebirth]

Chapter 64

Chapter 64

After getting into the car, He Qingqi blinked her slightly sore eyes and covered her mouth to stifle a yawn, then leaned back against the seat.

Chai Xu, ever the sycophant, leaned in closer to her and asked with concern, “Qingqi, are you tired?”

He Qingqi rolled her eyes at him in response, her look clearly saying, “Isn’t it obvious?”

This was just a normal physiological reaction for her—whenever she got into a car and had nothing to do, she’d feel like taking a nap.

Chai Xu, who had grown up with her, knew this well. He wasn’t fazed by her attitude and, as if bravely sacrificing himself, patted his shoulder and offered, “Qingqi, want to lean on my shoulder?”

He Qingqi pursed her lips, relaxed her body, but leaned in the opposite direction, her head hitting the window with a thud as she closed her eyes slightly.

She heard Chai Xu mutter quietly, “He has an iron head.”

He Qingqi cracked open one eye and stared at him, making Chai Xu instantly shut up and become as quiet as a mouse.

After a moment, He Qingqi unconsciously placed her hand on her stomach and frowned slightly before looking at Chai Xu. “Do you have any food?”

Chai Xu blinked, hesitated for a moment, but eventually rummaged through his bag and pulled out a loaf of bread with a pained expression. “I was saving this for tomorrow morning.”

Gritting his teeth and closing his eyes, he turned his head away and handed the bread to He Qingqi with a look of deep sacrifice. “Here.”

He Qingqi was speechless. Was it really that serious?

She reached out to grab the bread but couldn’t pull it away. Her expression changed as she tried again and again.

He Qingqi’s face darkened, and she warned with suppressed anger, “Chai Xu…”

Sensing danger, Chai Xu immediately released the bread, his wide, tearful eyes looking at He Qingqi as if she owed him millions.

He Qingqi gave him a disdainful look, tore open the bread package mercilessly, and took a big bite, chewing while glaring at Chai Xu.

How could he still be so protective of food, just like when they were kids? Even the company chairman wasn’t as protective of his food as Chai Xu.

She grumbled inwardly, but as she thought about it, her gaze softened. After all, even though he was protective of food, he still gave it to her, even if she had to snatch it in the end.

Relaxing her grip slightly, He Qingqi slowed down her eating pace and softened her tone to comfort him. “Alright, don’t worry, I won’t let you starve.”

When they received the notice earlier, they were told to act as if they were unaware, thinking they were just going on a vacation. The innkeeper would provide them with dinner that night, but the next morning, they would leave unexpectedly, with no breakfast left for them.

Chai Xu had never lacked food or clothing growing up, pampered like a little princess, but somehow he was particularly obsessed with food, like a little wolfdog guarding its food—he’d always been this way.

Chai Xu pouted pitifully, staring at the bread in He Qingqi’s mouth, his eyes unblinking.

He Qingqi’s nerves twitched under his gaze, and finally, she couldn’t take it anymore. With long fingers, she reached into the wrapper, pulled out the remaining half, and stuffed the uneaten end into Chai Xu’s mouth, feigning impatience. “Here, take it.”

“It’s just a piece of bread. I’ll buy you ten boxes later.”

Only then did Chai Xu’s face light up. He didn’t mind the crumbs and quickly finished the bread, not leaving a single trace behind.

His eyes flickered as he glanced at the driver up front, trying to suppress his curiosity.

In a casual tone, he asked, “Has anyone else come looking for you?”

They kept in touch daily, often chatting in the ‘Five Mischiefs’ group from Shiru High School, so Chai Xu was the first to hear about He Qingqi’s divorce, and he was genuinely happy for her.

He Qingqi was momentarily stunned, then realized who he was referring to. It had been a long time since she had thought about that person. It had been over a month since the divorce, and hearing the name now felt like it belonged to another lifetime.

There was a hint of melancholy, but mostly relief.

She shook her head. “No, I blocked her.”

Her voice was small, and the last part was so quiet that only she and Chai Xu could hear it. The driver up front seemed oblivious, continuing to drive as if he hadn’t heard a thing.

It was unclear if he really hadn’t heard or was just pretending, but it didn’t matter either way.

“That’s good,” Chai Xu said, relaxing. “I heard from my brother that she might have gone abroad.”

He Qingqi looked at him curiously. Why was he telling her this?

To her, after the divorce, they were strangers—worse than strangers, even. A stranger wouldn’t drug her, toss her into someone else’s bed, and then announce it to the world.

Thinking about it now, she still felt a surge of hatred and a deep sense of shame.

In the end, that person even said she loved her.

Did she have a thing for NTR or something?

He Qingqi’s lips curled into a cold smile, her heart growing colder, and a chill settled in her eyes.

“Oh.”

Her reply was indifferent and unfeeling.

“So what?”

It is a very stifling way to carry on a conversation.

Just small talk.

Chai Xu let out an awkward “uh,” scratching his nose in embarrassment. He hadn’t expected her to react this way. In the past, whenever they talked about Fang Xuanrao, He Qingqi had always been eager and full of love. Her sudden coldness now caught him off guard.

Although he had never liked Fang Xuanrao, he couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for her, if only for a moment.

The air grew quiet.

Under He Qingqi’s cool gaze, Chai Xu forced himself to continue. “I heard she went abroad to do volunteer work. She even traded all the things your grandfather gave her for supplies.”

“Oh,” He Qingqi nodded slowly, thought for a moment, and concluded, “She must have found her conscience.”

“Alright, alright.” Chai Xu quickly changed the subject, sensing the tension. “I was wrong to bring her up.”

He Qingqi’s eyebrows softened, but she said nothing more, turning her gaze to the window.

Time passed in silence as they drove through a bamboo grove, the dappled shadows of the setting sun flickering through the trees. Soon, a cozy-looking inn, not too luxurious but very inviting, came into view.

As they stepped out of the car, the cameraman got into position.

The two of them unloaded their luggage and carried it up the steps.

Chai Xu noticed He Qingqi’s slender, pale arms, with the muscles slightly flexing. Even though she looked fragile, as if she could break at the slightest touch, she easily kept pace with him, carrying her suitcase without any visible strain.

Your Qingqi is always your Qingqi.

He couldn’t help but touch his nose and tease, “Hey Qingqi, can’t you give me a chance to show off?”

His tone was familiar and close, indicating their easy camaraderie. The earlier tense topic was now forgotten, both of them knowing better than to dwell on it, especially since they were filming.

Even though the scene could be edited later, it was better to avoid unnecessary drama.

He Qingqi glanced at him and, in a tone he knew well, scoffed at him with mock arrogance. “Give you a chance? If I did, we wouldn’t be able to check in until tomorrow.”

Chai Xu pouted and muttered under his breath, “I’m not that weak.”

He Qingqi gave him a dismissive look.

The bickering of childhood friends who had known each other forever.

Pushing open the door, they stepped into a large courtyard with a swimming pool. On the left side of the courtyard, there were a few bicycles. The inn was the typical two-story kind, not new, with ordinary facilities.

Surrounded by lush trees, the air was fresh, occasionally filled with the sound of birdsong.

Chai Xu’s eyes lit up at the sight of the bicycles. He pointed excitedly at them with his left hand, while his right hand grabbed He Qingqi’s arm, unable to contain his excitement.

He Qingqi looked down at his hand, shot him a sharp glance, and Chai Xu immediately let go, shivering slightly—a reflex from childhood.

Even though he had grown taller and stronger than He Qingqi, he was still subconsciously afraid of her.

Chai Xu didn’t find it embarrassing in the least and remained just as enthusiastic. “Bicycles, Qingqi!”

“Oh,” He Qingqi responded coldly.

“Bicycles! Qingqi!” Chai Xu repeated, raising his voice.

His company had set up his image as a carefree, somewhat dim-witted youth, a role that fit him perfectly. Being a bit over-the-top wouldn’t make him lose fans.

So Chai Xu lived with abandon, not caring if he broke character.

After a few steps, he noticed Chai Xu was still standing there, so he turned back, slightly exasperated.

“Alright, forget the bicycles.” He Qingqi pulled the taller Chai Xu along, speaking to him like coaxing a child. “It’s too late now. I’ll

take you to play with them tomorrow morning, okay?”

“Okay, Dad,” Chai Xu replied easily, happily trailing behind He Qingqi.

He Qingqi nodded in satisfaction.

Qi Ran, his wife Jiang Shan, as well as Zhuo Zhiwei and Lin Dao, were all inside, gathered around the table for dinner. Hearing the noise, they all looked toward the door.

The air seemed to freeze.

He Qingqi and Chai Xu stood there, feeling a bit out of place and suddenly unsure of themselves.

Whenever they were together, nothing good ever happened. The last time they had so many eyes on them was back in high school.

They had been caught arriving late, right as the teacher was writing on the blackboard. The atmosphere back then was much like it is now.

He Qingqi’s eyes darted around, and she finally locked gazes with a pair of clear, moonlit eyes. Her expression brightened.

Qi Ran was the first to stand up, greeting them with a smile. “It’s Qingqi and Chai Xu, right? You must be tired.”

He then asked curiously, “How did you two end up coming together?”

“We ran into each other on the way,” He Qingqi replied, snapping back to reality. She smiled gracefully. “Hello, everyone, I’m He Qingqi.”

Her smile, always a wide, toothy grin, lacked a bit of ladylike restraint, but it was radiant, as if she were glowing.

Zhuo Zhiwei, seeing that familiar smile for the first time in ages, was momentarily stunned. She quickly averted her eyes, pursing her lips as joy danced at the corners of her eyebrows.

She had missed her.

After a moment, she raised her eyes and asked gently, her voice like a flowing stream, “Qingqi, have you eaten?”

Qi Ran and Jiang Shan both smacked their foreheads in realization. “Oh, I forgot you two are teammates.”

“Come on, come on, have you eaten yet? Don’t worry about your luggage; just join us for some food.”

Chai Xu didn’t hesitate, eagerly accepting the offer. “Alright!”

He Qingqi: “…”

Always think about food.

Chai Xu sat down next to Qi Ran without further ado, sneaking a glance at He Qingqi, looking pleased with himself.

Although He Qingqi’s face remained composed, her eyes betrayed her joy. She gave Chai Xu a satisfied look, lifted her chin slightly, and took a seat next to Zhuo Zhiwei.

Their eyes met, and He Qingqi’s brows softened as she lowered her head slightly.

Her face was full of obedient sweetness.

Zhuo Zhiwei, as usual, reached out and gently patted her head.

Lin Dao, who was holding a pair of chopsticks nearby, blinked in surprise.

Zhuo Zhiwei calmly looked over.

Under that cool gaze, Lin Dao quickly lowered his head, as if he wanted to bury himself in his bowl.
