Chapter 5 – Sun
Part 1
Free People’s Territory―Kvassir Border.
On a sunny day, long-distance running was the best way to go.
Bow and arrow in hand, running across the meadows with your horse, hunting and killing rabbits for dinner.
Sometimes, it’s good to aim for the big game.
If you went near the water, there were deer, wild boar, and bears.
Deer were fast on the run, and if you took your eyes off them, they could disappear at a moment’s notice.
Wild boars were brave enough to come at you, and if you were seriously hit by their lunging power, you would not be able to avoid injury.
Bears were intelligent and formidable, but unlike other prey, they enjoyed a high level of play.
The very thought of it was exciting.
For beastmen hunters, this was truly paradise.
“Nature… Prey… They are right in front of us! It’s no fun to just walk by and do nothing!”
The Supreme Chairman of the Republic of Steichen, Skadi, shouted into the sky.
It was understandable. As if to agree with her, her aides smiled.
She scratched her head and looked around. The five senses of the beastmen sensed the presence of prey.
It’s an instinct, a habit that couldn’t be suppressed―Skadi looked forward, biting her back teeth.
Right now, Skadi was on her way to a certain place with a small group of guards.
It all started with a letter.
“What a pity… we were so close to a war…”
Depressed, Skadi took out a letter from Lucia, the potential candidate for the unified king of the Six Kingdoms.
An aide, perhaps noticing with a keen eye, asked with a worried look on his face.
“It could be a trap, couldn’t it? Is it really possible that this handful of people was all that was needed? It’s true that Skadi-sama is very strong, but…”
“I suspected it at first, too, but this possibility seems unlikely.”
“How do you know that?”
“Just a hunch.”
With that, Skadi broke off the conversation and looked at the letter again.
The content of the letter was to be discussed in secret. It said, “Please come to the designated place.” The handwriting was not very strong or weak, and it was easy to guess how she felt when she wrote the letter.
“I can’t just ignore it… because I know how frustrating it is.”
Skadi smiled as she brushed the horns growing out of her head with her fingertips.
“But that doesn’t mean… that they would choose such an ideal place to hunt; they must resent us very much.”
Checking the surroundings again, the peaceful scenery still flowed. The pristine, untouched nature unfolded before Skadi’s eyes.
Thanks to the absence of the smell of blood, even if there were some “monsters,” they were of low rank, and the grasslands, which had become a paradise for weak creatures, continued to stimulate Skadi’s instincts.
Once they started hunting, however, they would not stop until the heat cooled. A day or two would not be enough. With so much prey, they could hunt forever.
And so, patiently, sometimes with tears in their eyes, Skadi and her party made their way to their destination.
Finally, a single tent came into view.
No banner was raised. But judging by the clothing of the soldiers guarding the area, they were certainly not bandits. If they were to guess who it was, Lucia would be the only one to pitch a tent in such a place.
Skadi increased the speed of her horse as if to break her obsession with hunting.
As soon as they were within striking distance, Skadi dismounted and spoke to the man standing in front of the tent.
“It’s the Six Kingdoms, isn’t it? Queen Lucia is there, isn’t she? Let’s talk about it quickly.”
“We have been expecting you. Please come in. Lucia-sama is here.”
A man with the air of an elegant nobleman bowed his head and opened the door for her.
“You will wait outside.”
Skadi instructed her men and stepped inside with a grim look on her face, for she had not been able to hunt.
It was dim inside. The smell of incense filled the air, and Skadi, who has a good nose, made an unpleasant face.
As she walked deeper into the room, she saw Lucia sitting on a leather couch. She also noticed Skadi’s presence and smiled.
“It’s been a long time… so sit where you like.”
“So, I’ll ask you directly. What do you want? If it’s boring, I’ll beat it out of you.”
Sitting down in a suitable chair, Skadi opened a bottle of wine that was nearby and began to drink.
“You’re a bold one, aren’t you? Aren’t you worried about poison?”
“Most poisons can be neutralized in my body. Let’s talk about something else, shall we?”
“Yes, I suppose so. I’ll get right to the point.”
Lucia’s eyes narrowed like a snake, and she swung the folded iron fan vertically down.
There was a loud bang when it hit the desk.
“I am very sorry, but I have decided to retire. Therefore, there is no need for the Republic of Steichen to proceed any further.”
“Hmm, you’re very open-minded; I thought you were going to trick us.”
“That’s my line. I thought for sure Steichen was going after Grantz.”
I see… Skadi snorted when she found out why Lucia had called her.
She wanted to know why Skadi gave Grantz the benefit of the doubt.
Depending on the answer, she might want to push the Republic of Steichen towards the Great Grantz Empire. Her feelings were understandable. However, if she was told the reason, Sakdi would have to reveal the fact that she had been defeated by the “Black Dragon King.”
Therefore, Skadi decided to use Lucia to find out the truth by mixing lies with the truth.
“Look at this. Do you know what this is?”
Skadi drank a glass of wine and put one of the “Five Dragon and Phoenix Swords” on the table, the “Mad Claws.”
Lucia was suspicious but answered with a tilt of her head.
“From the looks of it, it must be one of the ‘World’s Five Greatest Treasured Swords.’ What’s it all about?”
“The Five Destructive Holy Principle Swords you hold are one thing, but do you understand who created the ‘World’s Five Greatest Treasured Swords’?”
“The Five Heavenly Kings. What are you talking about? It is common knowledge in this world.”
“Then have you seen the ‘Fairy King’ in the Holy City, the creator of the Five Destructive Holy Principle Swords?”
“…..”
When she was told, she realized―with a startled look on her face, Lucia looked at the iron fan she was holding.
Her eyes were fixed on it, and her expression was as if she was asking for something.
But after a moment, a shadow appeared over Lucia’s beauty.
“She is gone, no, she is not dead, but this has weakened the power of the Mandala…”
Lucia looked down at her partner with a shocked expression on her face. Even Skadi could see that the power of the Mandala had been weakened. That meant something had happened to the Fairy King.
The corners of Skadi’s mouth turned up as she took a sip of her wine.
Thanks to Lucia, the question could be answered.
“It’s good to see you finally figured it out.”
As long as the contract lasted, the World’s Five Greatest Treasured Swords w always be with you, never leaving you, like a family member.
Therefore, Lucia could not notice anything wrong with her partner.
It was natural, it was only natural, it had been common knowledge for a thousand years, and people were bound by it and overlooked the truth.
“So, I heard from a certain man that the Iron and Steel King created the Five Daybreak Swords and that it doesn’t exist. Do you know what that means?”
Lucia was still reeling from the shock, but Skadi was having none of it.
If anything, now was the time to attack. She needed to get a lot out of her while she was still confused.
“I have a pretty good idea why, but I’ve never met the owner on the central continent.”
“Heh, since I gave you some information, why don’t you tell me?”
She almost leaned forward from her desk, but Skadi hastily stopped herself. Still, she could not hide her smile. It seems that the honesty of the beastmen has come out. Lucia may or may not have noticed, but she took one look at Skadi and then sighed.
“I have heard that the Iron and Steel King is… suppressing the eruption of Mount Vias on the northern continent. If he had put that much effort into it, then the Five Daybreak Swords would be nothing more than a mere sword, if not extinct.”
“Is that so… I see…”
Skadi nodded with satisfaction, having gathered more information than she had expected. She had not expected Lucia to talk so much. She was so upset―probably because she was afraid of losing the Mandala.
“So, back to the subject, I was thinking…”
“What?”
“It’s only natural.”
Skadi slammed the bottle of wine down on the table and made a regretful face.
“The danger of using the World’s Five Greatest Treasured Swords, which could break at any moment.”
The crisis of the Great Grantz Empire―there was no guarantee that they would win, even if they attacked while drooling for the sweet honey. Most importantly, there was a possibility that the five most precious swords in the world would be broken during the battle. And if Grantz were to fall, they would lose the means to counter the threat of the Faceless King. Skadi and Lucia, who have relied on the World’s Five Greatest Swords, would be reduced to the level of skilled warriors, not to mention common soldiers.
“Do you have the confidence to defeat the Faceless King in a world without the World’s Five Greatest Treasured Swords?”
“Is that… the reason why you’re so much in favor of Grantz? But even if Grantz wins, they’ll still have the Five Emperors of Spirit Swords. I think it’s the same thing.”
Among the World’s Five Greatest Treasured Swords, only the Five Emperors of Spirit Swords were special.
It was the only one that was made by a human hand. It was not made by the Spirit King.
“That’s right… If the Grantz win, Liz’s era will be safe, at least for a short time.”
The process of creating the Five Emperors of Spirit Swords. However, the fact that the spirit’s will was in it suggested that the Spirit King must have intervened. However, if that was the case, then it had a longer lifespan than the other World’s Five Greatest Treasured Swords, and it may not break.
“But I thought it would be better than the Faceless King since I could negotiate with her.”
“Is that okay? Will you concede the beastmen’s instincts?”
“I can’t let my personal feelings destroy the land. I’ll leave it to the next generation to decide what to do with the Grantz, and I’ll try to make our country stronger.”
“Well then… I guess I have no choice but to give up.”
If she could not get Steichen’s cooperation, the Six Kingdoms alone would not be able to do anything.
As one might expect from Lucia’s sentiments, Skadi also lost the will to laugh.
Picking up a silver goblet, she poured the wine and offered it to Lucia.
“Let’s have a drink.”
“I’ll keep you company for a while. In celebration of the hardships that lie ahead.”
“Haha, that’s nice. I have to admit, I’m in the mood.”
Skadi also had regrets.
But she was more than aware of her own abilities.
Skadi’s fighting style was only possible with Mad Claws.
That’s why she wanted to go on a rampage against Lucia in the end.
Now that she was no longer able to do so, she had no choice but to drink.
“Besides, I’ll pray that the Black Dragon King’s plan will work.”
After taking a sip of her wine, she sniffed and closed her eyes.
“May the world’s greatest fool be blessed.”
