Chapter 80, Prey and Predator Battle
Chapter 80, Prey and Predator Battle
Translator: Tamon
The old Xu Hei would’ve fled at the drop of the hat. Now, however, withstanding the other’s first strike proved he could turn it around.
He had no way of dealing with flying creatures. While Xu Hei could fly, the height wouldn’t be enough, not to mention turning himself into an easy target.
This was the concept of predator, total superiority against its prey.
“Xiao Qiu, can you handle the oversized bird?” Xiao Qiu asked.
“Senior, that’s a Foundation Establishment demon. How am I supposed to do that?” Xiao Qiu shook his head.
“Wasn’t Hua Yuntian one too? How come you made a mess of him still?” Xu Hei tacked back.
Xiao Qiu’s words were stuck in his throat.
He wouldn’t admit that the strength came due to Yin Ling. He gave an awkward smile instead, switching topics. “Senior, working together might give us a chance.”
Xu Hei nodded. “I guess. What do you say about hanging on a tree a little longer, as bait?”
…
The golden eagle circled the skies, its eyes fixed below. He was confident the last strike would end his prey, yet he failed. It hardly ever happened in all his years using it.
“Was the old ape right? Does the snake eat immortal pills for breakfast, turning harder than steel?” He was on high alert.
He was a Foundation Establishment demon. It was a breeze for him to land and even go underground and get his prey, especially one a stage lower. This time wasn’t one of those, it would seem.
Survivors in the animal world meant superiority in one aspect or another. A demon beast meant a cut above that, to say nothing of reaching Foundation Establishment. He knew what was the best course of action.
“So you’re just going to hide?”
The golden eagle’s eyes shone with malice, fading among the clouds.
Minutes later, Xiao Qiu popped his head out of the ground to scout the skies. “Senior, I can’t see the demon.”
Xu Hei’s scouting snake was on a peak and confirmed his information, but he didn’t relax.
Snakes prey on frogs, staying still for as long as three days for it to pass by. This was hardly long.
At worst it would just mean a few days wasted. Xu Hei was confident in his superior patience. His reaction was to dig even deeper into the earth.
Xu Bai was inside her cave, hidden with Hei Huang’s array. He could also duck away, but that would expose the array.
Xu Hei made a small pocket in the ground where he hid to eat pills and consolidate his cultivation.
To be on the safe side, he sent out puppets on the sly to hide and warn him of dangers.
Two hours later, Xiao Qiu looked at the quiet world around and hopped out.
“Senior, the demon’s gone.”
Xiao Qiu shouted, then sighed at Xu Hei’s lack of response. So he just sat down on the spot to meditate.
Time trickled by and the clouds grew thicker and thicker overhead, becoming blacker and blacker. Faint sounds of thunder and flickering lighting could be picked up from it.
Xiao Qiu gazed up with worry and moved away.
Xu Hei was startled and changed locations, and yet the clouds always followed him around.
“What demon art is this?” Xu Hei tensed and activated Earth Armor out of instinct, and held many talismans at the ready.
A lightning struck the ground rumbling the earth and the heavens with its mighty booms. The thick stream of lightning ran straight through the earth.
Rumble~
The whole valley shook under its might, the lightning spearing for Xu Hei.
Snap~
The ground broke and cracked as deep as a hundred meters, snaking down to slam into Xu Hei.
“What?”
Xu Hei winced, but he was prepared, activating three Earth Shields overhead, and doubling his Earth Armor.
He didn’t forget to use a few extra Golden Shield Talismans as he fled backward.
Boom!
The lightning struck, punching through the Earth Shields, making a hole in the Earth Armor while rupturing the Golden Shield Talismans.
Xu Hei had to use Ye Haichuan’s flying sword to finally block the lightning.
Xu Hei was cooked from the strike, releasing black smoke, while the earth above had a thirty-meter gapping hole in it giving clear view of the skies.
This time Xu Hei was hurt.
Whoosh!
A golden flash plunged from the clouds at tremendous speeds, right for the gap.
Demon eagles had among the fastest speeds in the animal kingdom. This Golden Plume Thunder Eagle took it a step further.
He crossed a thousand meters in the air like it was nothing.
Xu Hei was cool as a cucumber, his mind activated the second he noticed the eagle above. He used Attraction to have many black dots sink into the earth.
His tail tapped the storage bag and granite puppets lined up in front.
Boom~
The golden talons came first, smashing a dozen stonemen.
On the verge of reaching Xu Hei, tiny black dots shot from the earth around, raining down on him.
Upon detecting the eagle, Xu Hei hid many scales with Attraction. As the predator neared, he’d outflank him and finish him off.
He laid his trap and waited for the enemy to come to him.
“What the hell are these?” The golden eagle squinted, a bad feeling creeping in.
The freedom of the skies and his speed would make dodging a breeze, but the hole made from the lightning limited his natural advantage.
Whoosh~
The golden eagle shifted left and right with grace, dodging any attack it could, while taking the ones he couldn’t with his toughest feathers.
To his surprise, the feathers offered no resistance as the scales cut through them, his flesh, and even bone.
“Fall!”
Xu Hei whipped his tail and sent out a flying sword augmented with Attraction for added impact.
The golden eagle was focused entirely on dodging, yet a slight delay resulted in one of his wings breaking from the sword strike.
Splat!
Blood gushed everywhere as the ground was covered in feathers.
Once again, Xu Hei’s scales played a crucial role in his many encounters.
A cultivator used his hearing to at least turn the strikes into glancing blows, but the eagle was unaware of the scales’ superiority and suffered for it.
Xu Hei ate a pill and dashed backward, keeping a healthy distance.
“Curses, the snake’s too devious!” The golden eagle gnashed his teeth.
As a demon eagle, he’d hunted no less than ten late Awareness demon snakes with smashing success. This was his first time meeting one so tough.
The snake had power, but also shrewdness, luring him deep below ground and using human tactics.
How did he do that?
All demons fought for their lives in every battle and at most resort to some demon art. Xu Hei, here, used talismans, magical arts, puppets, and a flying sword on top. He was more spineless than the most wretched humans out there. A damn cheat!
“You swine!”
The eagle raged in frustration, about to flee having lost his interest in this losing battle.
“You think you can just walk away?”
Xu Hei’s eyes flashed. The gap above was filled with rocks, bearing down on the eagle’s head.
Xu Hei had his puppet formation on the surface at the ready since the start.
The granite rocks had little efficiency, mostly useful against mortals and low cultivators.
The eagle only felt itches at most, but so many of them.
While ending him was out of the question, the stone rain was enough to bury him under layers and layers of granite.
“Bastard!”
The golden eagle flew into a rage, flapping its ruined wings to break the rocks.
Xu Hei couldn’t defeat his predator as long as the enemy stayed in the skies and launched attacks.
Once the predator made the unwise decision to sink at his prey’s level, i.e. underground, that was a death sentence.
The real issue was his overconfidence. The rocks kept on coming even as the eagle smashed them.
“Demon snake, don’t push me! You think I’m afraid of you?” The golden eagle snapped.
Xu Hei used Earth Spike to send sharp needles of earth at the eagle while keeping his guard up to back up on the fly.
Xu Hei didn’t believe for a second his advantage meant victory. [The fowl has to have something up its sleeve.]
When corpses could rise, anything was possible, especially since the enemy wasn’t dead.
