Chapter 601: Terror Face Murders
Chapter 601: Terror Face Murders
“YOU WENT BACK?!”
The shout echoed through the entire house.
Charlotte flinched, pressing herself against the wall of her bedroom as Mika stood before her, his face contorted with fury.
“I was careful!” She protested. “I only went into safe dreams! Nothing bad happened!”
“THAT’S NOT THE POINT!” Mika’s hands were shaking. “You promised me, Charlotte! You promised you wouldn’t do this anymore!”
“I know, but—”
“But nothing! Do you have any idea how scared I was when I found you trapped in that dream?!”
“Do you know what it felt like to sit there, holding your hand, not knowing if you were ever going to wake up?!”
“I’m sorry—”
“Sorry isn’t good enough! You could have died! Your mind could have been trapped in there forever! And you just—you just went back like it was nothing?!”
Charlotte’s own temper began to flare.
“It’s my blessing, Mika! I can’t just ignore it! This is who I am!”
“Then maybe who you are is going to get you killed!”
“That’s not fair!”
“None of this is fair! I’ve been trying to protect you since we were children, and you keep throwing yourself into danger like it doesn’t matter!”
“I can take care of myself!”
“Obviously you can’t! If you could, I wouldn’t have had to spend a YEAR in my mind palace figuring out how to save you!”
Charlotte fell silent. She hadn’t known that. She hadn’t known what it had cost him to come after her.
“Look.” She said, her voice softer now. “I’ve figured out how to tell the dreams apart. The one I went into last time—it had this weird, cloudy look to it.”
“I know now that those are the dangerous ones. The fractured minds. As long as I avoid those, I’ll be fine.”
“That’s not—”
“And the other dreams have different colors depending on the emotions! Happy dreams are warm colors. Sad dreams are cool colors. I can tell what I’m getting into before I even enter!”
“Charlotte—”
“I’m not going to get hurt, Mika. I promise. I’ve learned my lesson. I know what to avoid now.”
Mika stared at her. She could see the frustration in his eyes, the exhaustion, the desperate love of someone who was trying so hard to protect a person who refused to be protected.
“Please.” She said, and for once there was no manipulation in her voice, no hidden agenda.
“This is who I am. I can’t change that. But I can be smarter about it. I can be more careful. Isn’t that enough?”
Mika didn’t answer. He just turned and walked away to the Battle Angels next.
—
“You have to stop her!” Mika said, standing before them in the main hall.
“Charlotte is dream-walking again. She promised me she would stop, and she broke her promise, and now she’s going to get herself killed.”
The Battle Angels exchanged glances. Charlotte’s blessing pulsed gently in the air around them, invisible and unfelt.
“Mika.” Yelena began. “Charlotte’s blessing is a part of her. You can’t ask her to simply ignore it.”
“I’m not asking her to ignore it! I’m asking her to be careful! I’m asking you to set some boundaries, some rules, something to keep her safe!”
“She’s been dream-walking for years.” Nadia pointed out. “The incident with the fractured mind was an anomaly. Now that she knows what to avoid, there’s no reason she can’t continue.”
“No reason?!” Mika’s voice cracked with disbelief. “She was trapped! She couldn’t wake up! If I hadn’t been there—”
“But you were there.” Fauna said gently. “You saved her. And now she knows to be more careful.”
“That’s not—she shouldn’t need to be saved in the first place!”
“All blessings come with risks.” The Maiden of War said. “When I was learning to fight, I broke bones. When Yelena was mastering her swords, she nearly cut off her own arm.”
“Growth requires danger, Mika. It’s the nature of power.”
“This isn’t the same! Charlotte’s blessing is different—it affects her mind, her consciousness, the very essence of who she is.”
“If something goes wrong, she won’t just break a bone. She’ll lose herself entirely!”
“But nothing has gone wrong.” The Maiden of Fate said quietly. “Not since the first incident. Charlotte has been careful. She’s been safe.”
“She’s been lucky.”
“Perhaps. But luck is also part of growth.”
Mika looked at these women he trusted and saw, with a despair that cut deeper than any physical wound, that they were not going to help him.
They couldn’t. Charlotte’s blessing had its hooks in them too deep.
“Fine.” He said, his voice hollow. “Fine. If you won’t listen to me, then there’s nothing more I can say.”
“Mika—”
“No. I’m done. Let her do whatever she wants. Let her walk into whatever nightmare catches her fancy.”
His voice turned icey.
“But the next time she gets trapped, the next time she’s screaming and crying and begging for someone to save her—don’t expect me to come running!”
“Mika, sweetheart—”
“Baby—”
“Mika, wait! Listen to us—”
“Mikaa!”
But he just ignored them and walked away.
The door to his room slammed shut with a finality that made everyone flinch.
Charlotte stood in the hallway, having heard the entire exchange.
She wanted to go after him. She wanted to knock on his door and tell him she was sorry and promise that she would stop.
But she didn’t.
Because she couldn’t stop. Her blessing was too much a part of her.
And somewhere deep inside, she knew that she would keep dream-walking no matter what promises she made.
She just hoped Mika would forgive her when he calmed down.
—
Mika lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling, feeling more alone than he had in years.
Why won’t anyone listen to me?
He wasn’t trying to be controlling. He wasn’t trying to take away Charlotte’s freedom.
He just wanted her to be safe. Was that so wrong?
Was it so unreasonable to want the people he loved to avoid unnecessary danger?
Apparently, it was.
He wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. He wasn’t going to cry. He was too old for that. Too mature. Too…
Who was he kidding? He was still a child.
His emotions were all over the place, and he couldn’t control them, and it was all so frustrating that he wanted to scream.
Instead, he reached for his phone. Maybe a distraction would help.
Something to take his mind off the argument, off Charlotte, off the feeling that he was the only sane person in a family that had lost its collective mind.
He opened the news and began to scroll.
Of course, children didn’t typically watch the news.
It was boring. It was depressing. It was full of things that didn’t concern them.
But Mika was different. Not only did he try to act like an adult, but he genuinely enjoyed learning about the world.

Most of the headlines were just the world’s equivalent of onion articles.
But there was one that caught his eye and made him pause.
[TERROR FACE MURDERS: SPECIAL INVESTIGATION TEAM ASSEMBLED]
Terror Face Murders. The name alone was enough to send a chill down his spine.
Mika hesitated for a moment, his thumb hovering over the screen. Then curiosity won out, and he tapped the article.
The female broadcaster appeared on screen, her expression calm but her eyes betraying a hint of unease.
“Good evening. As of now, the Terror Face Murders have now claimed thirty-six victims across multiple cities.”
“Despite the best efforts of law enforcement, the killer remain at large, and the public is growing increasingly fearful.”
“All victims share one disturbing commonality.”
The broadcaster continued with hint of graveness in her voice
“Each was found with a look of absolute horror frozen on their face. Though their bodies showed no signs of physical trauma, their expressions were contorted in agony and fear—as if, in their final moments, they had witnessed something so terrifying that the sheer shock of it stopped their hearts.”
“We must warn our viewers—the following images may be disturbing.”
The screen changed to show photographs of the victims. Mika felt a chill run down his spine.
Every single face was contorted in primal terror.
Eyes wide and staring. Mouths frozen in silent screams. Skin pale as death itself.
These people hadn’t just died—they had died seeing something. Something so horrible that their final moments had been nothing but pure, unadulterated fear.
“Witnesses report that victims appeared normal until the moment of death. Some were at home with their families. Others were in public places—offices, restaurants, even riding the subway.”
“Without warning, they began screaming, their faces contorting with horror. Before anyone could react, before medical help could arrive, they were gone.”
Mika stared at the screen. Thirty-six victims. Thirty-six people who had simply…died. No wounds. No poison. No explanation.
“In response to the growing crisis.” The broadcaster continued.
“A special task force has been assembled. Leading the investigation is Marcus Williams, also known as the Lightning Deity.”
Mika sat up straighter.
He knew that name.
Marcus Williams was famous across the realms—not just for his S-rank lightning blessing, which made him one of the most formidable combatants alive, but for his investigative abilities.
He had solved cases that had stumped the most experienced detectives.
He had uncovered conspiracies that went to the highest levels of government.
He had proven, time and time again, that true excellence came not from power alone, but from intelligence, dedication, and an unshakeable commitment to justice.
Mika had always admired him. In a world that often dismissed those without blessings as inherently inferior, Marcus stood as proof that skill and determination mattered more than raw power.
He was what Mika aspired to be—someone whose worth was defined by his actions, not his abilities.
The broadcast cut to a press conference.
Marcus stood at a podium, tall and commanding, his silver hair slicked back, his golden eyes gleaming behind a pair of wire-rimmed glasses.
Behind him stood his team, a collection of Blessed with various specialties, all looking confident and capable.
“I want to assure the public that we are taking this investigation extremely seriously.”
Marcus said, his voice smooth and reassuring.
“These murders have gone on for far too long. Thirty-six innocent people have lost their lives, and their families deserve answers. My team has already begun analyzing the evidence, and I can promise you this—we will find whoever is responsible.”
“We will bring them to justice. And we will make sure that no one else has to die in terror.”
He looked directly into the camera, his golden eyes seeming to pierce through the screen.
“To the people of our realms: you can rest easy. As long as I’m on the case, you’re safe. I give you my word.”
The crowd of reporters burst into questions, but Marcus just waved and stepped back from the podium.
The broadcast cut back to the anchor, who began summarizing the rest of the press conference.
Mika let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.
‘Marcus Williams is on the case.’ He thought. ‘Everything’s going to be fine.’
He didn’t know why the story had unsettled him so much. Maybe it was the faces of the victims—those horrible, terrified expressions that seemed to stare right through the screen.
Maybe it was the mystery of it all, the complete absence of explanation.
Or maybe it was just the lingering frustration from his argument with Charlotte, coloring everything with a darker shade than it deserved.
Whatever the reason, he was glad Marcus was handling it. If anyone could solve this case, it was him.
There was no reason for Mika to worry about it.
No reason at all.
